Manual to Auto conversion?

I have a 2012 Unlimited Sahara with a 6spd trans. Due to a recent knee injury in Afghanistan (not combat related) I may need to convert to an automatic. Is this possible and what is the best guesstimate for cost? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you considered selling your Sahara, then using USAA to get a great deal on another 2012 with auto. Might come out better that way....

And, thank you for your service!

Thank you sir for your kind words. I have financed through USAA and they are great. I am certain to lose money but I am willing to look into it. Trade loss vs. conversion cost...it's always about money. haha

Doesn't matter if it was "combat related" or not. You were still there. Thanks from a Vietnam vet.

Glad that you're back. It wouldn't be cost effective. It's not a simple swap. Unfortunately, the best thing would be to obtain a JK with an auto. The hit you'll take on a sale or trade would probably be equivalent to a conversion. Probably would be less of a loss. Good luck.

Thank you for your service and get well ASAP. Its nice to know I have the freedom to drive my jeep because of men like you. My brother is a marine so I know the deal, Semper fi!

As far as the swap goes it may be easier to just get one thats an auto as was stated already. Weigh out your options and good luck.

i would trade for an automatic.its not that simple anymore as just bolting up and automatic.there are computers involved and the engine management is mapped different for manual to automatic..besides after the swap there will be no warranty on your 2012 new wrangler.

That's not an option for the OP. He needs the automatic.

Because of the computer issues involved and the cost of the new auto tranny, I doubt it would be cheaper to convert then the lose in a trade. The good thing is a Wrangler has excellent resale value which takes a lot less hit then many other vehicles.

Unfortunately i know about having to get a Auto because of military injuries. One of the reason I drive a Auto. I got 80% service connected disability rating and draw 100% because of it.

Besides the fact he needs an auto because of injuries, he has a 2012 so the 5 speed auto's gearing is close to the same as the manual for that year.

First - Thanks for your service to our country.

I would try and go the route of trading it for an auto. Changing transmissions like that is major and I wouldn't want to deal with the issues.

Have you thought of converting to a hand clutch. Look up vehicle modification companies for the disable. I saw a truck diver that had neither leg and he was driving a manual truck.

This is hard. You need thousands of dollars of parts. You need a clutch pedal, clutch slave and master cylinders, hydraulic lines, transmission, clutch, possibly bracketss for the transfer case, possibly a transfer case, possibly driveshafts. Theres also most likely a computer for the auto.

a donor vehicle would be helpful. I doubt youll find a jk at the junkyard with anything usable. Even then itd be expensive.

If you want to come to michigan i would swap with you. I have a 08 but only 28000 miles.

Perhaps there is some sort of modification that can be done to the foot->clutch mechanism itself to allow you to flick your ankle up and down instead of your knee, if you know what I mean.

Just thinking outside the box...

As a Veteran myself, I want to thank you for your service.

You may want to consider selling on your own to get more money than you would trading it in. You have to have the stomach for low-ballers and have patience, but would definitely get more money in the end.

Thank you for your service. The automatic transmission alone costs a little over 3k. After that you may need a new computer to accommodate the new transmission. And then you'd have to add labor, new interior center console, and various other components to make it work

The clutch is controlled by a button on the shifter. It has an electronic unit that handles clutch actuation to prevent stalls. Its very cool, but complex and looks expensive.

Right hand drive vehicle, but you can see the components:

I was looking to go Auto to Manual in my Mustang a little whiles ago, trust me its a headache and everyone aswell told me to just sell and rebuy a stick. Needless to say I stuck with my auto, couldn't let him go.

You'd save quite a bit selling and buying an auto though IMO... And factual numbers lol.

Thank you for doing what you do to allow us others do what we enjoy to do. (:
