MA Lift Laws - What is legal? Assistance Please

Started thinking about the next major mod and of course it is lift and wheels. Not sure if they will come at the same time, but thinking way ahead.

Been doing some research and found two things, but what applies more?

Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 90 Section 7P
(General Laws: CHAPTER 90, Section 7P)

No person shall alter, modify or change the height of a motor vehicle with an original manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating of up to and including ten thousand pounds, by elevating or lowering the chassis or body by more than two inches above or below the original manufacturer’s specified height by use of so-called “shackle lift kits” for leaf springs or by use of lift kits for coil springs, tires, or any other means or device.

But, the RMV in 540 CMR 6.05 states
(http://www.lawlib.state.ma.us/source...xt/540CMR6.pdf)

The maximum mechanical lift for four wheel drivemotorvehiclesshall be calculated by multiplying the wheel base times the wheel track, and dividing the product by a safety factor of 2200: i.e., 92"w/b x 58" w/t = 5336/2200 = 2" (maximum mechanical lift). The outside diameter of the largest tire size available from the original manufacturer as standard or optional equipment for the particular motor vehicle may also be increased up to an amount equal to maximum mechanical lift calculated.

Going by the calculation (2011 Wrangler Sport) it gives you 2.684".

What are fellow MA people running? Any issues with the Police or getting inspections?

Any input would help.

Thanks

Be interested how he gets an inspection sticker. MA is pretty tough on tires extending beyond the fenders, also the fines for passing vehicles that should not are huge.

I love these threads, they are usually a good read.. but why is it in the JK Tech Section? Sounds more like local section or general jeep discusion thread to me.. Laws affect everyone not just JK(U) owners

Nothing is legal in MA. What are you talking about.

Seriously though, when my old TJ and I lived in western mass, there were a TON of modded Jeeps. I never heard anyone talk about lift restrictions, so I assume it wasn't that big of a deal.

I was reading another thread where someone got hit with a ton of fines over the height of the Jeep and tires outside of the flares, and that is what spawned this thread. Wanted to see if the MA people were having issues also.

Looks like down the line I am doing a 2 or 2.5 lift. Wife is a bit short and don't have a place to trail ride around here yet so don't want to go nuts. May need to do wheels and tires later.

Well as with most thing (and probably most states) whats legal and what you cant typically get away with are 2 totally different things. My experience here in the lovely state of MA is that local cops normally won't bother you. I have heard state cops will harass you for anything over a 3" lift. Most inspection stations will let stuff slide (as illustrated by the Jeeps pictured above), but if they happen to come in and pass inspection when the registry is conducting their random unannounced audits everyone gets in big trouble. My personal experience is that they let this stuff slide and let people get comfortable with being just out side of the legal aspect of it as and excuse to pull you over and snoop around.

From the MA general vehicle laws:

Quote:
no passenger motor vehicle shall be operated on any way if such vehicle has the side wall or thread of any tire projecting outward beyond the outer portion of the fender or side body panel, unless such vehicle is equipped with four-wheel drive or is otherwise modified and intended for off-the-way use
Jeep + 4wd = AOK

No offense to our good law enforcement persons out there, but once you lay down this:

...shall be calculated by multiplying the wheel base times the wheel track, and dividing the product by a safety factor of 2200: i.e., 92"w/b x 58" w/t = 5336/2200 = 2"

Eyes glaze over like they are looking at the quadratic formula and all they hear is Lah, lah, lah!

That's why no tickets are being issued, haha

Wow, so yea. I guess that is something I don't have to worry about. My mom lives on a dirt road in a private community so I guess that qualifies as "off-the-way".

Thanks for that!

This is why I'll probably toss the Bylaws and the Jeep Specs in the glove box and have them if ever needed. Like, "Mr. Officer, By-the-way, here is the law, and I will fight you if I get a ticket."

+1

Besides, I called the MA State police headquarters to make sure tires sticking out past the flares was ok. The Trooper said 4wd vehicles are exempt from the law.

When I got my lift I asked the shop. They stated they normally don't recommend over a 4" lift in MA. That Long with no more then 2" tire to fender ratio. I had a 3" Rubicon Express lift installed and went with 33" tires. Absolutely no issues at inspection.

I live in Hyannis, MA and two gas stations refused to inspect my 89 Wrangler due to a 4" suspension lift before I found a third station that allowed it and passed it. I was born and raised in Mass and recently returned after 12 years in the Military. I don't know what happened in this state but the only thing that is legal is same sex sodomy and owning a prius.
