Making A Sun Screen

Was interested in the Spiderweb Mesh bikini tops. Was. Wrote to them a couple weeks ago for more info, no reply to date. Had me snooping around marine stores, and typically there are all the parts. Going to make my own:

1. Suspect it's the same material, marine stores got tons of different canvas, meshed fabrics, screens etc, all solid marine grade and weather resistant of course. Recon strongly suggests the brand for these type tops is: Phifertex® (This mesh fabric is recommended for breathable outdoor cushion covers, umbrellas, Awning and window shades. Provides a 60% shade factor.)

I'm thinking white for my black rubi

cost: $14.00 per yard

2. Simple black grommets. Again all sorts at a marine store brass, ss, other etc.

cost: $0.05 per set

3. Marine grade bungee cord, again all sorts of colors.

cost: $0.10 per foot

Seems pretty simple in theory. Wish me luck.

Several folks have done this before with success. As long as you get the grommets in the correct spots, you should be good to go. Be sure to post up pics when you are done.

Good to know John, those ball stretch cords are the same thing. Pretty cheap too. I can see a number off possibilities for attachment. Just waiting for the weather to warm up to remove everything for a closer look.

From your making, how did you measure it out? I'm thinking using the two panels as a template. Is the material stretchy? From the pictures of the original product they have it extremely taut and a the same time there's quite the gap between all four sides. I'd be aiming for total enclosure. Did you stitch up seams on the material, if so how?

Check out this thread over at JK-F for plenty of pics.
$27 mesh bikini top project

I personally run a custom setup like the one below. I haven't ordered the rear piece yet, but plan to before the summer gets here. This setup is a little pricey (just a couple bucks more than the Spiderweb Shade unit), but I love the fit, finish, and the ability to run the front piece without the rear or vice versa. The front and rear piece join with a zipper from a scuba dive suite. Very strong stuff. The rear piece loops around the roll bar and another scuba zipper is used there.

That's a nice tight fit. Totally integrates while the branded one looked to me to be ill fitting.

Yeah. I am very happy with the one I have. Like I said, it cost more than the branded ones, but it is a custom piece, fits perfect, and works flawlessly. The guy who made it has filed for a patent on the design. Haven't talked to him in a few months, so not sure if he was ever granted it or not. He and his father run an upholstery shop in Ohio.

Is that the guy who was making seat covers? Can't remember when I read a thread there or somewhere else, about an upholstery guy just starting to make custom seat covers. think they were a boat canvas shop or something?

Not sure if its the same guy or not. This is from a guy over at JK-F. He hasn't been around that forum for a while though.

4fit, I got mine from him also. Got the front & rear pieces, I love it.
Fits great, nice & tight with absolutely no flapping or popping at all.
He used to offer them in 2 different mesh types - light & heavy, I got the "heavy" mesh which is darker and keeps more sun out and with my black leather that helps alot to keep the seats from getting too hot to sit in.

Wow, this is super rad. Any chance this guy sells them online? If not, how do I get in touch with him?

Have you been caught in any sort of rain running with this type of cover? I know it doesn't keep rain out, but will it keep you and the jeep from getting drenched?

I have been caught in the rain and tho it may drip it keeps you drier than if you have nothing, just treat the mesh sort of like a tent - DON'T touch the drip and it will keep most of the rain out.

I'll have to look at the screen and find his ph# for you (name & ph# stitched onto screen).
I called and ordered it, had it about 2 weeks later, took that long because he made both pieces (front & rear) and sent them together.
Cool thing also was both screens came with storage bags.

Great looking rig and top!

Question, what grab handles are those?

Thanks.

FAIL

Couldn't wait. After costing out the parts where I am, the freight from the only supplier is 3 x's the cost of the product. It's that or a 8 hour round trip to where they are located. Owing to the glorious weather right now, went and bought the DirtyDog4X4 sunscreen ex-stock. Not cheap when when know what the parts cost, but without a doubt a stellar quality product. Wouldn't be able to come close to the workmanship. More imporantly it fights as flush as can be everywhere which to me is the key. Snug right up against the windshield, it uses push button clips through the footmans loop. Again flush against the roll bar cross beams along the sides with perfectly measured shock cords with hooks. There's a inch overlap at the rear, over the soundbar. Which means you can leave it one with the freedom tops.

Works like a charm, hot as hell today, totally does its job and let's in tons of light at the same time which is also key. Had more convertible sports cars double taking driving by. Mesh is for sure the way to go. Really nice when in the shade in traffic and a cool breeze swirling around everywhere.

First time eva with the panels off. Total loss of integrity of the jeep, as is the case when you take the hard top off. Loose as hell hopping all over the place. Here zooming around with the windows down and the panels off, you can tell the speakers definitely need an upgrade or some coaxing.

Otherwise all is good.

Now I just need mesh windows for the soft top, so that they can be left on when the roof is down.
