Looking for Gotchas!

I'm looking at a Jeep Rubicon Unlimited, from a dealer. This would be my 3rd Jeep Rubicon, if I get it. But it has some flags I need to check on.

1) First, it's from British Columbia. I'm from WA. Anything about a BC Jeep I should be concerned about?

2) There is no RUBICON, on the hood. There is no Rubicon on the fenders. There is no "Trail Rated" on the fenders. Seems odd they would be removed. Should this bother me? Dealer says they can replace them. VIN says it's a Rubicon but I can't imagine why anyone would remove them.

3) Are those medallions on the fender, stick on, or are they mounted via holes. If holes, they have been patched. Another flag?

4) It has a navigation system. Would maps be different coming from BC? Or are the maps all of N. America and the same, whether from BC or USA

Thanks

As long as the electronic sway bars and lockers work, it's a Rubicon. It's highly unlikely that it's anything more than debadged.

The trail rated emblems are 3m adhesive, should only be a few bucks online if you want them.

If it's at the dealer, insure its radio has the latest update and maps.

One other thing. Any chance that the transmission might be different? Different gearing etc. I did read a few years earlier there was a 2WD version. Don't want to get something and find out there is a technical issue I overlooked. Basically (duh), I'm a user not a tech guy.

Thanks

  1. If its a Canadian Jeep, it will have no warranty here in the USA. There is also the English vs. Metric differences (which may or may not bother you).
  2. There are no Rubicon stickers on the fenders; only on the hood. If the VIN says its a Rubicon, then I would say it is.
  3. All stick-ons.
  4. Unsure of the maps. Which NAV system does it have? 430N or 730N?

North America market vehicles have navigation maps that work in both Canada and US.

Like Walt says, the two issues will be (1) no warranty and, (2) metric speedo and odo.

Some dealers replace the gauges to show miles; maybe the dealer is willing to throw in an extended warranty...?

I went back out and checked and the speedometer and gauges are already replaced with U.S.

I would have replaced the fenders immediately anyway but it kind of bothers me they have been cut. I know a lot do this but I guess I'm too picky about something I'd replace anyway.

Seems original below. Driveshaft boot torn.\

I wouldn't let the cut fenders deter you. I replaced the textured black fenders on my 2013 Commando with a set of takeoff fenders for very little money.

Takeoff black fenders are a dime a dozen on Craigslist and eBay.

Use the steering wheel controls to make sure the digital speedo matches the analog gauge. Someone had one here where the dealer did something fishy with the "conversion" and they didn't match. Personally I'd move on. This vehicle had been modified, poorly at that. And while I can't specifically speak for Wranglers, I'd avoid any non-US spec vehicle. There can be market-specific parts that may prove difficult to get. It probably won't be major things but recently there was a story about a F150 owner in Canada who had the HVAC control box fail and Ford couldn't supply the part, for a 2009 model vehicle. He had to sue Ford and get the press to help his case for Ford to make him a one-off part.
