My dealer asked if I wanted them to detail inside and/or outside. I've read threads about not having dealers detail the outside because they might put swirls in the paint. No problem - covered there. What about the inside? I don't know if he was offering that for free; I also don't know if it's even worthwhile. Shouldn't it be pristine to start with already?

That's crazy, I've bought 80 new cars in my life and Never been asked that question. ALL NEW vehicles should run through the "Detail" shop as part of pre-delivery. I have asked them to NOT;
- Swirl my paint. No Buffer, No brush wash etc.
- No greasy crap on my tires and
NO stickers or plate brackets.
Thanks. I don't fault him, I started off the conversation by saying "no exterior detailing to avoid swirling paint". I think he's trying to prep it exactly the way I want since I have been fairly precise about what I want and why to this point.
I think I'll amend my email to him by saying "please detail all except paint and tires as long as it's not an extra charge".
@GordonSmith - its common practice that the dealer will clean the vehicle inside and out. Now, they might be asking if you want the "slick 'em" on the dash etc. In that case, its personal preference. Just specify your thoughts and make you get them on YOUR page, not you on theirs. It wont be pristine when they unload it off the truck, thats for sure.
Hi Gordon,
If I remember correct, when I sent you a PM, you were getting quotes in both Texas and Phoenix. Which state gave you the best deal???
What model and color did you decide on? I hope to see some PICS when you get it.
As a quick suggestion, check all of your fluid levels. Keep a close eye on your coolant overflow level. The forecast I believe for this weekend is 107 degrees here.
Now to your topic, of detailing. Mine was just washed and clean, both inside and out when I picked it up. Nothing special was added to my tires or interior, that I could see.
Mine is black, no swirl markers or scratches that I could see. It just looked new, as it should have. I picked it up two days after they took delivery of it, so it really never sat on their lot.
The absolute BEST deal was from Utah. They beat the others "by just a little" but by an additional $1000 if I was to do the financing through them. After that, the next 2 best were from CO and TX - basically tied. I ended up buying in Phoenix. The deal I got in Phoenix actually beats CO and TX if you factor in expenses of getting a remote vehicle. I could've had it trucked to me OR fly to it and drive back. Due to work, I can largely fly to it for free but it would've cost ~1000 miles in gas plus some hotel stay and food. So in the end, I got it locally for a "slightly" better overall deal and I have a local "throat to choke" if something goes wrong. It would've sucked to have a 500 mile problem show up during a 1000 mile trip home.
Thanks or the fluid suggestions. I'll ask the dealer to double check and I'll keep an eye on them for the first few hundred miles at least. I hear so many different stories about Jeeps and initial problems that I want to make sure I catch them before they turn into real issues.
Do you have any recommendations on an northern Phoenix window tinting place btw?
To actually answer the question I had the same debate. I ultimately decided to let them do it. I hadn't been to the dealership at all prior to picking the Jeep up, and when I got there I see they actually had their own full car wash back I. The service department. I'd never seen that at a dealer before. I immediately regretted letting hem do it as I think those car washes are the devil, but I haven't found any marks from it on the Jeep.
That said the detail job was half assed, so personally I think you are better off doing it yourself.
