Mods you regret

I have been in the waiting room for a few weeks now. In the meantime I have read about more interesting, useful, fun, and attractive mods than I can hope to do before I die. So, I thought it might be helpful for those of us just entering into the fun to read about the mods you wish you had skipped.

I don't want to hear what you think looks bad on other Jeeps.

I don't want to know why someone else bought the wrong ____ and should have bought______.

I'd like to hear about your experience. Looking back, what was a waste of your time? Your energy? Your money?

Mods I regret?

On my 07 JKR; cold air induction, power chip and exhaust.

I think I spent about 1k for all of it and got nothing but a barking dog with no teeth.

Similar to Boothill but I only did a cold air intake. It changed the tone of the engine a little (barely noticeable) and gave me a reusable air filter, but other than that it's worthless. ~$200 of uselessness. I should have done a little research before I bought it. Stupid impulse buy.

Rugged ridge grab handles. They are garbage.

buying cheap seat covers... they only lasted 8 months then started falling apart! They have since been replaced with a set of trek armors

Wasted my time and money on 35's and wheel spacers. Should have skipped 'em and gone straight to 37s.

I am so tempted to buy an AFE intake but everyone seems to hate them on here.. They really don't change the tone of the engine much? I realize you're not going to get power from it, I have a bit of a tuning background in my previous car so on this heavy ass truck I would hope people don't expect much!

Bought Body Armor rock rails from amazon, waited a few weeks to install then noticed rust on the joints two days after I installed.

This!

I have learned that over the past 20 years of car/truck/motorcycle/jeep ownership.

I'm better at picking a perfect spot with my sports cars. There is a sweet spot, my Z06 for example has headwork and exhaust and I would not change a thing.

I would be interested in your opinions where this spot is on the Jeep spectrum. I have a JKU 10AE and can't decide on: stock or 2.5 with 35's or 3.5 with 37's.

I don't hate any of my mods so far but don't really find my self using the dead pedal all that much (MORE brand). It is a little high and at the wrong angle for my foot.

Everything where I started off with: well for now I'll just....
i'll just lift 2.5"
i'll just do 35s
i'll just lock one axle
etc....

that translates to paying twice....

Lol it's good to see jokes like that are cross platform from cars to trucks.. BTW, do you call the Wrangler a truck, or an SUV? I'm sure someone is going to come to my doorstep and kick my ass now but I never distinguish SUVs I just called everything not a car a truck.. Unless it was a van of course!

Thanks guys, good stuff.

I think it is interesting that two of the themes seemed to conflict. One opinion was not to go too extreme and another was not to settle for half steps. If you combine the two ideas, you can really see the value of hearing from a group of people on their views of where that sweet spot is, so you can hit it on the first try.

Keep them coming. Any cheap or easy mods that turned out to cause problems and end up neither cheap nor easy?

Clean up the rust with a wire brush, then just spray some rustoleum bed liner into a container and hit those spots with a paintbrush. The repair will fade right into the background and you'll never even know it's there. I touch up our rails and bumpers that way any time I see a ding.

None of the above! A jeep is just a JEEP!

I'm sure you already know this, but the dead pedal is adjustable, the first time I installed it I hated it, but after playing with it a few minutes, it's been great, at least for me, but I'm sure it depends on a lot of things.

As far as Mods I regret, I'm not sure I have any, oh no wait, I guess it would be that I went with the dealer installed 430N, I would never do that again, should have gotten an after market Nav.

My worst mod was that I got "Beep Beep Ima Jeep" tattood on my left forearm in Olde English. I though it would be cool when I hung my arm out the window...but it wasn't as cool as I'd hoped. Got it taken off with a Laser....

After almost two years with 2.5" I find myself more often wishing that I had gone 3.5" or even 4". I don't regret the 315s. 35" +/- is a good tire size for my needs. But, a little more lift would be nice. With all of that being said, the one piece of advice that I feel is most valuable to those considering mods: Be PATIENT!!! Too often there is the tendency to hurry up and start the mods! When you're considering a mod, do LOTS of research! Also ask yourself the important questions: What are my NEEDS? (What type of off road use (if any) will I be doing? Do I want FUNCTION? Or am I just going for a particular LOOK (Mall Crawler)? Either is fine (It is YOUR rig). Don't short cut! If the particular mod that you want is out of your price range, WAIT!!! Save your money until you can get what you want. If this means buying a piece at a time, so be it! This will actually save you money by not buying twice. Whatever you decide to do, don't hesitate to ask questions here on the forum. Sure, you will get the wise guys who can't resist making a smart comment. But, as you weed through those, you will get enough info from the people that can offer good solid advice, with experience and knowledge to back up what they're telling you. Whatever you decide, don't forget to post pics!

This.

I run 35s with a 2 1/2" lift and have torn off rear fender twice from maxing rear axle up travel. Fenders snap back on but I'm limited off road until I get some flat fenders.

You could just trim the stock fenders. That's what I did.

My guess would be that you will regret anything you get that is not in line with your goals. Whether you are aware of your goals or not.

I would say plam ahead!!
If you have a specific goal in mind and thoroughly research the mods on your list, you can't go wrong.

I've been hitting it with some rustoleum I had around the garage. More I brush off, the more I notice it was all rusted before the finish was applied.

Not happy at all considering what I paid for them. I could understand if I bought them used but amazon listed them as new. I'm ok with beating up equipment as they are made to take a beating. When I buy them new and they are already trashed I get mad.

I remember my first dent and I was like: "I did that!!". I just feel ripped off.
