Manual Transmission Back-ache

...anyone here old enough to be familiar with this phenomenon?

...i've had to use the 2010 JK as a daily driver this last year and my back has gone out on me at least 3 times and i'm thinking the common denominator is hammering down on that clutch 6 days a week to and from work.

...i think i gotta take the jeepster out of DD duties.

...am i on to something or am i just on something?

I can see how it could happen. Especially with the long throw on the Jeep clutch.

My back is messed up from years of commercial construction and boxing. Sometimes I'll tweak it just right and it'll flare up for a day or two. And some days I don't even know what I did to it.

My Rubi clutch is like a luxury vehicle compared to my YJ. I think if I was going to do the DD thing I would have gotten an auto. Traffic in my area sucks to have a manual for every day use. I don't know about throwing your back out though. Maybe there's another issue going on. Age is something that hopefully happens to everyone.

Don't think it will cause it be if you have back injuries it will aggravation the situation. The reason I had to get a Auto was because of my back issues and sciatica.

I don't know about causing you to throw out your back from driving a clutch even if it is a jeep...you don't even have to fully push the clutch in all the way to shift...shift your seat forward an inch or two? get some lumbar support in it too, maybe a small pillow for now. my seats are comfortable!

It's more likely lack of Lumbar support in the seat..... You can get a cushion at back stores that works well. If your not sure, try a small throw pillow if you have one.

You're probably aggravating something that's already there. Try Casotakar's suggestions and maybe see a chiropractor if you haven't before. I DD mine and don't have any problems, but then I don't have the 30 mile bumper to bumper commute that I used to have in Seattle anymore (had a stick then too). I will say, the Jeep is way better clutch-wise than my previous vehicle a 350Z. Sports car clutch + DD is a pain. It was about twice as stiff and engagement was pretty much it was in or out and if you did it wrong you got chatter and/or would stall it.

Yes...it could easily be a factor. I blew my back out many years ago and driving a stick on my daily commute hampered my recovery when I'd have a relapse.

Can definitely see this happenning, its like the clutch is made for 6'1 plus people. When I test drove the 12 jk manual, I felt my whole seated area sliding around to put the clutch in. that's why I went auto.

Give this a try--

You have to depress the clutch ALL THE way for IGN. start, but from then on, just depress the clutch pedal 1' for each shift--

It's hydraulic, the first 6" disengageit !!

Good luck

...yeah, my back was already screwed up some from years of abuse basically...i do have a 'lumbar support' cushion in use ( stock seats, for me, suck ).

...it was actually a guy at work who made the connection, jeep/back, for me.

...oh, and i'm very familiar with the chiropractor's voodoo. life savers.

...i didn't buy the Jeep to be a DD in the first place so having a reason like this to relegate 'er back to weekend jaunts might just be a good thing.
