Mahindra Thar - What d'ya think?

The successor of the Mahindra Jeep Classic.

Ok, I'm stirring a hornets' nest

The real point is, there's no Make=Jeep in there.
Make=Mahindra; Model=Jeep or Model=Thar
Back in the day, when shipping vehicles across continents was economically infeasible, the company "Mahindra" in India made "Jeeps" modeled after the Jeeps of the WW2.
There's much in common, albeit the distance that separates the countries.

Well, Mahindra had big plans to start importing pickups to the US about two years ago, and a bunch of people were all jazzed up about it. The whole deal fell through, and now who knows...

The thar should look familiar, they were originally put together from surplus willys jeeps, so while its a cousin they are related. I actually like the look of some of the older thar's.

About the Thar. I own one. It's great and solid but not so good for extreme offroading. Else it's something different in India and I wanted to get the wrangler and since there is time to launch it I thought of getting the Thar. It's easy to modify but everything needs to be custom built as there are no ready made things available in market for it. The Diesel engine being 4cylinder lacks power so had to tune it. Overall I love it.

Fit and finish is horrible, but it's as close to a Jeep as you can probably get easily and affordably there. Not bad at all otherwise...especially if you live near the open areas. I'll keep an eye out when I go to Calcutta in December, and see what all I spot for the forum over there.

Dilsher- welcome. If you're Sikh...Sat Sri Akal, Ji.

I like it. I always enjoy checking out vehicles in other countries that are not from the well-known western-world brands. (Or places where older well-known brands are rebuilt an infinite number of times or made into something totally different, like the Jeepneys and whatnot)

It probably costs around $10,000 over there for the base model. Just keep that in mind.

Well, I know its cool these days to be a hipster/hippy... so I guess i'll wear a sweater vest every chance I get and talk to locals about stupid crap like education funding... but even then I can't bring myself to act like I like that thar thing!!

Still, I guess if I were actually in India then I'd think its pretty neat.

willys licensed mahindra to build jeeps back in the day. my father had one a cj3b that he sold prior to us moving to the US.

I made a thread about this a while ago, where there is a huge jeep culture in Punjab re: willys jeeps. basically they are using the willys bodies and powering by them ford or toyota drive trains.

thar reminds me of a CJ, and i like it.
