If it was me, I'd turn the license plate hold upside down, that way it wouldn't be in the way if you winch from a mud hole or something, also, if you have a good hinge on it, it might be able to "lay" on the bumper. Just a thought.

Just using a small bungee cord for now.
You could try a woodworking shop and get a locking hinge like ones used on hope chests to lock it open, kinda like this one. I'm sure you could modify it to fit your need, just an idea.

That is nice !!!! Wish I had the ability to do that myself but would need to take it in somewhere to have it done. I do like the hidden part though.

I really don't know for sure. If you look at the pictures in posts #18 & 21, you can see there isn't a lot of room left between the winch and the frame cross brace.

I have seen it mentioned that if you cut the cross brace off, you can mount the winch upright instead of turning it upside down.

For the record, it was a blast to do this install, and it was a great learning experience. However, I am planning on buying a good off road bumper with a built in winch mount. I think it will be more user friendly. Although this was a lot cheaper option in the mean time.

You've used it by now, or just function tested it?

I really like the way it's tucked out o'sight.

2nd thoughts/changes/revisions?

You did nice work. I hate to be the bad guy, but that's going to be difficult to use when the wire doesn't wind on correctly (and wraps over itself, which it will).

That has crossed my mind, and yes, it is a pain to get at the winch in order to sort out any problems.

I actually needed to use it. It worked great, once I sorted out some issues with it.
The crossbar on the frame took a pretty good hit from a rock. It bent up just a bit, but it was enough to interfere with the function of the clutch lever on the winch.

Like 3JKs noted, it is difficult to get at the winch if there are any problems. I have seen where other Jeepers have cut off the crossbar on the frame under the front bumper. This makes it possible to mount the winch plate under the frame rails so the winch is upright, yet still tucked into the front bumper. You will have much better access to the winch. However, I think Jeep put that crossbar there to protect the steering linkages.

Thanks to all of you for the kudos.
