My 15" Duratrac 33X12.5X15 review

Well, I have ran my Duratrac's for 10 months now and have been through all the seasons pretty much so I have a pretty good feel for these tires now. So here is my review of the "Combo" that went wild last year. Now I went with the MB Chaos 5 15X8 but it's not much different then the MB72 combo in weight/bs/and size, I got caught up with the combo last year especially over the weight issues and snow rating so ended up getting them as a replacement to my 17's with Goodyear MT/R with Kevlar 285/70/17's

Review:

As far as trail running, the tire worked very well on the trails as long as the trail was dry but when it was muddy, it was a whole different story. Dry they had great traction and did real well but in mud it is like ice skating. They can't go up any hill with any decent incline and slides all over the place coming down hill in muddy trails.

As far as snow, it did great this winter in powder. We had 6" to 8" snow with about 4" on the road. Great traction and took some back roads quiet well. But on the other hand, we had some wet snow a couple weeks ago and these tire did horrible. The same hill I took in the deeper powder snow, I barely made up in 2" wet snow. I was sliding all over the place.

As far as pavement. They ride with comfort and little noise. They take corners very good on dry pavement and hold the road great in dry conditions. On the other hand, on wet pavement, to me they didn't far any better then my MT's were in certain condition, they did loss a little traction in sharp turns.

Now another issue was balancing. Not that it isn't uncommon on 15" wheels and large tires, they were hard to balance. They had to be Road Force Balanced. Using a regular balance they vibrated at around 65 mph. Not enough to be dangerous but enough to be annoying. Also because the 15's have to have such a small backspacing the 12.5" tires stick past the fenders about 2.25" and throw mud all over the side of the Jeep.

Score:

Dry Trail: B+
Wet Trail (mud): D
Powder Snow: A
Wet Snow: D
Dry Road: A
Wet Road: B
Comfort: A
Tread life: B+

Overall: B


Conclusion: I'm am going back to the MT/R's very soon. I guess that I shouldn't write this review since I will be selling these soon, lol.

I sort of feel bad about the mud rating since they are AT's and not MT's but expected a little more. On one of my last runs on the trail it just rained hard the night before. I tried the hill three times, first with in 4hi, then 4lo and lockers twice and couldn't make it up the hill and really expected it to go up. Nearly slid off the trail backing up and it wasn't a extreme hill though a little steep. I made it up the week before when dry with ease.

Good review. But I haven't had any of the issues with mud or snow that have been stated. Mine have cleaned out well in both an I haven't even had to use 4wd with either.

I would disagree with the mud rating. I mad it through sloppy mud several times with these tires when other people got stuck in the same place. They're at's not mt's but they actually did better than I thought they would.

It gets tough to provide a universal rating in many of these conditions due to differences in driving style. I do feel running a "fat" tire will often create some issues in the wet slushy stuff... for a non mud tire I think they do pretty well...if the tread voids are larger they will do better but be noisier and less optimal for a DD.

I agree with every aspect of his review.. except mud performance. I had these tires in very gooey and slick mud and they did just as well as any MT I ever used. In fact, I went up a muddy hill that was covered in 3 inches of snow and they still dug and pulled me right up. I was VERY happy with mud performance.

Has anyone tried airing down for mud and/or wet snow? A buddy and I have these same tires (17" rim) and ran snow/ice/powder and did pretty well. If we had aired down I bet it would have been MUCH better, but we didn't have a compressor

I went to purchase my Duratracs in 15" and they said they would not install them. They would sell them to me but not install. The load rating on a 15" is not high enough. The load rating on the 2 door JK sport S is 113, the load rating on a 15" 33 is 108. I had to go up to 16" 285 with the load rating at 126. The manager even talked to Discount tire direct and they said the same thing. The computer will throw up a red flag if you go to buy the 33" in 15's.

Yes, it is true that a LT "C" rated tire has a lower capacity than a "P" rated tire. However, DTD never asked me a single question when I bought mine. And the load rating in lbs. that is stamped on the tires is more than enough for a Jeep Wrangler.

I ran mine at 30 lbs and they were not the best similar to the ops. I am now running 28 and the contact is perfect and I was able to make it through spots I couldn't prior with the higher psi. I wasn't getting any bite from the edges of the tire.

I love my 33" duratracs with 15" level 8's. They've done everything I've wanted them to do. I live in south Florida and all there is to play in down here is mud.. lol so they work fine.

I have been very happy with my combo.Couldnt ask for better all around tire. They are the best tires I have ever ran in the snow period.Mud they do really well, and wet roads they seem to be better than any other tire I have used on a 4x4 as well. Only gripe I have a slight vib at speed and they have been balanced and rotated twice now and still have slight vib. I may go to the MTR or even go back to my old faithful Swamper TSX next time.

I made it 100 yards before getting stuck the last 20 feet. The guy in front of me had 35" duratracs and he made it all the way through. I made the mistake of letting off the gas for a sec. Right after I got stuck a 2 door rubicon with 35" MTs got stuck 50 feet behind me. I have had zero issues with my duratracs. If I lived in an area when my rig was mainly used offroad, I would have mud terrains but if your rig is hitting mostly tarmac, I think they are fantastic.

My rating would be

Dry trail A
Dry Tarmac A
Wet tail/mud B-C (depending on depth and consistency)
Wet tarmac A
Snow Tarmac A
Snow Trail A-B (depending on depth and moisture content)
Comfort A
Durability A

I have to agree with the general sentiments here that there is something wrong with your tires. I've been running duratracs on my TJ for 4 years and they they perform great in mud and wet pavement. Living in Wisconsin, we get plenty of snow of all kinds and they always perform including ice. I also suspect that whoever mentioned tire pressure is on to something. Over inflate these and they just won't work as well. They need full tread contact to be at their best. Switching to duratracs will be my very first mod on my new 10th anniversary rubicon.

I run my duratracs at 26 psi and my MTRS around 24. Offroad they are at 12 and 9 respectively. I can't decide which tire I like more. MTR seems better in mud and rock and is obviously tougher/harder, but the Dura's are stickier on the rocks and conform better when aired down because of how thin they are. They aren't good in mud but aren't bad. They are much better than the MTRs in snow. You can check out some of my youtube videos if you want evidence of the Duratracs traction. I'm not going to post my junk all over the forum

If your not airing down your tires offroad, you're honestly not giving them a fair shot to prove themselves. Some tires come alive below 10 psi.

What a load of crap... My stripped JKU came with the 225/75-16 Wrangler ST 'mail jeep' tires that have a load index of 104. (1984 lbs per tire) The 33x12.50-15 Duratrac is rated at 108 (2205 lbs per tire). Maybe the extra weight of the power windows requires the extra load rating?

I've got over 10k on mine so far, and will probably get another set. Good traction in most conditions, and they seem to be wearing well. I run 'em at 28psi.

The only really weak point of the duratracs that I came across is wet solid rock. They tend to slip off, but I also didn't air down, so it may have been operator error.

Any tire is going to be slippery one wet rock. My mtrs are bad on wet rock too. I know what you mean though.
