Manual Shift Knob Removal

I have a 2010 Jeep Wrangler Sport, 3.8L, 6-speed manual and I am looking for information on removing the shift knob. I have a custom one that needs to be drilled and painted still, however I was hoping to take a look at the old one for sizes/possible drilling options for the custom one being made. I'm having a difficult time finding any info at all, any help?

The shift knob is two pieces and it pulls off.

1. Use a screw driver and pry off the bottom cap. It starts right under the rubber grip.

2. Pop that off & slide it down then grab the shifter handle, put it in 4th gear and PUUUUUUULLLLLL.

3. Scream expletives, as appropriate, as you smack yourself in the face with it and you're done!

I couldn't pull mine off, and I had the same question 2 months ago. Pry off the bottom cap. Wrap a towel around the shifter and put a wrench under it. Use a hammer and bash the fxxx out of it.

For the 4wd shifter if anyone wants to know about that, theres a retaining pin inside. You have to pry off hte top, remove the pin, and it slides right off. I ended up just cutting mine off because it pissed me off.

See, with the Rubicon I got a special option - mine just pulled off the very first day I owned it. I am still dealing with it, but recently it further helped me by falling apart completely. I suppose I should be thankful this feature was so thoughtfully included...no trouble removing it.

HAHAHAHA

this thread is hysterical...

How are folks liking the billet replacement knob? I actually really like the feel of the oem knob in my hand, and think I might not like the billet's cylindrical looking shape when it comes to feel.

What else are folks using? I definitely don't like the plastic chrome look of the OEM...might go with an 8-ball at some point.

rocknob billet knob. It has a great feel and is much more comfortable than pool ball knobs...and a hell of a lot nicer looking.

I bought a plain black glossy knob with the 6 speed pattern from a company called sickspeed on eBay. The kit comes with a smaller version for the 4wd shifter. Great update to the stock 2012 shifter which never felt right to me. The sick speed knob adds a little height, maybe 3/4", which I like. Getting the stock knob off was a real pain. Took me 4 attempts with a dish towel for grip and full pull with two hands. It finally popped off cleanly when I gave it a little wiggle.

Well, if you go with EPCO you can send them your 325th Abn Inf Reg crest and have them embed it in the knob for you...

If you like it enough for your Avatar, might worth looking into.

now that there is a great idea!! Maybe a crest on shifter and master wings on the transfer case. You got me thinking.
Thank you DJL..........
