Need help with a clunk

Hey everyone -

So here is the story. I suddenly started hearing a clunk in the front end, usually when stopping and turning at the same time (i.e. pulling up to a yield with a turn). I can also feel the clunk in the steering wheel.

I took it to the dealer, and even though they could reproduce it, they could not figure it out. Also, on the 2nd day they had it, it went away.

It came back once for a day, then was gone for 2 weeks.

Today it started again. No rhyme or reason to it (not wheeling or anything), it just starts.

I am running a TF 2.5" BB with shocks on a 2012 2DR Rubi. I think the clunk is coming from the front driver quarter, but can't be certain.

Today it was really bad, so I had my wife turn the wheel while I videoed. It is a little hard to hear, but you can hear it when the wheel starts turning in either direction.

Since this video, it has stopped, and I didn't touch anything.

Could try and check the track bar and other bolts for the undersized 14mm bolt and wear of the brackets....
Could be stabilizer shock going bad,
All the bolts tight on the lift? Only left then would be tie rods ends, u-joints and ball joints

Is that u-joint in the video wiggling?

Start grabbing things while she turns the wheel to narrow it down. If you can feel it in the steering wheel you should be able to feel where it's coming from.

Will look into these, guys.

The dealership said everything was tight. Keep in mind, she only has 6000 miles on her!

I'll have her do this while I am under there again...

try greasing your steering shaft, under the boot.. It seems to be a common issue.. Once greased properly the thunk sound goes away. The temperature seems to make a difference.. which may be why you hear it sometimes. When the grease in the boot gets too thin from the heat of your motor or ambient temps, you'll start hearing the clunk sound.

Figured it out!!! Trackbar bolt is looseband whole bar is shifting slightly as wife turns the wheel....will tighten tonight!

Shouldn't be a precursor because you found it now. But if the hole is wallowed that needs to be addressed.

Is this typically a warranty covered item if the track bar needs to be replaced?

So, I just crawled under the Jeep. The bolt and nut are TIGHT. I didn't get a socket on them, but you can just tell. Ideas? Is this the precursor to the infamous DW?

Like I said earlier it won't be a precursor if you fix it because you found it now before DW.

Remove the bolt and examine the hole. If it is out of round, one fix is to have a pair of heavy thick washers welded to each side of the trackbar mount.

If the hole is still round, reinstall bolt and nut and torque to 125 ft lbs. Also check the bolt and hole on the axle end.

If you are going to be under there, you might as well replace the bolts with a 9/16 with a proper length shank now before the threads on the others eat up the bracket.

So....if I take this to my local friendly dealership....will they:

1. Blame my lift and not cover it (even though the trackbar is factory)
2. Fix it, but replace with the original diameter bolt/nut combo
3. Fix it, but use the correct (9/16th) bolt?
4. Try to sell me a 2013 Rubi 4 door?

On 2012s and newer a 9/16 bolt will not fit in the trackbar on the frame side.
All a dealer tech may do is check the bolt to make sure its tight. A salesperson may try to sell you a new Jeep.

Remove the bolt and examine the hole. If it is out of round, one fix is to have a pair of heavy thick washers welded to each side of the trackbar mount.

If the hole is still round, reinstall bolt and nut and torque to 125 ft lbs. Also check the bolt and hole on the axle end.
