I'm gonna get FLAMED for this one, but if you REALLY REALLY know for sure that you will never take your Jeep off road, then you should consider a 2WD jeep. ( I said it, I ain't skeered) Here's the reasoning:

sitting around is very bad for gears... if you never use your 4WD, it will never circulate the gear oil, and that's bad.

the MSRP will drop about $1500, and since they are SO HARD to get rid of, the dealer might be more willing to drop even farther.

Most Jeeps are pretty capable in just 2WD anyway.

A 2WD has less to break and less to mod.

The CONs:

Other jeepers will NOT like you much (you are in fact committing blasphemy... I know, because my DJ is a 2WD... I get some cool points back for it being a cool rare jeep, but its still a "reject")

Same as it is REALLY hard for dealers to sell em, so will it be for you if you ever try to sell it. You will basically be stuck trying to find a dealer who doesn't get jeeps and will give you a good trade value on it.

You can't really go back and undo it very easily. it's a very serious undertaking to try and add 4WD later should you change your mind.

Good call. The only time I could really see myself using 4wd is the 2 or 3 snow storms we have every winter. We normally don't get too much though, so a 2wd wrangler should do fine. Will other jeep owners still wave to me

Yes, they will. But be warned, you will be missing out on the best part of owning a Jeep... The ability to go anywhere

Yep

No way to tell the difference on the road unless you lift it enough for that straight front tube to show

Mine shows on my DJ and I still get a ton o waves though... it isn't something you actively look for

The ability to go anywhere is really a cool thing, I just don't see myself really going anywhere except the road. Maybe once or twice a year I'd take it on the beach, and once or twice a year I'd try some off roading. What is the difference in cost, and mpg between the 2 and 4wd.

More Wranglers on any road means more fun. Life is good, get a Wrangler, any Wrangler, it doesn't matter, as long as you have the top and doors off, you're going to love it!

2WD is only available in the 4 door Unlimited model

Your selections will likely be limited as to colors/options etc with 2WD since they don't sell well. Usually only rental car agencies buy them.

2WD will be lighter, so maybe a bit better MPG (1-2 mpg tops)

2WD may be cheaper to insure than 4WD

Is there a specific reason why you need a 4 door vs the 2 door model ?
Do you need the room for cargo or passengers often enough to justify the couple of thousand $ added cost ?

If you like the looks then get a 4 door, and don't get the 4 wheel driveoption, You save a lot of money, get better gas milage, and it's a Jeep that really can't do Jeep things, but hey you're just interested in the body style... Good luck.

If I were stuck on getting 2WD, I'd special order it at the dealer so I was able to get exactly what color/options I wanted. Again, with them( 2WD) being so limited at the dealerships you probably won't find what you want, and it sounds like you are pretty particular on vehicle looks/options.

Thanks for all the help guys. The 4 door vs 2 door thing...

I was never a huge fan of the 2 door wranglers, dont know why but just never cared for them. When I saw the 4 doors for the first time I just loved it. It's really a looks thing for me. Also, for the past 5 years I've been driving a little 2 door cougar. I'm just sick of the small 2 door car. I'd like something that people in the back seat don't complain about, and some extra room would be nice.

price wise you're talkin $1500ish less for a 2WD. If they actually have one at a dealer, you also have the advantage of wanting a jeep nobody else wants, and will be hard for the dealer to sell. The flip side is that you won't see a lot of choices on color and trim... I insisted on RHD, so I sorta tossed all my options right out the window (guy asked me what color and I said "RHD", he was shocked)

mileage would be the same I think. You gotta figure any jeep on pavement is in 2WD mode anyway... the only real difference is that you're removing the ability to kick in the 4WD to get out of trouble off road...

I get the 4 door thing. I wanted one as soon as they came out, but I wanted it cause I got kids that LOVE going off road

If you buy a 2wd JEEP, it's like

1)--taking a single shot .22 into bear country

2)--sky diving with a "used" parachute

3)--Scuba diving without ballast weights

4)--Having only $90 bucks for Poker $100 buyin

See You're ALMOST there, but not quite

You won't be able to sell it later for ANYTHING !!

You'll meet some new friends with jeeps/4x4's and you will just feel like a "Redheaded stepchild"

I don't think it's a good idea, especially if you pay attention to these forums !!

Good luck

LOL, I understand the sentiment, and would have agreed with you at one time, but I've owned one for 8 years now and the stigma wore off... it's not as bad as it sounds, I assure you

What if cash was an issue and you intend on using the 4x4 little to none?

It's your decision and your vehicle. Personally I wouldn't but any SUV without 4WD. If money is the issue buy a used one.

I'm interested in a Jeep because I love the way they look. I'm also sick of my small car. And I will be getting it used.

I had an older 2WD Chevy S10 Tahoe and when I sold it it was worth 1/3 of what a 4WD model was worth.

Call me old school, but isn't a SUV = 4WD. If it doesn't I call it a lifted stationwagon....My friends always love hearing me say that one about their Kia and Hyundai

I'm down in FL. I started car shopping in February. I was looking for either a convertible or a pick-up. I test drove a Wrangler and was sold instantly. It was the best of both worlds in my opinion.

I have every intention of taking it out on to the beaches at some point but as of now I've only had it on pavement. That being said, I love it and wouldn't have settled on anything else after test driving it. Top down, doors off and go, it's awesome.

Congrats! Yes I hear ya, I had the same itch. I previously had a 300ZX and well lets just say the rear wheel drive in the winter left me driving up hills backwards to home instead of work. I sold it and wondered about days gone without a roof and missing the sun in my face and the wind at my back. Then suddenly earlier this year I realized they make vehicles that have 4 wheel drive and no roof.....I pulled the trigger on a YJ and haven't looked back since!
