Max tire carrier load wrong in manual?

As I was dippin' the stock Sahara rims today, I wondered what the total weight was, since I will be upgrading eventually. I want to make sure whatever I buy will be held by the carrier. I saw that the manual says 50lb including spare.

From having just lifted the wheel, I knew 50lb was way off, so I weighed it myself at 71.2lb.

I pinched the tire from the sidewalks to keep it from tipping, but I know I didn't add 20lb from touching it. This is the stock wheel and tire for a 2013 JKU Sahara.

I've seen some people asking about carrier weight before and whether aftermarket wheels would tip the balance, but I've never seen anyone absolutely sure about the stock weight. Hope this helps someone out.

I believe by gross weight they mean gross added weight. Like with several weight additions, the total has to be less than 50 cuz as you showed the wheel and tire is about 75

I started a thread on this and Jeep apologists attacked me. I wouldn't trust the longevity of that tailgate--it's a very weak, poor design. Should be mounted to the frame from from the factory, but like everything else Jeep, you have to mod it yourself. My $33k JKUS is now $39k...so not worth it. Jeeps are cool, but not $40k cool.

....And by the way, the manual is wrong, but Jeep ignores the matter... Like you said, 72 lbs. is the weight for a Rubi. rim/tire combo... but manual says 50 lbs. max. What gives? Fiat blows...

Wrong. Go back and read the manual again. It says "including the weight of the spare tire."

"accessories" is plural, so i think if they were talking about 50 lbs of added weight, it would say "they."
reading this forum has made me more and more skeptical about Jeep's quality control... I agree with you chief, it sucks that something already relatively expensive has to be modded so much. i know that half the fun of a jeep is customizing it and making it unique, but you would expect the factory to at least put out designs and factory parts that will hold up till swap time (and manuals free of potential typos). Im worried about the direction the company is headed in.

What's missing from the factory:

-frame-mounted tire carrier
-front bumper light guard/hoop option
-locking gas cap/cover option
-A LIFT that'll accept real (mud) tires!
-Swap of Moab wheels/tires for Mopar wheels/mud tires...you have to sell the Moabs + stock tires yourself
-Leather on a Sport
-Door entry guards
-Tail light guards
-Grab handles

That's all I can think of in 1 min...

It's 50lbs over the weight of the spare. So, if you go to a 35" tire on an aluminum rim, you probably won't exceed the rating. Mine isn't. I have many friends running this way for years on gnarly trails with no issue.

It can't be wrong. If the 29's are 58lbs and the rubi spare is 74lbs then either the rating is wrong or it's only extra

It's extra weight can't be more than 50 lbs

What the hell do you mean it can't be wrong??? Of course it can be wrong! I believe it is WORDED wrong in the manual.

Here's a test: Give 5 people that page to read in the manual (without any coaching) and ask them to summarize what they've read. I got the same answer all 5 times! 50 lbs. TOTAL!

What it comes down to is ratings. Although all of those things would be great, it would mean that the wrangler would have to be rated at something like 14mpg highway and then they just couldn't sell it easily. Cost effectiveness is also the other reason. It would make the wrangler cost even more

Yeah, no shiit...and I'd rather pay the factory the extra money, have it all done, not have to sell parts nobody desires, and have it ALL covered under warranty... sign and drive.

Thats like when the first time someone hears, what weighs more 1 pound of feathers or one pound of lead. How many people get caught with that one. If you read the manual and comprehend, its clear. I agree it could be worded different to make it more clear

That's what I'm saying...just read it with virgin eyes and describe what you read... Pretty clear: 50 lbs. (including weight of tire). Fiat chooses to ignore this.

So because the manual is worded wrong, and Fiat won't address it, what we still don't know is how much weight the tailgate can handle?

I say, not much. These things couldn't reliably hold a Trek mountain bike tire for 5 years without popping welds or bending hinges...

I thought this vehicle was "manlier"... I feel like I can break it with ease... Probably gonna go back to Ford.

It's not just the weight that is a problem. It's also the distance from the tailgate. A mountain bike hangs off pretty far compared to a basket above the tire.

The tailgate is actually stronger than ppl say its not actually that weak.

As far as your problem with fiat: In reality people will put their bike racks and ski racks on the jeep even if fiat said "WARNING: do not use any accessories on tailgate" luckily most ppl have enough common sense that after they read what it says, they think: hmm the spare weighs more than that. It must be accessories
