I noticed a slight drop, but it may be due to the fact I haven't changed the speedo gear yet. Moreover, I noticed a slight drop in pickup when taking off at stop lights and whatnot. Regearing will set both issues back to normal. Might not be worth it for just 32" tires though...33" or higher would be more appropriate.
A programmer ($150)will set your speedo back to stock, a regear will involve front & rear gearing (usually around $1400)
Do you know what gearing you currently have? The current gearing & year (motor) of your vehicle will help determine what, if any, gearing you want/need.
2014 JKU with 3.6l engine. I have the 3.21 rear. I ran a calculator based on new tire size it it came back with 3.42 after the larger tires are installed.
Larger tires will decrease your ratio. Depending on your new tire size you'll be a 3.00 or less. The 3.6 has good pep, but you'll likely want to regear (eventually.)
I have 4.10 gearing, but with the increase in tire size it's a 3.5? ratio. I'm not happy with it, mainly because of towing, but even as a DD I want higher. I'll be regearing soon.
The calculator must mean I would need a 3.4 gear to be the same as current setup. I really am not going crazy, just31" maybe 32". I've read some on here going with 35's and say it's bearable so hoping if I stay very conservative, I can avoid regearing and have this jeep still perform as a daily driver. Thank you for the feedback. I will search for others who have done what I'm looking to do to get their opinions.
You'll be fine going to a 255/75/17" tire. That's what's on 90% of new wranglers anyway. You absolutely won't need to regear anything (other than reset your speedo)
P.S. (Psychologically Sucks) that's the effect being in love with my current MPG avg (22.5) I want to lift, re-gear and go 35's but as a DD and 75 miles per/day - it is a P.S. issue. IF gas drops below $3 a gallon another "P" effect will kick in and we will wish we owned stock in lift/regear/tire shops because lots of things in America will pick up.
IF it ever went below $2 again - there would be no more recession or unemployment #'s above 5%.
Very few people talk about let alone acknowlege the "P" effect of energy costs. They DRIVE everything (pun intended)
