Yea, this is VERY odd and would freak me out as well.....
Are you heavy on the pedal? Stuck in traffic? idling quite often?

No change in mpg...yet...

JKU Sahara 6spd with 3.73 and stock 32" rubber. Prior to any mods I was averaging 20 or 21 mpg. Note: I do not drive it like I stole it! As you can see from my signature below, I've definitely added a little extra weight. I'm still running the stock 32" tires and I've experienced no appreciable change in my fuel mileage as I'm still averaging 20 and yes I do the math (the computer is a little generous in its' calculations). My long term goal is 35's by summer of 2014 at which time I have no doubt my numbers will change.

2013 JKU Oscar Mike Edition - came with 285's (32") & 3.73 gears
Stock Mileage without any lift - hwy 19.2, City 18
2" Lift - no difference
305/65/R17 Mud Tires - hwy 18.2, City 16.8

Not really, never, and occasionally but not so significantly.

What i can say is that its been consistent for over a year. My checklist of things to have verified includes the O2 sensor, fuel injectors, air mass meter. Air filter is new. Had my used oil analyzed and no overt signs of engine wear. If i find out what's wrong I'll be sure to post what I've learned here.

Stock- 21 MPG. Once or twice.
New Tires 305/70/17- around 18 MPG.
New Gears/4.56s, bumper armor skids etc.- 15-16 MPG freeway. (17 If I can drive 65- which I can't). Around 13-14 MPG city. Worthy every penny I lose at the pump.

16 MPG on the above is amazing and this is with 3.73 gears

That's a question that I've been tossing around in my head Initially I'm going to try with the 3.73s. But, eventually I'll probably change to 4.56 and remedy my open differentials with a limited slip in the rear and a locker up front Unfortunately, doing things on a budget precludes my doing all mods at one time

2009 JKU Rubicon 4.10 gears

Stock 32s with hardtop and White Knuckle rock sliders 16 to 18mpg.

33s with 2.5 inch lift 14 to 15 mpg.

It also depends on how you are going to use your jeep..If you dont plan on climbing hills, rock etc. you can go with light weight bumper and small tires and get 18+ mileage. If you plan on 33's+ and plan on rock or hill climbing, I would suggest placing as much weight on the front end as possible to keep the front end from popping up.

If you use your jeep like me..gas mileage is not even considered.

I had not thought about weight on the front bumper for climbing. (aware of it but hadn't thought about it in this context). The other side of the coin is highway driving, coming down over obstacles and braking. Heavy weight on the nose induces more understeer and will cause more diving without stiffer suspension.

I have not completed my first year of owning this 2012 Rubicon and we have over 15,000 miles on it. While we have been on some trails and been on slick rock in Moab, most of those miles are not offroad. So, I take your point - it does depend what we use the vehicle for. And part of the equation is what impact do bigger wheels, tires and lift have on mpg. It's only part of the decision making - but it's why I started asking. I could do more highway miles in our other vehicle and make the Jeep more off road worthy (I like lifted Jeeps with 35s) - but it might be smarter to leave some of the narlier obstacles alone and build a vehicle that will take me on the mining trails in CO, get me out if the odd jam and still get good gas mileage. So looking for others:

The light bar is obviously visible, but it's not an obstruction to your view. Coupled with the LEDs on the A-pillars, it's a pretty ridiculous combo

Well - some folks felt obliged to make those Prius and other like remarks despite my plea in the OP. It would have been OK if there had been something original in there but the same sorry comments turned up in all my searches on this subject Oy vey.

Those of you like me looking for useful info - here is a summary of the most helpful posts. You can get more detail by going back and reading the posts themselves (people posted about gears and interim mods etc) - the post numbers are in the column on the left. I would have edited post number 1 with this table so you could use it to navigate past the bogus stuff but that option has expired so sorry you had to read this far. Thanks to everyone who provided some useful data!
