Minor annoyance.

I've done this a dozen times or so since I have bought my 09 LK. There is this little cover above the pedals. It has this little square sensor(so it looks like) attached to it. I am constantly hitting it with my foot and causing the whole cover to fall off... often when I am driving. Then it hangs by the wire on that sensor and flips around until I can safely re connect it.

What is that little square sensor box for?

Would it help if I posted a picture? Because if it is nothing of great importance I am going to jsut remove the little square thing and the cover completely. Just would rather know what it is before I do so.

Do you have electric brake set up for a trailer? Mine looks different but they mounted it way to the right. If it is electric brake, then the trailer hitch electrical plug will be round with 6 or 7 contacts. Hmmmm...mystery box.

I think it's a web-cam.
Did you buy the Jeep from Joe Francis?

I knew it! Someone is spying on my crotch while I drive! Ha ha ha!

Actually, I don't even have a tow package at all. I'll remove the plate and take a few more pics. This morning my foot kicked it off again on the way to work. :\

Did you buy the Jeep new or used?
I'd guess it's some kind of aftermarket alarm system. Doesn't look like anything OEM to me.

The wire setup with the plate removed.

The actual connector piece.

The back of the little box.

Is it possible this is an alarm that came with the Jeep and is just not activated? :\

I'm looking in wonderment. Three contacts on the connector. That would mean ground input/volts into the device and output but no controls on the device. Motion sensor? Hmmmm.

I have to say that it does look after market the way it is mounted. Makes me wonder what the dealer may have added. Any way to tie the wire up out of the way of foot travel? What about a look-see inside the box or is it permanently sealed? What are the colors of the wires? Following the wires into an attachement point if nearby, what color wire do they hook up to?

Well it looks like the connector wire was strapped on the inside of the plate by electrical tape, which has since failed and the wire falls down and increases my chance of knocking it off with my foot. So it is actually both the little box and the wire that catches my foot.

The box is screwed onto the plate, but I should be able to open it up I believe. I will do so on my lunch break here in the next hour and get some more pics. If it is not that important, I would like to reverse it and put it on the backside of the plate and I could add some plastic zip ties to hold the wire in closer. My main concern is just the fact I have no idea what it is and why it is there.

OEM wires aren't usually twisted together like that?
From the very first pic you posted, it looks like a receiver of some kind because of the series of switches on it (like garage door openers have).

Like jk'n said, follow the wires and see where they go, then post your findings.

Look further to the left of it.
Do you see your OBD-II port? Looks sorta like a parallel printer port.
Is this thing connected to it?

I have a 09 X and I noticed that I have the same thing mounted under there too. I have never kicked it and the wires aren't visible. I bought it brand new from the dealership also. I am going to call the guy that sold me the Jeep and see if I can find out anything.

Well, I am taking my lunch now so I will check all the wires and colors. I also know what you are talking about when you mentioned the parallel printer port look alike piece.

I will be back in about an hour.

Okay, well at least I now know it is common on the new 09's. I appreciate you calling the dealer like that.

Ok, spoke with the dealer....turns out that they call that a DRB Plug. If there is anything ever to go wrong with the Jeep or something needs to be tested with the Jeep then they hook a computer up to it there. It will then give a read-out of all the systems.

So flipping it to the back of the plate is not a problem then right? I just have to let whomever is looking for it know when it is.

Is there contacts on the opposite side from where the three pin connector goes or is this some kind of wireless thing? If contacts, then the dealer would need to know where it is relocated to. If wireless, then they just need to come near it to communicate. If that is the case, what won't they think of next!

I think it is wireless because I see no connector. It is just a little box chilling there with little vent looking things (as seen in the very first pic) I am going through the owners manual right now to see if it is mentioned. SO far no luck.

It could be both. After all, information for troubles comes from the car to the equipment at the service facility but sometimes settings have to be set and that implies information going in the opposite direction to the on board computer.
