My first off road Wrangler!

I am planning my first off road vehicle.
Either a 2011 Rubicon or the Sport model.

The Rubicon has the lockers and sway bar disconnect
making it the ultimate off road machine.

My concern is how important are these features
and will the Sport model perform well enough
without these features and still be a capable
off road vehicle.

I also see this option available on the Sport model
'Trac-Lok Limited Slip Rear Differential'
Is this something I should consider?

What type of off road driving are you considering?

That's a good question.

Probably nothing to technical at first but who knows.

I might just get hooked and want it all.

I only live an hour from the Rubicon Trail up in Tahoe so that is
always an option if I get brave enough.

The stock Sport is already very capable as an off road vehicle. It really depends on what you'll be doing and how fast you'll want to be doing it.

If you're going to be doing a lot of intense mountain goat stuff right away, the Rubicon might be the way to go. But if it's mostly trails and some light climbing at first, the Sport is a good option. You can always upgrade your Sport on an as-needed basis.

You're a lucky bastard to live so close to that! I would definitely go with the Rubicon. I wouldn't even think twice about it since you have great offroading trails nearby.

I have a sport with no lift and and stock 32" tires and it does fine in moderate offroad conditions and snow packed trails. I do know that if I was that close to having some real offroad trails that were easily accessable and legal I would want to try them out and get the most out of my Jeep . If you can afford the Rubicon than do it and put a couple grand in some other accesories and you will have a great machine. I think the Transfer case and lockers are the biggest things that you get with the rubi over the other models. Discos arent a big deal to install and to me it seems that once that motor fails or gets damaged you will wish you didnt have it. Mabey I'm wrong in that comment but I work in the parts business and I imagine thats a expensive thing and its faliure prone due to its location, mabey not??

It's the social value/e-lockers/ and that phenominal NV241 OR Rock-Trac -xfer case, that I've thanked the jeep god for __
