My tailgate stopper broke!!!

Yup, opened up my tailgate this past Friday and heard a "pop". Turns out the metal arm that connects the tailgate to the inside of my vehicle broke off!!! I tried guiding it back in the place where it obviously came detached but it was either warped or the opening was jammed. When the arm came detached it put strain on the nylon door stop and tore the bass speaker covering out of place. After much trying, I was unable to get the arm to go back in the way it was designed. I had to force the tailgate closed which folded the arm in on itself.

I already had an appointment scheduled for this morning at the dealership to have them look at my NAV system display screen so I asked them to take a look at the tailgate.

Dealer says NAV touch screen always "clicks" like that when you touch it and the tailgate isn't covered under warranty because the parts are not covered on my warranty! WHAT?!? Are you kidding me?! Since when does a warranty cover select parts? Where is this mysterious list of covered and non covered part?

Anyone else have this problem? Anyone HEARD of this problem? Can't imagine why it wouldn't be covered. I mean, my driveway is flat. It's not like I was on an incline and the door flung open. My husband put in a complaint with Chrysler but we're not expecting much satisfaction.

Dealership wants $700+ to fix it, BTW.

Any suggestions?

Something isn't right here.

Your tailgate broke but they say that particular part isn't covered?

Is it all stock? Do you have an oversized tire on the back?

It should be covered for 36 months or 36K miles. Unless the dealer thinks you broke it through negligence.

Yes, all stock. Including the spare.

This has happened to me twice on my 2012 Sahara. The hinge does not offer enough support to the tailgate, and the spare tire on the tailgate, and so the hinge breaks if the tailgate is opened on anything but flat ground. I am very frustrated. The folks at my dealership acted like they had never seen this before, but the repairs were entirely covered by my warranty. Now that its happened a second time, I am learning that there are many other instances of this exact same problem with other owners. This should be a recall and Chrysler needs to provide us with a hinge set sturdy enough to support the weight of the tailgate.

My Nav screen doesn't "click". You have bumper to bumper 3/36 except for a handful of wear items that's specifically mentioned in the warranty section. I would push the issue with the dealer, contact Chrysler customer care and/or go to another dealer. The tail gate is covered. They would have to prove that you damaged it due to negligence. I don't think opening & closing it would qualify as being negligent.

I agree opening and closing doesn't qualify as negligence. My driveway is on a hill and I have opened the tailgate numerous times without incident, but......I guide the tailgate to the fully open position. I could see the arm breaking if I open the tailgate and let gravity take over and the arm had to stop it at the end of its travel.

Not saying the OP did this.

The intent of the arm is to hold the tailgate OPEN so it doesn't swing shut while you are doing something in the rear cargo area.

My wife's Jk has had this happen twice. First time the arm broke in 2. Luckily, she still had the tools I left in her Jeep and she removed it. Took it to the dealer and they replaced. Second time, I was opening the gate and the entire thing popped out. I had to remove to close the gate. Took it back to dealer and was told this is a common thing and the parts are on back order. Still waiting for them to call us to let us know the parts are in, so we can have it fixed.

Dealer said Chrysler said they have not experienced this before. Made an appeal with Chrysler directly. Was told by Chrysler this is not a known issue and therefore owner negligence was at fault. Asked Chrysler to provide this decision in writting so I could have it on file. Chrysler refused.

I paid over $700 cash to have my tailgate fixed.

Chrysler sucks!!

I've now broken it TWICE! I was on totally flat ground this last time! Last time I broke it was end of November. I remembered having to bring it in twice because they bracket and the plastic U pieces came in at different times. This time I immediately took off the two plastic pieces so they didn't break. I have a 2012 Wrangler Unlimited.

Had this problem, too.

Now I have installed the Teraflex hinged carrier who also keeps the door open. So I deinstalled the badly constructed OEM part...

Cheers,
Guido

Tailgate stopper broke twice

The first time this happened, I was parked on a level spot, but a gust of wind blew the tailgate a little farther and the arm broke. The nylon door stop did nothing to protect the arm. And, yup, it tore the cover off the speaker. My husband took it in for me because he usually gets better results...not this time...they told him it wasn't covered and charged him $250. When I got it back, I noticed the door felt stiffer, as if something was wrong with the hinges and they hadn't fixed the speaker cover. The next day, in my garage, I opened the tailgate and didn't even take it back any farther than a right angle to the bumper and it broke again! This is not my first Wrangler and although I've never had one of these stops on it before, you could open up the gate much wider, until the nylon door stop was taut. This is a design flaw and should be covered under the warranty. We intend pursuing this with the dealer.

^^I'm not sure why the nylon strap isn't tighter. There's so much slack, it doesn't nothing other than look stupid. i guess it's a leftover from the previous years that didn't have to holding arm.

good luck!

Right. In my old 2010 Wrangler, the purpose of the nylon strap was to limit the gate's travel, so that it wouldn't open too far, but it opened a lot more than it does on this 2013. Before it reaches its limit, the stopper (whose purpose is to prevent the gate from squashing you in the event of a strong wind, or if you're parked on an uneven surface) breaks. Chrysler! This is an off-road vehicle! Why such flimsy parts? And why aren't these flimsy parts covered? My jeep is only 4 months old.

Ouch

Happened to me today on my 2013 JK. Was simply putting groceries in the back and put ample pressure on the door to open it all the way then all of a sudden "pop". Arm broke right out of the housing.

I'm blown away. Taking the jeep in today after work to get serviced. If they make me pay it will be my last vehicle from Chrysler and my last jeep sadly.

Jeep was just bought in September.

Is this happening to people with the rear subwoofer, or without? I noticed the tail gate stopper goes into the sub enclosure.

Mine had the subwoofer.

Just dropped it off. No mention of warranty or no warranty. They said they'd call me. Lets see what happens.

I too have had this happen to me. I opened the tailgate on a slight incline, and the stopper ripped out, and swung out so far that it cracked my tail light. The stopper being ripped out also cause the plastic trim around the subwoofer enclosure to crack. I brought my jeep to my dealer and they told me there was nothing they could do even though I have a bumper to bumper warranty!!!! This is absolutely insane that Chrysler isn't manning up about obviously having a flaw in their design....I mean c'mon that stupid black nylon strap does absolutely nothing in the way of helping stop the tailgate. I am beyond angry with this situation(I've only had my jeep for 6 months)

Anyone have pics? I don't have my jeep yet and I'm trying to picture what's going on here. As far as chyrsler cheap parts I do know about that. I have a 2011 Challenger RT and parts are breaking and falling apart all the time. I do agree that an offload vehicle should be able to handle opening the tailgate a few times without parts breaking in 2

Good News and Bad News - The good news is that my dealership fixed the problem at no cost. I didn't even have to ask.

Bad news is they didn't do anything to prevent it from happening again. The Nylon strap has about 4 inches of slack in it so the arm will simply pop out again and break as there is no stop. I may have to see about shortening it myself.

My dealer is covering the repair under warranty, I would never have paid $700 for it, I would have just left it off.
Anyone have a good fix or aftermarket part for this? I need something that wont let it swing open so far, not really something that holds it open....

My dealer repaired the broken tail gate latch for the second time but when I got it back I noticed that they had cracked the sub woofer case! Of course they had to order it and that was another 3 hours sitting at the service department! Luckily I took pictures of the latch after it broke and it showed that they case wasn't cracked until after the "repair"! Love to know of an after market strap that would work with the sub-woofer case.

This what I love about this forum. Here you have everyone talking about the same issue. I'd take this topic to the dealer and let them see the people talking about the issue. Maybe they'll be more inclined to fix it under warranty after seeing more customers having the same issue.

I will receive my unlimited in a couple weeks, and have an AEV bumper and tire carrier ready to go on. I hope this addition will help the tailgate stay to gather since there will be less weight on it.

Maybe, there'll be a permanent fix with a metal bracket in the future.

I wonder if you can just unbolt it and let the strap do the work? Or shorten the strap to match up with the hinge?

I think that making the strap shorter would be the the best and cheapest way to keep the tailgate stopper from breaking.
