Need help: Tire/Wheel questions

I have a 2011 Unlimited Sport 4dr. It has the 16 inch stock wheels. I want to upgrade to Duratrac 285/75/16. I know I will also need to change the wheels. One of the places that I went to for an estimate said that I really should go with 17 because its getting harder to get tires for 16's. Is this true? They also said that I couldn't put 285's on it without a leveling kit. What are my options? I don't have a big budget. I need tires that are great in snow and that have a rugged look. Thanks for any help!

I have a 2dr sport and been looking at tire and wheels for a couple of weeks. Everyone i talked to also suggested going with 17'' because of more tire options. Ended up getting the cepek dc2's 17x9 with 265/70/17 all terrain. having them installed today.

I have 16's and it is more difficult to find tires for anything 37" or bigger. If you plan on going no bigger than 35", than 16's will be fine. Most ever manufacturer makes a 315/75R16, which is a 35.

You have to understand that tires for 17" wheels are more expensive than tires for 16's and 15's. Having said that you can probably buy a set of 15" wheels with tires for the price of rubber for 17's alone. Also, I beleive a 285 will fit without a level kit, you just need a wheel spacer to run it on OEM wheels.

As for which tire, the Goodyear Duratrac are popular and with good reason. Also the Falken Wildpeak/Rocky Mountain (my next set in 325/80R16)

Thanks Guys, that's very helpful. JKNoob, can you post pics when its done? I want to see the 265's.
Daniel M, Would you recommend that I go down to 15's instead of 16's? I do intend on buying new wheels. The OEM is only 16x7 so I want to get something else.
Thanks for any input!!

I have a 2011 unlimited with stock 17 inch wheels. I just got 2 inch wheel spacers. Is that enough to fit 305/60/17 or 305/70/17 tires on stock 17s with no other mods. I'd like all terrain tires.. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help!

With 2" spacers you're fine. Just make sure you check torque on em every tire rotation.

have you had any issues with the weight of the 16" falkens? I know there like 62lbs a piece vs the 15" ones (54lbs)
