Military Discounts

Hey everyone!

I'll be heading out to boot camp for the Navy in a couple of months, and then to San Diego for further training.

As far as I know, we're allowed to have cars on base.

Now, I'm interested in getting a Wrangler Sport, and wanted to see if I should wait and see what my military discount might get me, if I have one.

Thanks!

Yes $500. If you you show your orders to the dealership they should honor them. If you get your Jeep after Boot Camp show your ID card!

If you go in on Veterans Day, they give you a Wrangler for free. I may have Jeep confused with Applebee's, though.

actually we do.

hows bootcamp these days? I was in the last division to run through the old battlestations back in 07. had a great time, the new version looks like the same thing with a little more realism.

I lived in san diego for 5 years, enjoy the perfect tops off weather 11 months out of the year!

I was stationed in San Diego for 3 years...I took the soft top off the day I got there and didn't put it back on until the day before I left. Perfect place to have a Jeep!

I am surprised you can have a car or Jeep in Boot Camp. In the Marines we could not even keep our civies, had to send them home, as they said " If the Corps doesn't give it to you, you don't need it"

She said she could have a car on base in San Diego after boot camp which is in Great Lakes. Some of us in the Navy did lots and lots of push ups, flutter kicks, 8 count body builders, etc.........

Enjoy having a Wrangler, shipmate.

The Navy Exchange has car buying programs through ENCS that might offer some better pricing than just going through a dealership.

Set up your banking with Navy Federal Credit Union. You should get the best interest rate on the loan thru them. Get your insurance thru USAA.

I'm an Army Aviator and USAA has always been my go to on banking, insurance, and auto loan rates. They have a car buying program wish is $500 under invoice and the dealers that they have honor that. Really easy to do, and welcome to the service!

Thanks everyone!

Believe me, we sailors do a lot of pushups. I've been training with some sailors at my local park, and I'm not sure I can even feel my legs anymore.

As for the insurances and all, thanks for the info. I wouldn't have known about that. Thanks!

Most of the car buying programs from the exchange require you to be overseas. Credit unions have car buying programs, but you may want to look into joining Tread Lightly - they can give you access to 'affiliate pricing' from Chrysler, which can be used in addition to the $500 Jeep Military rebate.

Navy Federal will have the best rates on the car loan, and there is not enough money in the world to go back to paying more for bad service from USAA - they charged me more and undercut the value of a totaled car (a corolla, nothing special) 30% in spite of evidence I provided that their third-party valuation was wrong.

Can you afford to lose your car and not have the insurance company perform the task they were paid for - getting you back in an equivalent vehicle ? Most junior Enlisted can't, so I council avoidance of the USAA thieves who hide behind a pro-Military marketing strategy.

You may want to wait until you see where your first set of orders take you before pulling the trigger.

I was in the Army, about a million years ago but we were not allowed to have cars on post during AIT. I think they had parking issues, and did not allow soldiers not permanently stationed there or higher ranking folks on temp duty- even some of the E3s in our AIT were not permitted to keep a vehicle on post. The NCOs on temp duty for schooling were allowed to have a vehicle, though.

I'd double check the rules on that before buying a vehicle. It's possible that the Navy base has much more lenient rules on parking and things, but I know that space seems to be at a premium.

Keep in mind that until you get orders for your permanent duty station that a Jeep may not be a great investment for now. It'd be great to have in San Diego- but what about after that?

Chief brings out a good point, Tread Lightly will cost you $100.00; But you will get your Jeep at 1% below invoice plus your $500 dollar Mil Bonus. If you have not ordered a brochure from the Jeep site do so. Once you get on the mailing list they may send you a $500 coupon.

So in summery; Tread Lightly 1% below invoice, $500 mil bonus, $500 Chrysler coupon....Not a bad deal!!!

PS... Be sure to listen to your Div. Cheif he/she will be your Sea Daddy or Sea Mommy until you become a Salt.

And as a reminder, not only does the service member get a $500 military discount from Jeep, but so do familly members. My new Wrangler and my wife's newish Grand Cherokee were purchased with that $500 help from my Army son.

I would hope you've done a realistic budget for this new purchase. Wranglers are not cheap in retrospect to other vehicles on the market. Starting as an E1 unfortunately does not pay a whole lot! Just make sure you realistically budget your car payment, insurance, gasoline, and then the important stuff like food.

Not trying to push you away from a brand new jeep, but take an honest look at it. There are way to many junior sailors living paycheck to paycheck.

Also I recommend the exchange navy car sales as mentioned above. I bought mine on deployment in 2012 and saved a ton more than $500!

ChiefDan, I learned long ago as a JO not to argue with the Chief but......... My experience with USAA for over 30 years has been great. They have always treated me right.

Spot on. The car sales programs run through the military exchanges/stores require you to be overseas when you make your purchase. And taking delivery of that vehicle overseas means ridiculous mark up on the price as you have to pay the import and transportation fees. Really only a worthwhile program if buying a vehicle to have it waiting for you when you return from overseas.

Where do you get the Chrysler coupon? I am a part of tread lightly already, and am military.
