Question Manual or Automatic transmission

I know there are pros and cons for getting either a manual transmission or automatic transmission. How long does it take to get use to shifting gears on the wrangler? What are some pros and cons of getting either transmission?
I purchased a manual because of the cost savings and better control over the vehicle in the winter. I can see where an automatic could be pretty good too. Your thoughts?

It is mostly a matter of personal preference. There are many, many threads covering this topic on these forums.

I prefer manual for many reasons you already described and I also want full control at all times.

6 speed trumps automatic for alot of reasons

but i guess how would you be able to sip your frappucino without automatic?

Don't know if this helps but over here the Auto seems a bit sluggish. I've recently traded my Auto for the Manual and love it!! Personal prefrence I agree.....

Automatic if it is a 2012. Though I guess I would still get auto even on other models. I've had so many clutch systems over the years in all kinds of vehicles; I will never go back again...

On the 2012 models with the new engines I can still choose to put the car into manual by using the column shifter to choose the gears (On older models this is not an option though...). Using this setup I can manually choose the gear that the car is in without having to constantly push an antiquated clutch system in with my foot. I get the best of both worlds with that setup as far as I am concerned...

Since you already have purchased a standard and you are wondering how long it takes to get used to it, I'll start there. I went from an automatic caravan....cause they didn't have it in standard....that I drove for seven long years back to a standard in my jeep. It took me a year and a half to get totally back into a standard. I shift now like I never went to automatic. I also think it is easier to coordinate the feet on my Rubicon with 4.1 gears than it was on my Sahara with 3.73. I drove the Sahara for 8 months before Chrysler bought it back from me. The extra torque off of the stop makes things a little easier. All in all, I will never go back to an automatic unless something happens to one of my legs. But I don't drive standard for a living so I like driving one to get from point A to point B....especially through the woods!

don't understand this comment.....even on an antique 08 JK I can choose my gear with the shift stick, or leave it in auto.

Well, he mentioned COLUMN SHIFTER to choose gears and the COLUMN is the STEERING column-

manual all the way, automatics get too hot and burst into flames

Ah. I didn't know that you could do it on older models (the last time I had a Jeep Wrangler it was a manual in the 80s...). I guess I would choose auto no matter what then...

"After driving a Volkswagen a couple of blocks, shifting becomes automatic".

I've had and have both, they both work, get the one you like best.

On TJ Forums that I used to visit, this was the 2nd most posted question, behind only "how do I turn off my dome lights when the doors are off?"

FWIW I went from the NV3550 in the TJ Rubi (5spd manual) to the W5A580 (5spd auto) in a 4dr JK Rubi. I'll miss the manual transmission a bit, but the new auto is a smooth and precise enough gear box that I'll cope with it. I wouldn't get the previous 4spd auto in the JK based on reputation.

An auto with the +/- to shift into a specific gear is in no way similar to a manual transmission. It is still a slow shifting, do what it wants thing. I'm just saying...

Indeed, but it is good enough for the situations where I would ever need to use manual, such as particular low speed off-road situations. Likewise, the automatic will make my life more enjoyable for regular driving, especially in traffic and city driving with all of the stop and go. I get tired of using the clutch off and on in those situations for long stretches.

This isn't a supercar; I don't need it to up rev or down rev when shifting up or down in order to get the best lap times at the track. My sportscar does these things. The manumatic does enough for the situations in which I would want to shift the Jeep into a lower gear at slow speeds. The manumatic gives me all the control that I need over the gears. I don't need to drive a Jeep like a racecar in manual (heel to toe shift, ride the clutch, etc.) in any situations in which I would use it. Likewise, I gain a more comfortable drive for myself in 90% of my driving life.

The thing I can't stand in all the autos I've ever driven is the pause between stepping on the gas and anything happening. It's frustrating when trying to make a turn in traffic or when passing. I don't heel/toe or any if that crap in my XJ, but I do like that it goes when I need it to, no wait fir the tranny to catch up to the engine.

I've never had that happen when shifting a vehicle in manumatic mode. I have had it happen in automatic even in my GT-R, but never when using manumatic modes.

Own both!

Auto's are great for standard travel, I love the auto on the floor. My first was a stick, loved it, but got tired of shifting. Got an auto, loved it, but missed the control over shifting. Got a stick, loved it, but again, there are times when shifting is a pain. got an auto, love it, but still miss that control.



I'll tell you one thing, drinking a "can" is a hell of a lot easier in an auto than a stick!
