Mechanical issue or small stone in power train ?

Guys, maybe somebody has experience with this strange thing.
We drove on easy off road (just an unpaved road, nothing special) with 4Hi, and after small stop, when I tried to shift to rear gear, I heard a metal knock, and my car turned wheels with stops. When wheels stopped (they could turn only on 1/2 of whole turn), I heard this knock. After that, wheels could turn to another 1/2 (or less) and knocked again. For me it looked like something inside of transmission, power train or other rotors with cog-wheels prevented to move wheels... I thought it was small stone. I looked everywhere and did not find anything strange.
I turned off 4Hi, shifted to 1st gear and moved forward with the same issue. I shifted gear from read to 1st and moved forward and back for a couple feet. After several attempts it started to work again. So, we drove 300 miles after that without any issues.

What it can be? Just small stone which can block wheel rotation / power train / transmission, and which was milled by cog-wheels (I don not know if it is possible) ? Or mechanical issues ?

It was just binding. Even though it may have been an unpaved road, it wasn't loose enough to allow for wheel slippage. You most likely should not have been in 4WD. If you did that on a regular basis you could end up with some mechanical issues, as it is you should be fine. When you engage 4WD your front and rear drive wheels will turn at the same speed. When you turn the front wheels, one of the wheels is turning faster than the other. If you were on a slippery surface, the wheel spin would correct for this. Since you were not, the binding occurs and you may even experience some wheel hop as it attempts to correct it.

I know that.. this road has enough sand and small stones to allow wheels to make turns with 4WD...

4WD is to be used sparingly- if you're not slipping in 2WD, you don't need 4WD. You want to shift over right before you hit that point. It sounds like daggo is 100% right- your t-case can't shift instantly- it takes a few turns of the driveshaft before the front end is disengaged again- that's more than likely what you're hearing- Mark W.

If these symptoms point to incorrect usage of 4WD (road was not sleepy and soft enough), I have to be more careful with off road... I tough that 4wd can't be used on hard surface, like asphalt, but can be used on unpaved road.
How you can define that this road is good for 4wd? or better turn to 4wd only if you can pass it with 2WD?

I usually engage 4hi as soon as I hit the trailhead...whether I need it or not. The trails at RC can change pretty quickly so I just stay in 4hi. Until 4lo is needed. Maybe the unpaved road you were on was too hard packed, not soft enough. If its an unpaved road, then its probably traveled enough to keep the dirt/gravel packed in good.

I do it by the same way. I was confused about this issue, and I just want to know if this is exactly because of 4wd & surface (but i usually careful about that, surface was not hard)

Sorry did not see your answer.
Just have re-read everything and now I see a whole picture (thank you and daggo).
If it happens again (I hope not, but anyway) - what I have to do ?
Do I need to show jeep to mechanic right now?

When it just happens once it a while it is unlikely any damage has occurred. A good rule of thumb for whether or not you might need 4WD is to ask yourself if a car could drive down that road/trail/path. If you could make it in a car, you do not need 4WD. Your Jeep in 2WD is going to handle rough terrain better than any car.
