Every single time someone died in an Acura MDX it was a single vehicle roll over.

i think its because we are good drivers, and jeeps have roll bars and were big, so we do more damage to other cars then to us. i think

The Pontiac Aztek certainly isn't the prettiest car GM ever put out. And they had a hard time selling them.

However, not including aesthetics, if you look at the current explosion of cross-over type vehicles that try to do it all, I would have to say that the Aztek was ahead of it's time. It's looks (at least for the later models) do fit in fairly well with current designs.

To bad it was ugly as sin.

When we started thinking about trading in my TJ, I was a bit worried about the insurance. I was already used to being spoiled by the low rate on the TJ, so I knew I'd see an increase just because it was a newer vehicle. Keeping the same coverage, the insurance went up $4 a month!!

All I can figure is the new airbag system (mine has the side airbags too) and the new traction control features, and antilock brakes, etc make the newer JKU safer than my TJ.

I also would think the driver makes a difference too. As Jeep owners in general don't make as many claims. We hit a deer and look at the bent in the fender (think TJ) as an excuse to upgrade to flatties and beefier control arms and suspension. Dent the rear tub corner, time for armored corner protection and flush tail lights. We don't run to the insurance company to get it fixed to stock spec.

Also, for those of us, myself included, that have bought newer Jeeps, we 'grew up' driving some very simple vehicles. As mentioned above, my 2005 TJ, didn't have anti-lock brakes, traction control, heated mirrors, TPMS, or steering wheel controls (other then cruise). I enjoyed not having so much technology in my Jeep, I thrived on knowing there wasn't something to break. I now also enjoy having the top off and not being blinded at all because of the auto dimming rear view mirror. I am glad I learned to drive in bad weather with the TJ, I feel a bit bad my son may drive most of his life not knowing how to really drive without all the computer brains correcting tire speed and braking for you.

I can attest to how well Wranglers tend to hold up in a wreck. On my old TJ at least.

Had a lady take a curve too tight while I was waiting to pull out of the gate from the AF base in England. She hit the front of my TJ on the Driver's side. That TJ's front bumper ripped a hole down the side of her car from front to back, and flung her rear bumper into a playground across the street. The only damage to my TJ was a busted fender flair and a bent corner on my bumper. Her car was totaled.

My passenger and I duct taped my fender flare back together, smacked the bumper with a sledge hammer a few times to get it away from the tire and continued to the BBQ we were going to. The cops thought it was hilarious when we pulled out the duct tape.

This is why I always carry a roll of duct tape with me. You never when your going to need it, and there really isn't anything that can't be fixed with enough duct tape


In response to the OP.. Interesting statistics! It's nice to know we all drive some of the safest vehicles on the road. I know when I'm in my Jeep, I don't accerlerate hard, I never make the speed limit unless its under 55, and overall I just drive more cautious than I do in my car. I know I'm not the only person that drives my Jeep this way, and I'm sure this plays a big part in keeping the death rates down in Jeeps.

Insurance

Came out of a 2008 Toyota Double Cab 4 wheel drive into a 2012 jku and my insurance actually went down several bucks. I heard that rates also have to do with parts availability as well.

I'd like to point out that the chart is deaths per million registered vehicle years. Which means for every million JKs registered for a full year, around 17 people died in them. A zero doesn't mean no one died, it likely means less than .5 people died per million vehicles. Otherwise we'd be inundated with NOBODY EVER DIES IN OUR CAR advertisements.

The interesting question for Jeeps is those statistics lump TJs and JKs together (model years 2005-2008). What will figures for JKs only look like?

I agree. I rarely make use of the extra juice in the Pentastar because I'm just not in a hurry to get where I'm going ...

And I sit up higher in my wrangler, which enables me to see past the cars ahead of me and anticipate when I might need to stop. And speaking about stopping, I really appreciate the engine braking in my wrangler that I think makes it a safer vehicle to drive on bad roads.

(just one last comment: I also wouldn't be caught dead in an Aztec)

Interesting that the 17 Wrangler deaths are all shown as single-vehicle and no rollover. This report of Wrangler injuries and deaths occurring from 2006-2011 shows that most of the incidents involved a rollover.

Did anyone else realize that that chart only accounts for driver deaths & not passenger deaths. At least that's what I assume since it specifically says "drivers".

Wow! This is reassuring I also expected my ins. to increase, going from a 2005 Grand Cherokee to a 2011 JKU, and to my surprise it decreased right at $40 per month!!

What's so hilarious? You had the only two tools needed to fix anything. Duct tape, and a hammer.

Similar situation here... Going from a Subaru WRX STI that is literally limited only by air drag at 172 mph. I got it up to about 160 at which point I think I saw an angel that said "are you stupid or something?" My insurance at 34 years old is not too bad... I think like 1000 a year comprehensive. If a car that teenagers like to wreck on a daily basis costs me that much I really hope the Jeep is cheaper!
