my ride back from vegas in a tow truck

so my srt-4 forum is pretty dead so i want to ask this here. so long story short i drove my srt-4 out to vegas for my 21st bday and on the way back i overheated my car till it shut it self off and i had to get towed 240 miles back home from vegas thanks to aaa. so my question is what happens to a car when it gets over heated till it shuts it self off. i should say it did make a wierd noise almost like knocking but not quite cause i do know what that sounds like only when i hit the gas right before it cut out. i know there are a lot of smart guys on this forum with lots of engine knowledge and equally important aquired knowledge what they think it will take to fix my poor car. i know im an idiot so i dont need any lectures i just what to know what happens to a car that overheats, rings, valves? and what you think it will take to fix it. thanks

head gasket blows, sometimes the head cracks or warps.

It depends on where the auto-shutoff was set. You likely boiled the coolant a fair bit, so check the level.
Beyond that, as WB said, blown head gasket, warped or cracked head up top. I'd also replace the t-stat and water pump, as they were likely part of the problem. Unless you know how/why it happened?
Also, you may have cooked your piston rings, damaged the pistons, and damaged the bores/liners- it depends on how hot it got- Mark W.

Isn't it still under warranty! There's no reason for a new vehicle to over heat! But anyway I sure you did some damage does it even run?

If you blew your HG to the point that you were pumping some serious coolant through your oil system the block and head may be toast due to the lack of lubrication. I really hope you are still under warrenty. And its always a smart move to stop driving a car that starts overheating before hits red so that you don't do such dammage.

If you had knocking something is surely broken.... as for warranty, the SRT models... well... they like to deny a lot of things.

Is your SRT-4 the Neon SRT-4 or the Caliber SRT-4? Just curious.

But yeah, you can count on head damage.

Vegas gets hot in the summer man. When heading out around those parts, always make sure you engine cooling system is running up to par. You would not believe the number of people who let their cars overheat in Vegas... that and let their tires blow out. :\

Probably. The timing on those overhead cam engines is stupid! It's a major pain to work on! I like my simple little Jeep and Turbo Diesel Yukon!

2000 labor for a head R&R is ridiculous IMO. or was that for a full rebuild?

yes the 2000 is for the full rebiuld plus parts once they figure out what ones they need. i thought it sounds a little steep too but i do know the engine is gonna need a lot of work i just know exactly what they said it could need a new head and they are gonna have to see how the cylinders/pistons look. so i dunno i just want to see it when it open. i really dont know of any good shops in my area so thats why it at the dealership now. does anyone know of any good shops in the orange county ca area?

id look for a srt specific place (there has to be one or at least a import place) you may be able to get a performance head for around the same price

i cant really find one. im on the almighty google and cant find anyone. i did find one dodge specific repair shop and he said 1600-1700 but he could do it faster with a better warranty, 3year/36000mile. im not too worried about getting a performance head or anything unless i can find a srt/dodge specific repair place or something that can do it all on one bill. i know its gonna be expensive i just want the best deal

You can destroy just about anything in your motor if it gets hot enough. You might even crack the block.

^ thats very true but i have been told with a newer car 05 like this that the computer has internal sensors to detect overheating and shut down the motor like it did. so i dont know im just being hopeful but i do know that at the very least the engine needs to be torn apart.

If you do have to take the engine apart you just make it faster.
