Need 2007 help

alright guys well i finally found a jeep that i like and has all the right stuff. its a 2007 four door JK with dual tops and 32K miles on the engine. pretty much stock so i dont think its been messed with at all.

my question is this: i heard what i think is a ticking sound coming from the engine. i put my fingers on the valve cover and i can feel the same tick that i hear. IS THIS NORMAL FOR THE 3.8L???

normally a ticking or knocking sound is generally a bad thing. it just ran out of its 36K or 3 years warranty because it was sold in Nov. 2006, dont know if its got the 5yr 60K drivetrain warranty or not...

they are going to check on the warranty on monday morning and if its covered send it over to a jeep dealership to have it checked out, if not they are going to have one of their mechanics look at it (its a honda dealership my mom works for) and see if they can tell if anything is wrong with it or if im just buyer paranoid here...

please give me all the info you can, does this happen on any of your JK's or is this not right? I dont want to spend $25K (after taxes and all) on this jeep if im going to have to turn around and get it fixed for lots of dough...

(alittle more info on the situation: they arent the ones that bought the jeep, it was in nashville TN at a bmw dealership and they are both owned by the same corp so i had them drive it down to chattanooga (about 2 hours) so i could buy it through my moms dealership and get employee discount)

i havent signed anything so im not liable at this point for the vehicle...

thanks guys.

this issue could be as simple as a common issue or as complex as a rod knocking, or a lifter or something of the sort... i just dont know, never delt with the new engine b4...

here is a pic:

That looks pretty nice man! Same color as mine, only I've got the 2dr version. My engine doesn't tick. I've got 07 with about 20k on it. The only strange noise I've noticed at all is when the engine is warm, I'll hear a noise shifting from drive to reverse, or park into drive, etc. (automatic tranny) Apparently normal according to the stealership, and a Chrysler fan boy. unless someone chimes in and says differently, I'd be a little concerned and open the hood up and play around with your engine.

If you still want to get it, that's awesome leverage to use to knock that price down, even if someone on this forum deems your ticking to be normal a Honda dealership won't know that. (I don't believe it is) my engine is quiet as a mouse.

I got mine used also from Honda and they had no clue I had a 2" BB and an aftermarket front bumper, so you could potentially really pull there pants down on this engine noise issue. If it's something minor...I'd still purchase it though.

Good luck to you!

Nothing normal about, especially if it varies relative to the RPM

The 3.8L Chrsler V6 has a long great history of dependability/operation/ease of ops, but

Timing chains tick/alternaters tick/belt tensioners tick/faulty valve lifters tick/bombs tick--none of it is cheap, better have your mechanics check before signing on the bottom line

If it's a hydraulic lifter, they're cheap, but changing them-by a dealer ain't cheap

Good luck

Like Jimbo said, if it's not the fuel injection ticking, excuse yourself politely and leave table.

That's why I want someone else to check it out because I can't tell what it is. I didn't know if there was any normal ticking that went on under the hood for these engines.

well it checked out with two of their mechanics and i even had my dad take a look at it (been a mechanic for 25+ years), he sat it next to an employee of his' JK with alittle less miles but 07 just the same and he said they both had the sound i talked about but mine was just a little more prominent (assuming because of the higher mileage) so in my eyes its cleared...

to be on the safe side i am going to buy an extended warranty on it for JIC circumstances, going to go sign the paper work tonight and pick her up!

im so pumped!!!

Hey YJ, congrats on the JK.
I think you will really be pleased with it.
This is my first expericence with the 3.8's and they seem to be a little louder than I thought they should. Even felt like I've heard some ticking. Really think it will be alright for you. Many, many years ago I was told not to listen so hard and turn up the radio. Enjoy!!

Congrats on the new addition. Your are keeping the YJ to do the real work and the JK for show right? Wouldn't want to scratch it or anything.

Nice looking jeep. I have the same color in an 08. I love driving it. You'll have to let us know what going from one jeep to the other is like.
