Question Need comments on used Jeep market

Today I stopped at a larger dealer and looked at 4 or 5 used Wranglers.

While not what I was after, market familiarity helps in making good decisions IMHO.

Here's what I saw

2006 "Trail Ready Unlimited" 1 piece hard top; 2~3" lift, NICE rims, auto trans, air, straight & very clean; foglights, great tires. 26,000 miles
$21899. Sales guy was trying to convince me this 'unlimited' meant 'extended wheel base'. It looked the same as the other 2 doors as far as I could tell. This was actually rather appealing except for the top and the age.

And the price of course. It would seem to me that should be worth about $16 to a guy with cash and no hurry. Or am I wrong here?

2007 Wrangler X air/auto/soft top 23000 miles
$23999

2002 Sahara air/auto/soft top. 106000 miles
$12,000 (cash he bumped down to "about $10k---which is still too much for that amount of use, yes?)

I told the salesman I had office bldg for sale and would be paying cash pending closure of that deal, "What is your BOTTOM cash price on these?"

He went to find out, came back with a basic 20% reduction of any displayed price. Pumped me for 'financing easy terms, 90 day no cash etc etc'.

From comments of others here, and from the "True Market Value" of the banner ad above, I get the idea I "should" be able to get what I'm after for around $23000+" including the deal from the 'walklightly'? site.

Probably will be 3-4 months before actual finances are in place.

Looking for 4 door Unlimited, auto/hard top 3 piece, air, rescue green. Other details to be established. Could stand one with under 25K for reasonable savings.

Where are you located? As location can swing prices thousands of dollars.

If I am not mistaken the 2006 "unlimited" means more space in the trunk area.. so yes, longer wheel base. I have a JK 2007-2010 models and I love it. Little wider (little more space), more comfortable on the road, nicer amenities, etc. Seems like off-road upgrades are a little cheaper for the models below it but still its a Jeep so stuff is cheap anyways.

Looking at that second option... I paid maybe $500 more than that for a brand new 2010 Sport (X) with 8 miles... so.... keep that in mind. Mine has AC/the larger tires and cruise control. I was looking at some Rubicons used with 30,000 miles at about 19-21, so that price is definitely too high.

Price does vary by location but you can certainly find cheaper Wranglers out there, although as I am sure you already see, they hold their value.

I loved my 06 Unlimited. I now have a 09 Unlimited and I love it too. They both have their pros and cons... but if you want it to be more comfortable, the JK series tends to be that way. For you and the passengers.

But dang, those prices are nutty. I got my 09 new for $24k and it came with a lot of goodies. Just saying. Then again, Jeeps do hold value... have you compared new prices to used? If there isn't much difference, go new.

As I just went through the shopping/buying process, I would say those prices offered in the OP are waaaaaaaaaay too high. Then again, if someone buys them at those prices, they aren't, but whatever.

I noticed with the newer ones (especially from dealerships) is that you can always find a good deal if you shop around, seeing as how dealerships love to lowball trade-ins as a matter of course. For older rigs (2000 and back), they seem to be fetching more than regular private party value, at least up here anyway. KBB is a little off right now with the economic ups and downs of the last two years; the market seems to have recovered past the economic trends of last year, so the values compiled and available for reference right now actually reflect the average of what someone would have paid in a different economic climate. At least that's my layman's theory on it.

Old Jeeps in good condition are more rare than KBB or any buying guide gives them credit for, depending on the climate. Dealerships, however, will ALWAYS find a way to part a fool from his rig for much, much less than "market value," so good deals are to be had. For the record, I've payed asking price on exactly one vehicle from a dealership - a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, and that was because I really wanted that car and every other dealership in the country was tacking $2-3k onto asking because they could! I would never pay bluebook for a used vehicle, however, and I'm not in the minority there.

Also, if the dealership didn't install the aftermarket stuff themselves, chances are they didn't pay the guy trading it in for any it. So, don't think you have to pay for it, either.

Never tell a dealer your selling office buildings then buying the Jeep in cash. Wait untill you talk him down as much as possible before you disclose any info that he doesn't need to know.

I got my 2007 X soft top, automatic with 17K miles for $15,800 in December. Basic Wrangler but I built it up for another $4K. The economy is not very good so I would still expect good prices. Use the NADA as a guide.

I've got a 2010 Unlimited soft top with 7500 miles on it. My wife has to go back to school in the fall and we're looking to unload it. It's in near perfect condition and we're looking for $25,000 firm. It stickered for $28000. Upgraded wheels/tires and tint on side/back windows. Power locks/windows and cruise. We're located in Maine.

I'm in Orygun Territory....a hell of a drive from Maine....

re: "Wait untill you talk him down as much as possible before you disclose any info that he doesn't need to know."

Good point. My tactic in this instance has been to go to dealers otherwise I'd never visit; when they start getting giddy about a 'sale' I put them on hold with the strong notion of 1) I'm serious; 2) I have the means IF the deal is right; 3)I ain't in a hurry regardless of their blather.

Appreciate the comments especially about the relative values fluctuating.

And eventually the building may change hands and I might upgrade my choice.

While I've always rather dreamed of "Rubicon" in watching the YouTube stuff, I'm NEVER going to be into heavy rock climbing etc. Don't know whether the fancy front end parts are otherwise worth the cost for my use.

I had a feeling it was high-end regardless of his "20% off" riff. I still think his prices are above area norms....which is of course why I don't generally go there anyway.

It's great to compare what other deals one should look for. Thanks JKers!

It's called www.TreadLightly.org. The discount is only good on new vehicles. Used Wranglers hold their value very well. You should compare the dealer's price with prices found at www.edmunds.com.

Wow these units really do hold their value. My 09 Sahara with 15K miles is worth a lot more than I thought. Not that I would ever sell it

I've bought some big ticket items like my used boat and RV in Portland Orygun that is really cheap. Keep scouting it out.
