I guess with 63 people it isn't large enough to be statistically dead on, but 20% fail rate sort of sucks. I find my logic side wanting to talk me off the cliff, and my emotional side saying, "Screw it take the leap of faith." I guess having a loaner vehicle for repairs would be a good thing to have in the paper work.

QUESTION
So would this first time new pairing of the engine/transmission be a new cause for concern on the 2012's?
I would not think so.

'12 JK Sport with 2,900 miles and no issues at all, thankfully. There's a lot of shifting done with NYC driving, and some decent highway miles, so it's seen most aspects of the road.

2010 2 door export model, no issue with the drivetrain (apart from the rear transfercase seal popped out at 1000km)

With now 68/10 no problems, I would say you could increase that dramatically. Most people who never have problems, never look for forums for answers...

90k on my '07, no major problems with the transmission itself, did have the seal at the shifting lever replaced unde warranty. Have had issues with the clutch.

18k (self inflicted) sucked mud into the clutch, replaced clutch, throw out bearing and slave cylinder

34k slave cylinder failed

80k clutch disk shredded, replaced with a Centerforce Duel Friction

7 degrees today. Was expecting some issues. A little difficult getting into 2nd gear. Really had to make sure it was fully engaged.
Other than that.. No problems.
5-10 min of warm up

kjeeper, I've found on mine that when it's cold, it helps to double clutch until the tranny warms up a bit. Makes going into 2nd a lot easier.

I have 470 miles on mine and it does the same thing, pretty much only when it's cold. It really bugs me though, is it just a Jeep thing or should we be taking them in?

If it only happens when its cold its because transmission fluid has not warmed up yet and it takes a little bit more muscle to put it in gear. When its popping out its because you probably didn't set it all the way in.

Just remember if its cold and the engine hasn't warmed yet, push a little harder on the stick to set it.

Perfectly normal.

Mine does the same in cold weather, just take your time going into 2nd. If you need to get somewhere fast don't drive the Jeep!

I disagree. Not normal. My 12 JKU manual in the shop for second time for 4th popping and grinding, this time when cold. If it is normal, and I'm asking as I don't know, why not with the other gears and why the dealer isn't saying anything other than "Oh, dear, bring it in"?

Manual states possible difficulty shifting when cold.
Actually popping out of gear, don't know.

All I know is it would be easy to not fully engage any gear when cold. I make sure I have it in gear before I let the clutch out.
No issues yet.

On second look of this thread..Id have to say the same about my 2012..I have noticed it popping out of fourth. Its happened maybe 4 times. Ive only had it 12 days so I'll have to keep an eye on it. Though for me I've had no problem getting into 4th..just that it pops... interesting!

Hmmm not sure. I'll go ahead and add to what I said. I speak for 2010 Wranglers. That's been my experience.

2012 JKU Sahara

2012 JKU Sahara 2860 miles

I've noticed that in cold weather shifting seems a bit notchy. That and shifting into 1st is difficult at times. It seems that the notchy feeling and hard into 1st are related in that when it won't easily shift into 1st the next few shifts through the other gears is more notchy. There are times when I literally can't get into first gear unless I ghost shift through 2nd and 3rd then back to 1st. Oddly, this seems to occur every time when I'm turning into my garage after a brief downhill in 2nd on my driveway. The tranny should be nice and warm by the time I get home, so maybe it's not the cold? It may just be a "Head Thing" now with me trying to force the shift to 1st too early.. I noticed that it helps to let the synchro allow the shift to "fall" into first with just minimal pressure on the stick. I've not had the poping out of 4th problem. I've had the Sahara since August and didn't recall have a problem until it turned cold.

2012 JKU Sahara 3300 miles

So far, I really do not like these JK manual 6-speeds so far. Is it just me? Or just my transmission? So far, it is almost to the point of not being fun to drive, and I love manuals.

I've been driving manuals for almost 20 years now. I also have a 2002 TJ 5-speed. So, my comments are not for lack of knowing how to drive a manual or even being new to Jeeps.

I've seen many others' comments on these forums detailing some of my observations, but not all. Here's what I experience.

- sometimes can be very hard to get out of 1st (almost like you have to yank it out)
- sometimes can be difficult to get into 2nd (seems to require extra force)
- all gears are a bit crunchy to some degree. 1st and especially 2nd more so than the others.... sometimes shifting can be smooth as butter. other times, it is crunchy and notchy, etc. there doesn't seem to be any consistency to it (warm, cold, fast, slow shifting). in comparison, my old TJ is smooth as butter all the time.
- i also hear a strange metallic rattling sound sometimes coming from the tranny. it is more prominent in 4th when the rpms are low (below 2000) and it is lugging just a bit (i.e. cruising in 4th and then you give it throttle to accelerate). the noise is only there when you're giving it throttle, say between 1500-2000 rpm. i've heard it in other gears, but mostly in 4th. sometimes it's there, other times it's not, I can't find any trends.
- even my gear shift makes noise when you're moving it around the gearbox. nothing major, just sounds like a quiet notchy sound as it moves through the gears.

I've casually talked with a couple dealerships. Both have said something along the lines of, "well, that's just these transmissions", or "give it a little time to break in". My plan is to take it in at 5,000 miles and have them look at it, so that I can prove it has a good amount of miles on it.

Any other thoughts? I love everything on the JK compared with my old TJ except this tranny. I guess if everyone else's is similar, I'll just live with it. Obviously, what I want to ultimately find out is whether or not mine is different than most.

2011 JKU Rubi. Some times I cant get it to go into reverse, the shifter will go all the way down but I only get the sencos grinding when I let out on the clutch. I will have to put it into 1st and let out on the clutch a bit. Of corse last time it was in having work done on it they couldnt find anything wrong with the tranny. I'm thinking its a linkage that needs adjusted.

12' only 4 months old. 3rd starting popping out on rare occasions but it got impossible just recently. Took it in and they replaced the spring and a few other things. Still did so after the repair so a whole transmission is on express order. Its not a big inconvenience or worry. Only issue I've had with the Jeep so far and thats with mods.

I don't have any popping out of gear or hard shifts but how you described everything else is right on.
I myself came from a 5 speed Tj.
For the longest time could not figure out what the "metallic" sound. Almost sounded like a bad pulley. Chalked it up as a "jeep thing"
Now I know what it is -I hardly pay
attention to it any more. It is a noisy tranny- I hear ev-ery-thing. The clutch squeak does bother me, everybody always asks "what is that?" So I turn up the radio and say "what is what?"

You have every right to have it looked at if new... I would. hope they don't give you the "we can't replicate the problem" lol
