Question My kingdom for an auto JKU Sport with 3.73!!

Well, like most people I thought ordering a '12 JKU Sport with Auto and Tow would give me a 3.73 rear end, but instead a 3.21 will be coming in next week. My dealer ordered another one, but I'm a little upset with them b/c I asked them several times to change the order to 3.73 and they didn't.

Anyways, they ordered me a new Jeep with 3.73, but now the clock starts over again I'll be waiting 6-8 weeks.

I need the 3.73 for towing, and as I read the fleet manual (pdf), it appears that max towing is 2000 lb for those with 3.21 and 3500 lb for 3.73 (I extrapolated this out by reading the tow package increases the towing limit, and includes the 3.73, which of course it does not! )

Anyone know of a 3.73 auto coming in with dual tops and limited slip rear end? I don't need many more options than that. I checked all the sites I could think of within 300 miles, and found nothing. At this stage I don't want to wait and location doesn't matter...

Thanks for the advice guys!!

I have that gearing on my 08 JKSahara along with LSD. From the tons of reading I did, it was my impression auto comes with 3.73, but perhaps that has changed???.

I've preferred 3.73 diffs for most rigs over the last 30 years, as they fit my need very well.

I'm flexible on color. Probably in order I would say Deep Cherry Red then Silver. From that point the colors are a wash for me. Black is ok, Natural Green is alright, and Red is fine I guess

Is there a way for me to search?

i bit the bullet and accepted the 3.21 gears on mine. i was extremely pissed about the whole thing and i think it's bullshit. guess it gives me an excuse to raise it with bigger tires down the line and 're-gear' lol....tragic..

I have not been following Unlimiteds. This true that just a gear change changes max towing? I thought 2D was 2000 and 4D was 3500, regardless of gears?

the 3.73 is an option you pay for on JK automatic sports, else it comes standard 3.21

Hard to explain, but the way the fleet document explains it, is that the tow group in the auto has a 3500 lb towing capacity BECAUSE it has the 3.73. What it fails to point out is that now 3.21 is standard in auto/tow/unlimited Jeeps and the 3.73 is a $0 option, unlike in 2011

Ok I knew nothing about towing before joining these forums. So, excuse my confusion here. And ignorance.

So a 3.21 auto tow unlimited tows the exact same as Sport JK 3.21/3.73? Thought the majority had to do with wheelbase, and everything a longer wheelbase brings.

So that's why Up Hill Bill went with 3.73 instead of 4.1. He knew he wouldn't need to tow much, and has absolutely nothing to do with anything else.

Not really. My research and calculations on the new auto tranny gearing convinced me that 3.73s would suit my driving needs best. Lots of steep, winding country roads (especially the 4+ miles of steep - 2000 ft. elev. in 4 miles - twisting road I live on.) I wanted appropriate gearing so the tranny wouldn't be hunting back and forth for a gear going up hill, and would find a good gear for compression-braking going down.

Turns out the 3.73's hit the mark perfectly, but that was probably more luck than anything!
