Exclamation Need Help Touchscreen

2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4 door.

I have sun damage to the plastic protective screen that goes over my NAV/Radio touchscreen. I live in good climate and have my top off all year round.

I called my dealer and was told that I'd have to order a new radio unit ($2,500) to fix what can't be more than a $1 problem. The radio and NAV work perfectly but can only really be seen at night or out of light as the plastic has turned completely gray.

This seems like profiteering to me and even though I love my Jeep (it's my first one) it will be my last if I can't sort this out without replacing the unit with OEM or even after market.

It's just not right.

Has anyone else had this problem??

And therein lies the problem with modern technology... $2500 for the stock radio head unit. could I ask for $2500 off the sticker price if they ship it with speakers and no head unit and I could install my own for under $200...

Sorry I can't be a help, but god speed on your quest for radio justice!

What have we got?

I have the same type stereo but haven't encountered that type issue. Thanks for the warning though. If I were you, I'd make friends with the local salvage yards in hopes that one may come through with a similar stereo. It doesn't have to just be a Wrangler that you're looking for! Here in southwest Tennessee we have a salvage yard that specializes in Jeeps and other Mopars. Good luck!

I have, it seems my only other option is to go after market for $1200. This is still not ok with me. It's crazy.

Man sorry to see that i hope that doesnt happen to me .you didnt clean the screen with a harsh chemical did you? Did you look on ebay ive seen radios on there for like half of what dealer wants .i would push the issue at the dealer to have it covered under warranty as a deffect or flaw in the unit.try to find out who makes the radio for them and contact them .might be alpine or eclipse thats who makes toyotas radios (eclipse) good luck

no chemicals whatsoever, just a lot of sun exposure.

I have a problem with my touchscreen in that there is a wear on the protective film. Some of it is completely gone. Were you able to find a way to remove and replace the film? Have you found a solution to your problem?

Man that really blows...

I had a touchscreen laptop that was really cool...but I worried about the long term effects to it. I only had it for four months before it had to go back (Intel Sandy Bridge Chipset issue)...and Hewlett Packard had stopped making them by the time I ordered another one.

Bad Touchscreen

MASONC29 - As incredible as it may sound, they cannot replace just the protective cover (what could be no more than a $1). They have to replace the entire head unit ($2500). I freaked out on them on the phone at customer service and they agreed to replace the whole thing for free. I'm taking it in on Monday (the car has been in Mexico until last week). They said they would do it as it was just a month out of warranty. It's got to be a fairly common problem and they don't want bad press so give them hell and hope for the best.

These guys will fix you up for a very reasonable cost:

The cost of the head unit was justification enough for me to buy the lifetime extended warranty. The're is no way those delicate 2.5" hard drives will make it to 10 years (probobly a lot less), especially in a Wrangler.

By the way, if you use car washes, they are likely cleaning the interior with an ammonia based cleaner like windex. Ammonia + sun exposure will "craze" plastic that way.
