Navigation no longer works / GPS is OFF

So looks like the navigation crapped out. I have the 430n and tried to "view map" today and found out its not working. When starting the nav screen it says "Can't unlock maps", followed by "Detailed maps are required for routing. No detailed maps were found on this unit." Looks like somehow the "detailed maps" were deleted, because it will still give me my coordinates if I press the where am I.

Anyone have this problem? I'm going to try to get help from someone at Uconnect tomorrow...

Everything else is working perfectly fine. I haven't tried uploading music on it or anything for that matter. I do remember coming across it earlier and saying I had 20-something gb available, assuming its reading it.. Should I try adding music to verify its working fine?

Uconnect can't help, they gave me the number to "Here" that provides the maps for this system, but they don't offer technical support for customers.

At the dealer now to see what they say.

Edit: service advisor said it's not covered under factory warranty, that I would have to buy the maps online and install them, I have to update it. They did say there is an update for the head unit regarding the hands free module or something like that, he said it might fix it.

That's silly. Map updates are not free but there should already be a detailed map database that was installed from the factory in your 430N, even if it is outdated. Ask them to pull up the display for it.

If they cannot, tell them to replace the unit, which IS covered under factory warranty. Something is going on with the HDD.

Just go back to the dealer and tell them you want a new unit if it's under warranty. I had to wait 3-4 weeks for mine though, so I hope you don't need one straight away. :) Dealer told me the same BS with the maps too, for all I know I have 2013 maps in my new unit I just got, but at least it works now.
The display - the touch screen.
Well glad to know it's not just mine. Now to get it replaced. Thanks for sharing your experience

If you somehow seized the system by uploading music or other stuff into it, they may consider it owner error and, thus, outside of the warranty.

The good news is some dealers are more willing than others to side with the customer and work around warranty policies.

Good luck.

Then the dealer should fixed it if your Jeep is still under warranty.

Many dealers are at a loss when it comes to fixing head units, so you may need to try a few visits or a few dealerships.

New Rubicon owner here (got the Jeep Jan 4th) and my first visit was last week (missing windshield weatherstripping), got it back and next day noticed the navi system not working. Garmin logo shows up (which never did before), stays there for a while and then blank screen and back to the Garmin logo; turned it off and back on... then navi comes on but touched any are on the screen and same thing happens... Garmin logo again. Not sure why the dealer had to mess with the navi when they were just going to fix the windshield. Now I need to drop the car off next week to et this fixed. Any idea what this could be?

#16 ·
This is what was happening to mine, it was like the software kept rebooting over and over. I got a new radio and it took weeks to get it. :) I'm curious about the weather stripping, how did you notice that was missing? I have a heck of an "airflow" coming from the dash/windshield and wonder if I'm missing something up there. :)

#15 ·
Well, this was easier than I thought, went to the dealer, technician did a quick check and said it was a software issue, decided not to do anything (he said a reset would work for a few days... maybe)... I will get a brand new radio next week. End of story (hopefully).

I have an appointment at another dealership today and I'm hoping it goes as smooth as yours!
Same thing here.
2015 JKUR with 430N, radio started acting up October last year. It will not let me input an address, every time I hit the "address" tap, the radio freeze up for a minute and then restart itself. My dealer replaced the radio in November , it was good until yesterday and the same symptom happen again except this time around, the Nav keep restarting itself even I didn't hit the "address" tap.
I hope you guys have better luck on fitting this problem.
That really sucks, hoping they find a permanent fix for these faulty headunits or at least extend the warranty coverage on them...

Twice in less than 6 months??? Hope to have better luck :pcwhack: Anybody knows who the supplier for this units is? Would be good to find out the root cause of this issue.
Hope you get yours fixed soon The C People

Just want to follow up on my earlier post about the 430N radio Nav keeps restarting itself . I brought my Jeep in this morning and my dealer said they tried updating the software without any success of fixing the Nav. They will order a new radio for me again.
One more thing I want to add is when the Nav restarting itself, I switch it over to the radio side and the radio is working perfectly. Just the Nav side is restarting.

#23 ·
Wow so this next one will be your 3rd one?

Like I said previously I really hope Jeep extends the warranty for these faulty head units. What sucks the most is that I was looking at the mygig lockpicks before mine started acting up, I would love to add front and rear cameras but with how faulty these are I wouldn't feel comfortable modifying it. Maybe I'll ask my dealer if theyre willing to flash it at install to accept the back up camera and settle for that.

#25 ·
I have the same "cant unlock maps" error. unfortunately I bought it separately from a guy on this forum and later it broke... since it did not come with my jeep, its' not under warranty. I hoped someone had a fix for that! :(

#26 ·
I got this 'Can't unlock maps data'. Took it to the dealer. They are ordering a new head unit under warranty. Works for me but seems like a waste that they (or Garmin) can't fix this with a software update or reset.

#27 ·
Can't unlock maps. Detailed maps required for routing. No detailed maps were found...

I have the exact same issue as the OP, of course I'm at 39,600 miles.
I want to smash the 430N with a hammer.....

Other than replacing the unit, has anybody been able to fix this through a (dreaded) software update?

Everything else on the unit works, other than the navigation took a crap.

Never have uploaded any music (do people still even do that?) into the hard disk, no images. Only change was over two years ago flashed the unit to recognize the backup camera.
Got to love this POS quality...

Kori @JeepCares :

is FCA willing to cover this failed 430N unit even though I am slightly over the 36,000 mile warranty? (I'm at 39,600), vehicle was purchased brand new April 29th 2015.

#28 ·
I'm not aware of any fix for this other than replacing the unit. I had mine replaced for this too.

There's a company that sells replacement hard drives for these and they have notes on their site specifically calling out this problem and telling you not to order a hard drive. It's a problem with some circuit board that handles the nav.

#29 ·
Thanks, that sucks. Time to pull out my old windshield mounted gps.

#30 ·
I will be doing a dealer flash for the backup camera soon. My JK is out of warranty. If I loose the Nav due to their flash will they cover it? It works great but probably needs an update.

#31 ·
Careful since you are out of warranty..., they will not cover loss of NAV while flashing for backup. I'm pretty sure they might make you sign a waiver that they are not responsible for screw ups.

#32 ·
If the jeep no longer runs or any other electrical issue after the camera flash will that also not be covered?

It's worth mentioning that to enable the backup camera, they don't "flash" the head unit. They flash the Jeep. I'm not sure what part. Is there a BCM or something? But it's the Jeep they change and the head unit picks that up. If you were to then swap the head unit for another one, the camera should still work.

#35 ·
The issue here is that they were not smart enough(too cheap) to use a solid state hard drive in these headunits. There is no way a rotating disk will last very long in something as rough as a Jeep. My nav crapped out about a year ago, but for now everything else(music and pictures) still works. There is a place that will sell you an upgraded hard drive or entire unit. I think it's called NavRepair. I just haven't shelled out the bucks to fix mine yet.

#37 ·
It's not the hard drive. If it were the hard drive it would have taken your music with it. It is a board in the unit unique to the Nav function. When the board fails, the Nav thinks there are no maps on the HD. Besides, since it is only a 40GB it is most likely a SS drive anyhow. I had the 430 in a 2008 Chrysler T&C and it never gave an issue. It had a 20GB HD and I don't even think you could buy a 20GB rotating drive then. SSDs use flash memory but are still called hard drives.

I have several SSDs in PCs and the largest is 1TB. They make them bigger than that now. Looking at the site for replacement hard drives, they have two types - standard duty and automotive duty which if you prowl around enough are SSDs but with an IDE interface (takes less space).

#36 ·
Perhaps while they are in there I can have them update the Nav and correct the tire size and change the TPMS limits.

#38 ·
board or hard drive, the fact is that the NAV no longer works on my 2.5 year old 430N....

#39 ·
True. But if it were the HD, you can get replacements for it and install it yourself. Since it's a board, it replace the entire 430N time. Just letting you know, of course if you go to the MyGig website for replacement hard drives they walk you through that.

There is another issue with the Nav on the 430N where it locks on start up, displaying the start up screen. The one in my Sahara did that this past April. However, after stopping for 15 minutes to get directions (I was in a town I had never been in before trying to find my way back to the motel). After I got directions, I got back in the Sahara (I had also filled the tank) and started the Jeep and voila, the nav booted right up. It acted like there was a crack in the PC board, so when it got hot, it malfunctioned, but after cooling down a bit, it was fine.

From then on, I always had my trusty old Garmin 1390LMT with me. Plus it had free quarterly updates of the maps. It may be 7 years old but still works and is more up to date. Of course the nav on the 430N also worked flawlessly from then on as well (until I traded it in on the Chief - also with a 430N).

This happened to me several times in winter at cold starts, then it would fix itself after several on/off cycles and probably warmer temperatures...

And to think this unit retails for $1,095... at least the radio and my back up camera still work, for now :lmao:

Kori,

Dealership called and they are charging me full radio price $5XX plus labor... I told them no and that I had opened a Jeepcare case, they said they need to wait for the call, how soon will that happen? After that, what are next steps?

Thanks,
