Did some searching, but haven't seen this one before:
Looks like they didn't quite paint the hood next to or behind the hinge. Anyone else? I hate the idea of having to repaint the hood on a new vehicle, but I don't know that I have much of a choice here if I don't want it to rust.
I have the same issue on my '15 black JKU. All the hinges and very thin paint on doors where it actually looks blotchy. I met with the chrysler rep last month and they have agreed to give me a set of black altitude wheels since i don't want the jeep painted (he stated i would lose the factory warranty). I am trying to get them to just give me the cash value of the altitude wheels instead. The paint doesn't bother me much anymore.
Thankfully, this seems to only be a problem on the hood, so that'd be the only thing they'd need to fix, but still. I imagine a repainted hood will chip like crazy.
Grrr.
Why would the dealer fixing the paint on yours void the warranty?
They say because it would no longer be factory paint and would then be covered by the body shop warranty. Which it doesn't matter to me i don't really want it painted but do want something out of it. lol
I thought so initially, but looking more closely, it appears the hood is sprayed from the front in this area, and the areas immediately next to and behind the hinge are mostly just overspray on primer.
If it's clearcoated, I suppose it's less of an issue. Just want to do everything I can to make it last, and any PM I can do early on seems like it would be time/money well spent.
FWIW the Chrysler rep said it was primer showing through then something about having to use water based products to paint. Mine has clear over it so i'm thinking it's only cosmetic.
yes, well documented lack/thin paint around the door/hood hinges. Supposedly then went to a "new/newer" paint process in 2015, but it di dnot help the issue. My Jeep has the exact condition as the photos from dalcars.
Other than repaint, the dealership really has no other option. I rather keep my factory paint, plus it hasn't bothered me much (yet) since my full doors have been off since may.
Even if they were well painted, after a few years the paint on the hinge will bubble due to galvanic corrosion. Unless you have a '15 or newer, since they started to add a very thin plastic film between the door & hinge.
I've seen this mentioned a few times around here - do we know about when they started doing this? Please say build dates starting before October '14...
I have had my jeep for 2 weeks and noticed I have the exact same issue with my 2015 wrangler. I will be returning to the dealership tomorrow. I have already had the body shop repair a few paint flaws but will see what they say tomorrow.
This is really disappointing. Will the response from the dealer be a hearty "beat it"? I intend to take it by Friday to have them look at it. Or would you suggest I go straight to Jeep customer service?
I would take it back to the dealer. I was able to get them to switch my Silver Sahara rims out for Black Altitude wheels and a $500 check. I did have to deal with the FCA rep though.
I tried taking a photo of the liner between the hinge on the door but it would not come out clearly. It's like a 3M very thin layer of plastic in between
I checked out the 15's last week at our local dealer, and I could clearly see a gasket between the door hinge and body. Couldn't get a good enough look at the hood, but I would imagine (hope) they're doing those, too.
Mine has this around the hinges as well. From what Ive read, it has to do with the different metals being in contact with each other. The doors are steel and hinges are aluminum, I think....anyway, alot of people have this problem, me included, and I am taking mine back to the dealer to see about getting it fixed. There is a corrosion warranty for up to 60K I believe. I asked them about it when I went to get my oil changed but it was on a Saturday and the warranty dept was closed so when I go back, it'll be during the week, but I'm not expecting a problem, especially since the Jeep only has 7500 miles and was bought brand new and this is a common problem.
The weak areas for paint are the hood hinges, door hinges, the dip area by the wipers, the inside windshield pillar (mine is so bad it is clear coated primer)...as much as we pay for these toys you would think they do a more better job..freaking lazy UAW/robots

Actually the entire paint job is pretty sub par, in my opinion, at least on the Jeep I got. Orange peel is pretty bad. Any decent paint/body shop would be embarrassed to do a job like that for a customer. I've certainly seen much cheaper vehicles with much better paint jobs applied to them.
But on the other hand, I guess they just figure that most Jeep owners aren't going to give a flip about an award winning paint job anyway, so why bother going overboard on quality in an area where it isn't going to be a selling point to the majority of their customer base? Even in my own case, I didn't even look closely at the paint job before I forked over my money. And even if I had, I doubt it would have killed the sale.
Both sides of my jeep show a lot of orange peel. Not sure if the average customer would even notice and if they did, they might think it's a special textured paint application! :atomic:
Is the general consensuses to live with it. I don't really want the dealer to paint the whole hood. Can't they just remove the hinges and paint the area underneath only? Still waiting to have dealership look at it next week.
The sides of mine are actually pretty good, but the hood has enough orange peel that I couldn't tell if the hailstorm we had a few weeks ago did any damage. Figured if it did, I sure couldn't see it.
Both door and good hinges have what looks like foil tape applied to the backs of them. I assume this is to prevent corrosion from the two dissimilar metals.
stopped by a local dealer today. He took pics and is supposed to submit them. I took a few as well and emailed them to him. Used my Nikon DSL with a Macro lens so you can see it really well. Basically every hinge I have is like this to a varying degree. Am I making a big deal over this? Will this rust? Can this be repainted or should I haggle for something else? I wouldn't mind the dealer putting in power windows for me!
Mine look the same, missing paint all around the edges, also the recessed torx bolt heads are missing paint.
Personally, for now, I would not want the dealer repainting my jeep doors due to this... the clear coat "should" be there to protect a bit more....
I would haggle for some other compensation...
