$ Money Talks- 2012 Negotiations $

Are you guys buying 2012's and utilizing the TL discount all paying the $800 'destination fee'? Is this a 'required' component or some negotiable 'fluff' built in to the price??

The destination charge is charged to the dealer by the manufacture to cover the cost of transporting the vehicle from the assembly plant to the dealer. They try to average the cost so that it balances out. Obviously it will cost more to transport a Jeep to California than to Oklahoma for instance. It is the actual cost to the dealer for shipping.

After negotiating 1 or 2 percent below invoice I doubt you will be getting them to discount it, as there is no markup on destination charges.

FWIW, BMW Motorcycles are shipped from Berlin for a destination charge of $495. Doesn't matter if its a G650 or a K1600GTL, same price.

Another poster said he bought his for "employee pricing", that's pretty cheap. People need to know, TL discount is the easy discount, definitely not the best. What's your time and aggravation worth?? Employee price is ~4% under invoice...

The destination charge is not negotiable. You'd be better off trying to get more money taken off the cost, but there isn't much margin on a Wrangler, especially on the low end of the model lineup.

Employee pricing isn't that big a deal. 4% under invoice sounds about right. I got preferred pricing on mine and the employee pricing listed right below it on the order form was less than $1000 under my price, but I still asked about getting it and even offered to sweep up the floor so I could be an employee. They were not amused.

Haha, I'd sweep the floor for the 4% too...

I got 2% below. More than fair IMO. I don't mind someone making a reasonable profit.

Using numbers on a jeep I will build, pricing looks like this:

Sticker: 39255
Invoice: 36767
1% below invoice aka Friends and Family: 36399
2% below invoice: 36031
5% below invoice aka employee pricing: 34930

A dealer in my town was doing 2% below on pre-orders, so I would never pay more than that...

You're right ... but, you likely could've gotten $500 plus the 1% of Tread Lightly.

T

edit: of course, you may still be able to

2% below is better than $500 below

I did the same thing I do on every car for the past 20 years. Contact 3 dealers and tell them exactly what I want. And be up front and let them know I am letting 2 other dealers bid on the same thing. No trade's involved. Best deal gets the sale.. period.
I did the same thing on the 2012 Rubi unlimited and I got one bid ar 1.5% below invoice,, one at 2% and the winner quoted 2.5% below. That dealer is 30 min. away from my house so I was pretty happy with that.
I'm in the building supply biz and have to bid on jobs every day. Just seems like the natural thing to do for me.
I told the dealer I would be in Saturday to firm up the deal.
The tread lightly without a doubt would make dealing on a car a lot less stressful even without doing it the way I did. I simply have had to many poor experiences going back and forth with numbers. Just makes me mad now

I sold cars for about two years. I loved customers like you. Occasionally hated as well ha. But I despised negotiating. Tell me what you want, or I'll tell you what I'm willing to do. If works out great, if not appreciate chance for your business. Maybe next time.

I believed in volume sales. I could get enough customers happy to pay full sticker to keep managers happy. But like Sam Walton once said "a little off a lot is still a lot"

Especially at my dealership where I got paid in tiers. So selling 10 cars was worth 3G as much as selling 6.

I contacted several dealers too but this specific one is the best (he offered to allow me to re-order a different Rubicon in case I'm not happy with the 4.10 gears so I felt very comfortable dealing with him)

This was my plan as well, but two of the three dealers in town were asses right out of the chute. I ended up taking my 1% preferred price and being perfectly happy with that. The dealer is there to make money, and I don't mind them making a little bit on the deal especially when they put time in to make me happy. I'm sure it's just a show, but it was a good one.

It also depends on who exactly you are dealing with. The bid approach usually works best when sealing with the fleet manager. There may also be an internet sales manager.

I bought my 2011 sahara a few weeks ago. I contacted 7 different dealers and told them what I wanted. The one dealer said 2% under dealer invoice no problem and e-mailed me a written transcript of a chat on autotrader. The dealer was about 2 hours away from me but they had what I wanted. After I was scheduling a test drive to come look at the vehicle the price was suddenly wrong and went up by $1200...needless to say I was pissed. So after looking for a Sahara in mango with leather and the gears I wanted there were no others to be found. I went to a local dealer about 40 minutes away to look at a mango tango rubicon that they said was $4500 sticker...we get there, drive it, and suddenly they can't do the $4500 but only $3000 off (b/c we weren't financing at 2%)...to make a long story shorter we got the original Sahara we wanted from another dealer that did a dealer trade with them for a better price than originally quoted. I hate car shopping.

From what the GM said at my dealership the ar (TL) number gives a more than 2% discount! He said most dealers only give the 1% because that is whats required! But the dealership is reimbursed the full 2.##%

O and no doc fee that's just extra bullcrap

Thank goodness my GM passed all the savings on to me but I'm sure he doesn't do that for everyone.

So moral of the story is if up go to your dealer and immediately say I have an AR number and that's the price you want then You have probably did not get the best deal ... And in some cases you could be talking close to a 1000 bucks! IMO!

Good Luck!

That was my intent, but when you can't even get past the receptionist without a bunchof crap I suspect there isn't much hope for anyone else at the dealership.

I seriously doubt you are going to get $1000 under the TL price on any Wrangler. That's going to be cheaper than employee pricing on most of them.

I may get EP pricing on a Wrangler, but don't have the control number yet and I'll believe it when I see it... I did use one of these to buy my 2004 Rubicon nearly 7 years ago.

This time around, I definitely have a 1% suppliers discount (control # generated), a 1% friends discount (control #generated), and a TL discount available. I would think I would quality for any loyalty discounts, as I bought my 2004 TJ from the same dealer as my wife's original 2007 Caravan. I am uncertain as to whether or not I will be trading my TJ in or selling it private, though - I don't want to be low-balled by a dealer who gives me money on the new side and takes it in what is likely to be a desirable trade for the used lot or auction.

I fully expect 2% under invoice, and I'm willing to drive as much as 100 miles if my local dealers pull any stunts. What are the chances of combining control numbers to get 3%? Is there any confirmation of a loyalty program? I know the dealers are trying to move the 2011 inventory badly right now, so I may wait a few months to see what offers pop up on the 2012s when they go all-out in September/October. Any insight is much appreciated.
