mygig?

I'm lost... I see "mygig" head units ranging from a couple hundred bucks to a couple thousand... I did a forum search, and a google search, and I just don't get how you figure out what you're looking at... I get the you got RER and a bunch of other acronyms, but at face value, it looks like a "mygig" radio could be a ton of things...

Anyone deal with these a lot that can explain what I'm looking at? At face value, I could do a lot better getting a pioneer, and figuring out what model have what features would be 100 times easier....

Mygig is the hard drive system in the head unit. People falsely call the head unit Mygig, whereas it's only a system. Some have nav, some don't. Ask questions of the seller, and make sure you're getting what you're after- Mark W.

I paid $1100 on ebay for the RER that has NAV/HDD/SAT. It looks like this:

Plugged in and worked no problem. If you are buying used make sure it came out of a Wrangler and not another Chrysler vehicle.

aw geez... so it has to be a wrangler specific radio even?

Takes me right back to my original question... why would I want one of these and not a Pioneer or Kenwood or something?

You can get a Kenwood with bluetooth by parrot and navigation by garmin for right around $1000... would an RER be better for some reason? From what I gather form searches, I'm pretty much asking for issues with bluetooth and software looking for an RER...

If you can get something for 1K you might be better going that route. Does the Kenwood have a HDD? I've never looked into anything aftermarket. I never had any issues with BT and I can get the software updates for free.

I could be wrong about Wrangler specific but I know it had to be a Jeep. The guy I bought from had them all separated. Maybe RER means for Jeep? It's been a year and a half so it's a bit foggy.

When I was looking into the aftermarket nav units, it seemed that the ones that offered traffic updates via satellite were all more expensive then the RER, which is why I chose to buy the RER. Having the RER now, I think it has every feature the aftermarket Pioneer in my wives car had and even more.

You can verify what model you need by looking it up on here: Jeep Parts - The Official Jeep Parts eStore offered by Mopar

Just a heads up- if you go aftermarket, it doesn't include a satellite radio or the $130 interface you need to keep the OEM CANBUS system happy. SOME have built-in Bluetooth, some it requires an optional $100+ module.
The OEM systems plug right in, and SHOULD (if bought from a reputable dealer/seller) include both the Sirius antenna and the Bluetooth module and mic.
So, yes, there are better aftermarket options- just make sure you're getting one when you buy it Mark W.

OK, you guys have cleared up most of my confusion I'm a little fuzzy on that CANBUS thing up there though... doesn't make sense, but I have a guess...

The computer actually controls the DVD playback and Navigation control, instead of having a switch wired to the parking brake, and when there's no input from the radio the computer gets a little upset about it? (hence the "lockpick" thingamajigs all over e-bay?)

What If the stock radio I got is just a plain jane CD player with no need to control DVD or Navi? Will the computer "look" to make sure the plain old CD player stays there? On 99% of OEM DVD players you can run the "safety" wire straight to ground and not worry about it...

CANBus is Controller Area Network Bus- basically, it uses one bus (wireset) to control quite a large number of systems.
On the newer vehicles with this system, the dealer must turn on OEM systems via their computers, or they won't work. If you go aftermarket, you have no worries for this, but for factory stuff, it's all integrated- Mark W.

Alrightie... got a MUCH better picture of what I'm looking at now thanks much all. I originally figured that there'd be mall crawlers out there upgrading their stock RER and I could get a steal on a fairly new pull on ebay or something, but now I'm thinkin that I'd much better off getting somethin aftermarket and not have to hassle with dealer programming, lockpick modules, and whatever else... Now I just gotta see if I can find a marine grade double DIN DVD/NAV setup

The RER nav system works differently on the Jeep products. It has to have come from a Chrysler Sebring or a Wrangler to work in the Wrangler.

A Sebring unit won't work on a Wrangler.

The key is the CAN bus speed. Wranglers have a high speed bus. You can use a mygig from a Liberty, Town and Country or Dodge RAM, as these also have the high speed bus. For example, I have an RBZ mygig from a 2009 Town and Country - it works well.

The definitive reference is here
Jeep Grand Cherokee WK - MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment System radios

Lots of useful information there.

I have an RER, but it doesn't look like the RER they show there. I don't have buttons along the bottom. Maybe it's an older version?

Here is a site with software upgrades:

Actually there are different buses besides Canbus. They all work at different speeds. Sebring and Wrangler share the same IHS(Interior high speed bus). Not saying something can't be made to work, but could end up making other more important things on the network work slower. not all models share the same networks, vehicles can be configured differently. Just be careful on anything you buy.
