Unfortunately all new cars are coming equipped with some method of cutting down on whiplash. Jeep choose this route. My brothers 350z not only had the head rests angled forward but the headrest rods actually poked you in the back. The more you pushed against the rods the more they pushed the rest into your head. Let me tell you those were some uncomfortable seats.
Bending works well....I haven't done it to my Wrangler but have done it for my mother's Ford Focus that had them tilted way forward and a coworker's F150...took about 10 minutes on a hydraulic press to bend them. I wrapped them up in foam/shrink wrap and then set the headrest portion on a board....the support rods on a board and then pressed down on the headrest on the high spot....bent them all about 1.5" and they were all great. Adjustable angle would be the best way for all manufacturer's to go but as stated if you want to score high on the crash test you need those forward angle headrests. If I drive in a car too long with them I get a sore neck and back.....screw that I'll take my chances in a crash before I'm sore everytime I go on a road trip.
The headrest angle is horrible. Makes me feel like I am sitting with horrible posture. I tried flipping them backwards which I agree, looks weird and then would provide zero whiplash protection. I want to be safe, just slightly more comfortable. I tried bending them with a wrench but backed off for fear of breaking them. I was afraid I was going to pull the rod right out of the headrest itself...I'll have to try again cause I can't live with it.
I will get a breaker bar and try to bend them just a bit. Some extra padding and a slightly less steep angle would have done the trick. My Suabru and 4Runner headrests were very supportive for the neck but did not angle the neck/spine as much if you pushed back against it fully. No other vehicle I have been in, has it this aggressively positioned. Then again, it is Chrysler we are talking about. Details are not their strength.

A length of pipe is best. Wrap the headrest in a towel. Place it front side up on the floor. Lay a board over the soft part. Slip the pipe over one rod. Place one foot on the board and one on the pipe and jump. Repeat on the other rod until they are the same. Inspect and replace to check the angle. Pull it out and have another go until you are comfortable. I'm 185 and it took me a good 45 min. of hard jumping work to get them right. You're not going to break them. You'll play hell even bending them. It was way harder than I thought it would be but it had to be done. Once I got over worrying about hurting them and got good and mad at them, it went fairly well. If you can bend these boogers by hand, I take my hat off to you.
I was on a forum the other day and they had this guy up in the Smoky Mountains that would fix your headrest for you. You will need to ship him your headrest but he will do a proper job for you if you are not inclined to taking a wrench to your headrest yourself. Pretty reasonable too. It looks like he would charge you about $82.00 for four headrest, shipping and all.
I am thinking about calling him and setting up an appointment in October as I am going up near that area for vacation.

This right up is awesome. My neck has been killing me every time I take a long trip in the JK. But not after bending the headrest posts. All vehicle manufacturers seem to be going to this design and it sucks. In their desire to save my neck during a crash they're runing it while just driving!

read this thread, got inspired from uphill Bill. went out to the garage, got the bar off my floor jack, the head rests out of the Jeep,
popped the plastic cover off the bottom of the head rest
wrapped the HR with a towel
rolled the Jeep up on the HR
used the floorjack bar to bend the bars straight
rolled the Jeep off the HR and reinstalled the HR back on the seats
they are straight on the seats and comfortable now, and did not break a sweat.

Late weigh in - I'm 6', my husband is 6'2" and I feel like the head restraints in our new '15 JK will snap my neck if we ever get in an accident. I understand why they're there, but I'd even be more inclined to just buy new ones that don't threaten to decapitate me in an accident.
Thanks for the hints on adjusting though - looks like the man has another project for the list (and not a honey-do list, this is the wrangler list)

I have the saddle leather interior, but would be willing to replace the passenger headrest for the occasional road trip because she can't sleep in the seat with the stock head rest.
Anyone replace their headrest(s)? Something more 'sleep friendly' maybe?
I am in need of a pair of front headrests from a 2011 or 12... If anyone wants get rid of theirs let me know... I bought my daughter a 2009 for her b'day. I haven't given it to her yet bc her birthday is not until Dec 7, had it for 3 months already trying to fix it up a little. Anyway, I replaced the seat covers with some from a 2011 and the oem covers don't fit the older oem headrests. So... if you want to ditch yours give me a shout.
