Making stock rims black

I've seen a number of posts about this and just want to get some final opinions/advice. I'm interested in doing this as I'm about to get laid off and can't afford the rims I want. Is rustoleum the only way to go? Which is better spray or liquid? Also, do you paint the lugs?

Thanks for any advice, and would love to see pics from people who have done this.

Buy Duplicolor Truck Bed Coating Truck Bed Coating, Black, 16.5 oz. Aerosol TR250 at Advance Auto Parts

From this link you will see someone who has painting their rims on their xterra using this same bed liner I used and you will see how great it looks. Trust me, its tough stuff and will not come off easily and if it gets a knick, you just respray over that area and it will blend and work its way into the knick and wont even be noticed.

I like the rustoleum for rims. Duplicolor is more rubberized. My rustpleum rims have held up beautiful and have been done since June. I clean them with a scrub brush. No,didn't paint lugs

Not sure if bed lining is how you want to go, but duplicolor makes a paint/clear system for wheels that some of us have used. If you do a good job on the prep and are handy with a spray can you can get great results.

FlameredTJ do you have any pics you can share of your rims done with the Rustoleum Bed Liner spray? I ask because I have never used or seen this spray application and would like to compare it to the Duplicolor Bed Liner. Im in the process of getting ready to buy a JKU and plan on bed lining the rims and hinges as well but before I do comparing two products would be nice. You never know, the Rustoleum might look better. Please show some pics, I would really love to see. Thanks

About what Kelsey has said, using even Duplicolor's rim paint sometimes is not always a great option. I have seen and noticed over time from friends rims they sometimes will chip or flake over time, not saying this is the case always but with the bed liner you know you have a tougher paint and its made to withstand bashing and more. Plus it goes on really easily, smooth and lays evenly. I found it easier to paint with the bed liner than with typical spray paint, as the bed liner will lay evenly, smooth and almost impossible to get running. I can tell you a 3 year old could use the spray on bed liner and make it look like Line X did it, no joke. lol. Real easy.

The best way and the way I done it was, get a drill and get a pack of cheap wire spin brushes for your drill. I got a pack at the auto store for $3. Clean your wheels really good and even wash the insides really good, although I never painted the insides, its just best to get them as clean as you can. Then use some acetone to clean the wheels before sanding or at least I do. Now by using your drill and wire spin brushes sand off, basically you are removing some of the type clear coating on the rim and scratching the rims to give a good bonding. Make sure to get into all areas of the rim. Trust me using the drill and wire sping brush beats the hell out of hand sanding by a long shot. Next wash and clean rims off and use acetone to clean them lastly. Now use newspaper and painters tape to cover the tire up. Next its your choice or not too but some people use primer before using the bed liner, I never used it and I have had no issues yet. I think it would be pointless being that its bed liner, plus it gives the bed liner more to bond to but would be different if you were painting them. Make sure to plug your lug holes up with tape, or pieces of card board or maybe wine corks. Wait about 12 to 24 hours before placing the rims back onto your Wrangler.

Are black rims an option when ordering a wrangler? The reason I ask is because I have seen posts refereeing to carbon colored rims for Rubicons and i believe the COD Rubicon also has black rims, but on the jeep website there is no option for rims.

Do a search on the forums for Bedline Rim or Bedline Wheels. There were some great write ups with shopping lists and pics on how to tape off and do the index card trick for the lugs.

It is a nice look, I was going to do it if I didn't order my wheels.

I too was on a budget and couldnt afford new wheels and tires, so I went the bedlined route. Its been about a month with no issues and they feel rock solid.
I chose the Rustoleum bedline product and couldnt believe how easy this stuff is to use. The biggest poa of the whole project for me was the hand sanding. I never thought about the earlier suggestion of buying the sanding wheels for my drill, but it has to be easier.
I did elect to prime them with a quality etching primer. I wanted black etching primer and only found it a paint store (vs a home depot type store, they all carried grey etching primer). It was the most expensive part of the project at $17 a can! (2 cans took care of 2 coats on all 5 wheels).
I do suggest painting the inside as well. I did an initial coat just on the outside and didnt like that I could clearly see the gray interior. In fact it definitely looked like a rigged DIY job.
I also removed the wheel weights(marking where they were before I removed them) and didnt paint the lugs (removed the center caps as well). I read someone suggest to cover the lug holes, but I didnt and quite frankly do not see the benefit.
Anyway, the easiest part is the bedliner. I did 3 coats. I did it all before I left for Disney so they sat for 8 days before I ever moved my Jeep.

spm488 great pics and I do like the smoothness of the Rustoleum look too. The Duplicolor gives a little textured look to it which I still am unsure whether I like the textured look of the Duplicolor or the smooth look of the Rustoleum but great pics and great job. Looks professional and again great job.

I guess whether your looking for a more textured look with the Duplicolor or a smooth look with the Rustoleum is a personal choice once it comes down to it.

I hope this helps out coolphred between the two.

The only thing I wonder about is whether the smoother Rustoleum is as tough as the more textured Duplicolor just knowing that the Rustoleum is smoother. Honestly I have no idea without seeing it upclose and personal honestly. Can you let us know spm488 how thick or durable the Rustoleum seems be?

I have no opinion about the Duplicolor since I have never used it, but the Rustoleum bonded like a rock. It was very forgiving as well. I made a mistake early on and sprayed too close. It pooled around the center and skinned over. I thought it was dry and picked up the wheel to let it stand straight. Walked back 10 minutes later, found the skin popped, it ran and dryed. I easily scrapped the run off, resprayed, and it filled perfectly. I have to say the stuff is amazing how easily it covered.
My only opinion about the Duplicolor, going on what others are saying that it is a more textured paint, is that too me that may make it obvious that it is DIY job.
The smoother (I guess, although you can feel the texture) of the Rustoleum gives it the appearance of a more manufactured black wheel.

I'm looking to blacken my stock wheels as well. My buddy is a motorcycle dude and he suggested getting high end paint from a motorcycle shop. He says he uses it all the time on his bikes. I'm probably going to go that route.

To bad the backspacing on the stockers is so bad. Both the 17 and Sahara 18 look freaking awesome bedlined.

I agree, that is why I added 1.5 wheel spacers and a 2" coil lift.

For me it is the need for a meatier tire to compliment the look, but that it not in the budget right now (especially due to that 1 extra inch they put into the Sahara wheel!).

Agree- but why spend $150-$200 for spacers when you could buy a more tire friendly 15" wheel for a little bit more.
That extra cost will equal out on to a less expensive tire. Tires for 17's and 18's cost more.

All true. Tires for my 18inch wheels were outrageous. 18inch wheels to fit my stock tires were just as bad. 15 inch wheels were reasonable, but I still wouldve needed tires, which put it out of the market for me. So, the spacers, lift and $50 in bedliner supplies won out until my tires officially need replacing.
But with only 3500 miles after 12 months of ownership I am not sure that day will ever come!

Plan for me is "all at once"

Great deal on Duratrac's on here. Under $150 I believe, that's for 33's. Wheels are $60-$70.
5 awesome Duratrac's/new wheels and a 2" BB can all be had for $1500- $2000.
This forum is great. Just have to do your homework.

Was originally eyeballing those bricks on wheels on eBay. Nitto's or whatever they ate called. $2000 just for tires and wheels heavy as hell and would kill performance
