I just put my order in for a brand new Wrangler. I got a call today from the credit manager suggesting that I purchase the extended warranty to take me from 3 year 60,000k to 5 year 100k. He also suggested the rust warranty that covers any surface rust for like 40 years.
I plan on keeping the truck for 5-6 years. I also plan on modifying the jeep, adding tires, rims, maybe a lift, new fenders, etc. The price of both the extended warranty and the rust warranty is 3k.
1.Will the modifications I make void the extended warranty?
2. are both these warranties worth the money? (he told me 3k for both is an amazing deal).

1. Any mods that you do have to be linked as the cause of the problem. If you install a lift and have a suspension problem down the road, then it might not be covered. If your ac goes out, then it should be covered because the lift has nothing to do with it. I know several dealerships that over look mods and still file the warranty claims. Our service dept looks at it like this. As longs as the mods were installed properly and they get paid, then it's not a problem.
2. Extended warranties come in different levels. Find out what is covered, what is not and what is the deductible. Also $3k is not an amazing deal.
Shouldn't that extended warranty be about 1200 or so? Just a basic wrap. And I would a little skeptical of a 40 year rust warranty, that company could be out of business in 8 years.
I've passed on about $20,000 worth of extended warranties over the years. I've had a couple hundred dollars of unanticipated repairs during that time. Extended warranties usually only make good sense for the dealer because it's a big profit item.
I just wanted to clarify.
The extended warranty which is a Chrysler product (according to the dealer) was 2800 and he's giving it to me for 1500. The other 1500 is for full undercoating and full door panel etc rust proofing, which is again a chrysler product according to the dealer.
The prices some people have mentioned on here are for the lifetime warranty. If you're only going to keep it 5-6 years, as you said, you might look into a less expensive warranty. You can still get it through ClayR and I imagine for a whole lot less $$$ than your local dealer.
Go to chryslerwarrantys.com and check the cost of some of their extended warranties. ClayR can probably beat the price by several hundred dollars.
99.999% of Credit managers and car salesmen are all lying douchebags looking for extra commissions by upselling. They will promise the world to get and extra $100 out of you.
You still have 3 full years to buy an extended bumper to bumper warranty.
As long as you buy it before your current coverage expires your good.
Chrysler extended warranty is widely available and highly negotiable. Shop around.
I got the lifetime warranty for 1850 from my dealer. I told him he could sell it to me or I would by it from Clay R or Noble. Both were selling them when we got our 2014.
I gave my local dealer a chance to sell me the lifetime warranty. We'd had our 2013 JK for about 11 months and ClayR and Noble were selling the lifetime warranty for under $1,900 at the time.
I took a printout of some price discussions here on the board and showed the finance manager. I said if he could match the price I'd buy it. He replied that the price was lower than their cost. The best they could do was around $2,700.
It seemed like a bit of a bait and switch play from the dealership. At first I was dealing with my sales rep who gave me a fantastic deal. He discounted the Jeep, and discounted the few options that I took. I felt that he was being very honest with his advice. He didn't force anything on me. He actually said "you don't need that" a few times, knowing that I wanted to mod the Jeep. The stink started when the credit manager called me up after the deal was done. He kept saying that the only way he could offer me the 0% financing for 3 years was if I purchased the extended warranty and the lifetime rust protection. He said my credit was good, but not good enough for the 0% financing and for me to get the 0% financing I would have to sweeten the deal by purchasing the extended warranty and the rust proofing. I was confused by all this because I know my credit is good and felt that he was trying to pull a fast one on me. I even suggested paying for half of the jeep on delivery and then they could finance the balance at 0%. He skirted the issue and kept pushing the warranty's.
I went back to talking with my sales rep and explained to him that getting an extended warranty that would not be honoured after me doing my mod's to the Jeep would be stupid. At this point he agreed that that because I was planning on modifying the Jeep, the extended warranty wouldn't make sense. He then said that the rust protection for $1500 is worth it's weight in gold (exact words).
I'm a little upset because I really liked my sales rep at first. I had already told my wife and brother in-laws that the next time they need anything they should speak with this sales rep, he cuts the best deal without the BS. But once the credit manager got involved, everything changed.
At this point I don't think I'm going to take the extended warranty, but I am still considering the lifetime rust warranty because my current Wrangler has broken out in a few places and it would be nice to know that would get repaired if it ever happened to my new Jeep. Though I still don't know if it's worth $1500
Thanks for listening.
The dealership I purchased my wrangler from pulled a similar ploy. At first I had no urge to purchase the extended warranty from them because I planned on buying ti from clay on WF. Plus I also had my financing lined up threw my credit union so I was pretty much set. I had worked my ass off for months negotiating with different dealerships in my area to get the "best deal" Little did I realize that you are only halfway done when you sign that first contract.
The second sales guy you meet is the fiance officer. These guys are paid big bucks to take your money. I was also told my the dealership that they could beat the rate I had gotten for in financing but I had to buy to extended warranty. I was told "oh well the bank likes to see that your protecting your investment so that is why they will give you lower rate" That made no sense to me but I loved the rate they were giving me so i took the bate. I called and canceled the warranty with they dealership the next week and bought the lifetime from clay.
What I learned from this experience:
1. the dealership canNOT package the warranty and your financing together, they cannot say if you buy this, we'll give you this. The bank could careless if you buy an extended warranty or not. Thats why they have this thing called insurance. Thats what is really protecting your investment.
2. The bank lending the money to you gives the dealership their rate. Depending on what state you live in, the dealership can mark up that rate a certain %. Straight profit for them.
3. Like said in an earlier post, extended warranties are a huge ticket item for the dealership so if they sell you the warranty then they wont mark up your financing, usually.
You have 30 days to get out of any extended warranty...so get it, then drop it. Usually you can drop it even after the 30 days, they'll just pro-rate it.
Does the "warranty" (which to me, is synonymous with "useless piece of paper")cover frame rust? Does it replace the frame if it rots? Which, cus it's a JEEP, it eventually will...lol. Otherwise, I'd say No Way.
Good points guys. I asked if the rust warranty covers the frame when he first spoke to me about the rust warranty. The finance officer told me that it only covers panels, I told him that there is not point in giving someone a 40 year rust warranty if you're not going to cover the frame, he said the frame never rusts out, it's the panels. Honestly at this point I really don't want to take any of the 2 warranties, I now feel like the are both a cash grab.
Thanks for all the advice, you can't understand how much this helps.
I wonder if it might be smarter to take the Jeep without any warranty, then take the Jeep to a rust proofing company? Is this worth it, or should I just leave it alone?
Leave it alone. And if your dealer continues to be a pain in the ass - buy somewhere else. Or buy the warranties and cancel them the next day. Life's too short to put up with this bs.
Thanks Keviper1, that's exactly what I'm going to do. If they push the warranty to get me the 0%, I'll take one of the warranties, then once the deal is done, I'll cancel the warranty the next day.
Be sure to check out the cancellation policies. They do vary. I have seen policies that have a $50 cancellation fee even if the contract is cancelled the next day. Some allow you to cancel up to 30 days before the cancellation fee kicks in. Still others allow you to cancel up to 90 days before the pro-rate kicks in, but may still be subject to the cancellation fee.
Even if there is a fee, it still may be worth it to get 0%.
I'm going to try and get the 0% without any of the warranties. I can put a huge amount down. If they still try and give me a hard time I'll pay for the Jeep in full on delivery.
Hehe...tell the finance guy you have done a ton of research on rust problems for the Wrangler, and it appears their frames are *notorious* for rusting out! If the warranty does not say it covers frame rust, you don't want it. Print out one of the "rust" threads and bring it along for backup: see what he says to that....."Wrangler frames never rust out..." indeed!!
