Looking to Lease/Buy 2017 JKUR.... Opionions/Suggestions Please.

So my current lexus lease ends in December, and I decided to go to my local Jeep Dealer in Glendale, CA to get an idea of what the price of the Jeep I want to order is. I mention to him that a lot of people on the forums are going to Koons in VA and getting around 5-7% below invoice and I take it he went to the finance department to ask them, and he said that if we order or sell you car off the lot, we can do 10% off MSRP and won't be able to do 5-7% below MSRP. He brought a Sticker of a car that is on the way from factory, or on the way to the dealer which had most of the options I wanted. I told him, Okay take this one for example, I wanted 0 out of pocket, 10k/year, 24-36 month term prices.

He accidentally put 12k/year. But here are the prices.



Why are the payments so high? I'm confused.

Subscribing. I was on Jeep.com, built a jeep with my options and the lease minus ttl and doc fees lease price was in the low 300. Dealer has me estimated around 460 a month. Can anyone elaborate on how the numbers play out higher? I know there's a sweet spot factoring term vs miles and out of pocket.

Hey all,

I bought my first Jeep a year ago. I originally made the purchase because I got a great deal, but I instantly fell in love. My current Jeep is a 2013 Sahara Unlimited. I am thinking about going all in and making the upgrade to the 2017 Rubi Hard Rock. Especially since it's the last year of the JK.

I want to make the switch because of the great trade in value I currently have with the Sahara. It's got all the bells and whistles, only 32k miles, execellent condition. This would minimize my out of pocket costs for the Rubi. The Jeep I want would be $50k all in - MSRP according to Jeep.com. Similar to the Sahara, all the premium packages.

Here are my questions -

1) KBB says 28-32k trade in value, how much flex room is there with that at the dealership?

2) How much do you think I could bargain the dealer price down from $50k. Everything I have read says MSRP is definitely negotiable. But I don't know how much.

3) Any other deals I should be aware of? I would love to keep my out-of-pocket to 10-15k by bumping up trade in, bringing down MSRP, finding good deals.

4) Do you think getting into the last year of the JK is a good deal considering the (apparently) substantial changes coming?

You are getting killed by interest. At 0 interest your payment would be $373 with the deal you have outlined. That is based on 36 months and no money down.

NEVER lease a wrangler. The residual money factor on the wrangler leases is crap. Your vehicle is almost always worth significantly more than they quote you at the end of the lease so you are over paying. Always better to buy a wrangler. With the low miles you are looking at you will have equity almost immediately.

I just leased a 2016 JKU Sport S that is pretty loaded...MSRP was 37k. I put down 1k and I am paying $399 a month, they started out at $430 and I got them down to $399.

I contacted about 15 other dealerships and none were under $430/month for JKU's with MSRPs between 34-35k besides the one I ended up going with.

You're getting raped on the financing charges. Without lube.

When I calculated it at 12K miles a year with 70% residual and 0.00235 MF, no money down, and 9.25% sales tax, I got $409.50+/-. To get that price you'd have to pay title/registration out of pocket, or add it to the mix and raise the prices. There are a few factors, though, such as your credit.

There are plenty of lease calculators online--I recommend arming yourself with knowledge, asking the right questions, and figuring out how they are pulling one over on you. If you really want it, and you don't want to fight for it, and you can pay more than $200 more a month, then go for it. But me, I'm gonna get the best deal I can.

I did go with Koons in VA, granted it was just a train ride up the state for me to get there. But they did offer the best deal at the time, and they were great to work with. I had pre-approval from USAA before I went in, and they were able to beat their APR. I recommend people to them all the time, and I would have no qualms buying from them again.

Your lease price is (just as your car insurance), linked to your credit rating.
When leasing a vehicle, there is NO DISCOUNT off the sticker price. The dealer will set up the lease, but the vehicle belongs to the leasing company. At the end of the lease, the selling price is the residual after all your payments. In many cases, the residual is way above the KBB. Most leased vehicles at the end of their lease, are auctioned off because nobody wants to pay the residual value. Therefore, the leasing company makes all their money up front.
IMHO, since you don't have the down payment, you should consider a basic JK/JKU and forget about any mods until the vehicle is paid off. If you don't have the down payment, then you can't afford any mods.
The basic JK/JKU is good for lots of off-roading and for use as a DD. The more you mod a Jeep, the more "specialized" it becomes and again, IMHO, the less comfortable or convenient it becomes when used as a DD.
Just my two cents worth.

A couple things:
1) MSRP is not the same as invoice
2) Get a price from Koons to buy (not lease), they have a little higher doc fee then others, but you will be hard pressed to find better prices. I took Koons price to my local dealer and he came down very close to their price. I bought local because he was within a couple hundred of Koons.
3) here is the hard part: wait to get a jeep until you have the down payment! Take every penny you have and save it for 2-3 months if you work at it you will have your down payment. Cut out all excesses for those months, no Starbucks, no fancy dinners out, no ball games/sporting events, eat like a broke a$$ college kid.

If you work hard to get great prices you will actually need very little down because most banks go off NADA prices and those typically are a little higher than what you would buy the jeep for. Also don't fall for the monthly payment sales trick. Get your bottom dollar on purchase price and then worry about what payment you want to have. They will see you coming a mile away if you start out with a payment you want, they will just lengthen the term of the loan and you will get screwed

Correct!
There is a reason nearly every single salesperson will ask upfront "what are you paying?" And "where do you want your payments at?"
That's a salesperson's blank check: they have an amount, they the can cram the most amount of profit, fees, and points in.

I'm not trying to be rude, but it sounds to me like you want a vehicle you simply cannot afford. Save up and get a few thousand dollar Eco-box until your in a better spot.

I'm a big fan of leasing, but the resale on a Wrangler is obscene. My 2013 that I bought for 38K is worth 33K blue book and that's with 31K miles. My note has $13K left on it. In the case of a wrangler a lease is just throwing away money.

Also, if you get hooked like I did, you'll want to mod it and I don't know how happy they'd be with mods or taking it off roading.

The pluses and negatives of buying vs leasing aside, this thread has me wondering whether the payment calculator on Jeep.com is accurate (while obviously dependant on credit), or whether something is really wrong with it/misleading.

Anyone with any input on that?

Without seeing the contract you can't tell if it is a good deal or not. What is the money factor (interest) and what is the residual. But the numbers are pretty close and it may be a very good deal.

As jmeyers278 said, the OP was saying they were looking at leasing because they did not have money for a down payment. That is not why you lease. If your credit is good enough to lease with no money down you should have no problems buying with no money down.
As far as I can tell, leasing a Jeep will give you a monthly payment that is a couple hundred dollars cheaper, and if that is what will make the difference between you being able to get a Jeep or not, fine. But I would rather pay the extra money each month and own the vehicle out right when I am done. From what I have heard, leasing Jeeps seems like it does not make as much sense as leasing some other vehicles. But to each their own.
The one key here is that no money down can work on either option.
