Looking to possibly buy my first Jeep...few questions

Hello all. New guy here. Have always loved Jeeps, even tho I don't know a whole lot about them. I've finally decided that I may trade my current truck in on one, and I just started doing some research.

I'm looking at 2012/2013 Wrangler Unlimiteds. Sport or Sahara I'm thinking.

Now, I don't do much off-roading, only on some forest trails for hunting/camping. So this will be my daily driver. Now, some reviews I've seen said these things are not good daily driver vehicles. That they handle poorly, loud road/wind noise etc. Would any of you agree with that? If I got one I think I'd wanna lift it a bit and put on a little beefier tires.

Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated. What should I look for...what can I expect...etc.

Thanks a ton.

Since the TJ era, they're coil sprung. I think you're actually going to be surprised when you drive it. I know I was when I got my 2013.

Its a square on top of a rectangle, so yea, there is some validity to the wind noise thing as well as some buffeting in high winds. Its not to the point where its objectionable in my opinion, but I have only owned trucks since the 90's.

If you're planning on getting a 2012, its probably worth reading the head thread and learning the Julian/head codes so you can see what you're dealing with. Honestly, I'd rather buy a 2012 and take my chances with the head than the less powerful 3.8.

I think you'll find this a great community and Jeep people are awesome. Good luck in your search!

Voodoo,
Reviews are just someone else's opinion, but it's yours that matters..
Go to a nearby dealership and ask to take a test drive in a model similar to what
You might consider buying.

If you don't like the ride, it may not be for you...

Ok, you lost me (I'm not the smartest when it comes to mechanics...lol).

The 2012 and 2013 have the same engine, right? The 3.6?

And what's Julian/head codes?

Thanks guys.

2012s and 13s have same 3.6L but earlier build 12s had head issues...just google it or search on here, lots of info. So far 13s are fine. No issues in my 13 with about 9k on the odometer.

There are many cases of 2013s with head issues. Not saying its more or less common on a 2013 as in a 2012 but there have been issues on 13s as well.

I didn't realize that, thought they caught before 13s. Thanks for clarifying.

Early 2013's had the AB heads (I want to say those built before late July 2012 had AB heads)....so yeah, some of those are bad.

OP -
A Sport S or a Sahara would be a good choice.
Since you are looking at a 4 door, get the 3.73's.
My ride is pretty smooth, but the steering is numb. Just keep in mind that it is a rolling brick on solid axles.

A fully loaded Wrangler can cost a pretty penny....but it is also pretty nice on the inside.

Before getting my Wrangler a few months ago (10A Rubicon), I had driven small / medium sized trucks my whole life. My previous truck was a 2010 Nissan Frontier Pro 4X.

Based on my experience, the Jeep is no louder than the Frontier was. The wind and tire noise is nonexistant, as far as I am concerned (relative to the truck, anyway). The handling is different, but not sure I would say it is worse ... just different. It took me some time getting adjusted in the Jeep, but I do not feel like it is worse. I have had both vehicles up to 75 - 80 MPH on I-476 and they both feel secure.

The Jeep even gets better MPG than the Frontier did (17+ vs 14) on the same commute.

The one place where the Jeep falls short (in my experience) is stopping distance. It definitely needs a little more room to stop than the truck did.

Having said all that, I have no regrets about getting the Jeep, and I would do it again if faced with the same choice. I might have kept the truck instead of trading it in, but I would have still purchased the Jeep

Thanks for the replies guys.

Now, are there any major advantages for the 2013 as opposed to the 2012's? Any real changes?

I notice on the 2013 Sahara's, I've seen them online with two different types of rims. Are they both 18"? Does it signify that one Sahara might've came out earlier than the others with the different rims?

Here's what I'm talking about:

The top pic is shows the +2013 Sahara rims.
The bottom pick are optional rims for the Sahara that have been around for a couple of years. I think they were originally on the 2011 70th Anv Wrangler

I have driven pickups mostly since 1992. Always liked them for hunting and I'm just not a car guy. Also it seems like thru the 90's at least gas wasn't such a deal breaker. I also have loved the Wranglers but just 6 months ago decided to trade the truck for a Sahara Unlimited. My 06 Silverado got 17 highway, the Jeep is about 22.5 highway (cruise set about 60 MPH on both). I have a car for my DD but I think the Jeep compares well to a truck for drivability and comfort. As was mentioned already, you should go to a couple/3 dealerships and take one for a test drive equipped close to what you'd buy at each dealership. If you decide to buy one you can then compare prices between those dealers or go with the salesman you prefer if the prices are the same.
