Mechanic says $450 for new Blower and resistor HELP

Fan was clicking then stopped altogether.
Ac/heAt still work fine BUT no fan on any speed.

Took to garage they put new fuse in and
Blower came back on BUT mechanics stated
it was only a temporary fix and I needed new
blower motor and resistor as well to be safe.

Parts and labor $496!

Ugh.....drove it one more day and as they stated blower and fan
stopped again.

That price seemed excessive and after reading every thread
about blower/resistor I noticed the parts could be had
for well under $100 so the excessiveness was confirmed.

My skills with a screw driver are that of a
3 year old BUT is this something I can tackle myself?

Also: Anyone in northwest Florida willing to do this for case of beer
and a hundred dollar bill please let me know.

Something near $250 (parts and labor) would be about right at a Chrysler/Jeep dealership.

Call a dealer and get an estimate, then call a few shops and get estimates, that should give you a better idea of cost.

I don't know about a jeep but usually that resistor pack just screws into the ductwork with a plug. On some vehicles it's on the firewall. Google it.
It's often a 10 minute task (but you have to contort your body to get to it)

Same with blower motor replacement (google). Sometimes you need to move the cage over (again, pretty easy).

You can handle it and you wont even need a screwdriver!

This is one of the easiest repairs you can do on a JK. If you have all your parts it should take you about 40 minutes to do this, even as a first timer!

Before you start, look at the housing and read these instructions. You can see everything you will have to do with the exception of one nut.

There is a plug at the top, passenger side of the fan housing. The resistor is connected to that plug. The resistor wiring harness is about $60.

Step by step...

1. Remove the Christmas tree retainers from the plastic covers at the top and bottom of the radiator. You will need a pair of wire cutters for this. Use the jaws to get under the sides of the head and lift. They may or may not be reusable. New ones are cheap.

2. Remove the top of the air filter housing by releasing four clips. Move the top out of the way. Pull the lower filter housing straight up. There are three push connectors on the bottom that will release. Set this aside.

3. Unplug the plug at the top, passenger side of the fan housing.

4. Disconnect the radiator overflow hose from the radiator, at the radiator cap.

5. Remove the overflow tank by pulling it straight up. Set it aside.

6. There are only two screws near the top, one each side, that hold the fan housing in. They require an 8mm socket. Remove those. The fan housing will want to lean towards the engine. Observe where the bottom mounts slide down into the radiator mounts.

7. Lift the fan housing straight up to remove it. Find a table to work on for the next steps.

8. Remove the screw that holds the resistor (10mm socket) to the fan housing. Unplug the resistor harness from the fan motor and remove the harness. You will reuse the screw.

9. The fan is held on to the motor with one left hand nut. Remove it by turning the nut as if to tighten it (10mm socket). You will not want to reuse this.

10. Flip the housing and remove three screws (10mm socket). This will remove the fan motor. You will reuse these screws.

Install the new parts in the reverse order. Literally.

Notes...

You will want to get a new nut to mount the fan to the new motor. Remember to turn it as if to loosen it for the install. I believe the part number is 5137718AA (about $4).

The fan motor will only install one way. Line up the plug receptacle to the opening in the fan housing.

The fan is indexed to the motor. Gently rotate it on the motor until it drops in. If you have to force it, it's wrong.

If you have to force anything, it's wrong.

When you tighten things, just snug them down good, don't crank on them!

Take your time and pay attention to how things come apart and you'll be fine!

WOW Mr. King AWESOME of you to write this out, great info.

Another tip i like to give is take a pic of things before you remove, if you get confused as to how they were, you can refer back to the pic you took before removal to put things back the way they go. That has never failed me..lol!

Wait I'm confused.

Whats the need for removing the radiator overflow and airbox?

The cabin air blower is behind the glovebox in the passenger footwell.

Alldata shows blower motor OE part number 68018105AA $85.70 and 0.5 labor. Resistor OE part number 68089118AA $88.35 0.4 hours labor this is for a 2012 JKU

I read the original post and saw, in my mind, the engine radiator fan and resistor. I hate it when that happens, starting right now!

My grandfather always said crow tastes best when eaten warm. I'll have that bite now!

Thanks for all the great advice gang. I called around and found a guy willing to do it for $75 labor and ofcourse I purchase parts. Been seeing different prices on websites.

Blower motor $65-$120
Resistor $20-$75

The original estimate called ONLY for those
2 parts....will this be all that I need to purchase in parts?

Working perfectly....pretty pissed that the quotes were saying 2.2 hours of labor. Honestly, this was as easy as putting gas in my jeep.

Kneel down unscrew 2 screws on resistor and 3 for blower motor, unsnap harnesses and replace with new parts, tighten screws done!
