MOAB TRIP!! RK RIPP Trail Ride Video Pics

If you followed the RIPP Prototype Pentastar SuperCharger Thread, you know we took betty cross country to wheel with RIPP and RK in Moab.

This is RK's Behind the Rocks Ride.

It was a crazy run. We took the truck from RIPP untested and slightly incomplete (final tune not done) and ran that supercharger continuously for about 29 hours. Not Kidding, that SC spun for that long continuously with the exception of stopping for gas, and one breakfast.

here was the pot of gold we were looking for at the end of the rainbow. Here's what I got on the trail ride with RIPP and RK. Im editing the video right now. I've got hours of footage, so im going to roll it out as I edit it.

First Hill

Heres the first clip,

Im driving, so my brother Pete is holding the camera. He is more concerned about watching me after I scare everyone stalling out in my first attempt.

Keep in mind. Northeast Pros are MOAB rookies. Moab is like nothing you've seen until you get there.

Also, i have the smallest tires in the STATE. duratrac 34s. I was one of two guys on this trail ride that had a manual trans.

Here's how it turns out. Its two clips of the same thing. first from outside the truck, and then from the hood cam. Enjoy!

One thing that sticks out is it does not look like you aired down much.
funny how things look way steeper from the driver's seat . I know it works that way for me anyway.

Im down to about 13 psi.

the video and pics make things that are steep in real life look flat on cam. Drives me nuts. Ive got a lot coming.

for sure you never get the real seat of the pants from a video.

I know what you mean about hills and obstacles looking less impressive on video than in real life. I've climbed some of those at URE before and the videos just didn't look that great.

Wow! That looks like a lot of fun! A bit nerve racking I'd imagine. Haha! That looks awesome though. Even in the video, you can still see the degree of difficulty. Good stuff!

The Moab rocks nearly demand a 4:1 transfer case, it makes all the difference in the world.

By the way, next time you kill it on the rocks try to not let it roll back like that. You don't have to even push the clutch in to restart it, just let up on the brake so it is barely holding you in place and hit the key.

I cant explain the pressure of the situation. I stalled so I had to start the truck again. The clutch in that spot was a huge mistake. I had Jeremy from RK at the top of the hill spotting, surrounded by they guys who make all the stuff on my truck in a situation that I'd never been in before. (moab is nothing like the north east) My nerves were shot from the last 30 hours of driving out.

The part that haunts me about it is, what would have happened if someone was anxious behind me? I could have rolled into another truck.

So. lesson learned. My confidence took a beating there. I steadily climbed back in the saddle over the rest of the day, but clearly I was the slowest truck on the ride.

4:1 transfer case- big discussion had over and over out there. Jeremy from RK's Rig was a sport built into his crawling machine. I dont know if he changed the transfer case. But people out there would say "crawlers are built, not bought". Had I had the chance to build betty again, would I start with a sport? 2:7 transfer case? Probably not. I was happy to have the 4:1. how expensive is changing a transfer case? I have no idea.

this is situational. I got 13 MPG before the supercharger. Once I got the truck back, we loaded it with crap and drove to moab.

The truck read 17 mpg on the way out. (85mph the whole way. Racing everyone who read (RIPP) on the side of the truck) My math at the fuel pump still came out to 13 mpg. Now keep in mind my 13 mpg before adding the SC was unloaded. We added at least 1400 llbs of stuff and humans above normal for that trip. And drove FAST.

So under those conditions to still get 13 mpg is pretty good. Also my truck never cruised at 85mph. So heavier than normal, going way faster than normal and the mpg was the same.

Once I get it back and can get the stuff out and drive it normally, I'm hoping to be over 16mpg around town.

Ill let you guys know when I get through another tank of gas in NJ.
