Need help with soft top

Ok,

So this seems like it shouldn't be this hard but I cannot get the retainers on the side of the soft top to attach. Pictures are attached.

Anyone have a answer? It almost seems like it is not compatible.

I can't quite tell from the photos, do you have the standard door surrounds? Those plastic tabs should curve under the edge of the door surrounds & stick up into a channel in the surrounds.

It looks to me like the wire that runs throught the edge of the top has flipped up. Unhook the latches, release the tension a bit and flip the edges downward then rehook the latches.

Done all that. The problem seems to be too much tension. Also it being a new top. Logic was to have it all put together and let it sit a few days then try to get them into the channel.

Sorry, in the picture, that had not yet been done.

Set the Jeep in the sun for an hour. The new tops are very hard to get on if cold.

I am not understanding what you mean by it wasn't done? I hadn't stuck the part in the channel because that is the problem. Also there is no wire on my top.

101 here where I live so I am not worried with the cold. Lol

Unless I'm way wrong here (and my Jeep top isn't on right) those plastic tabs are just stiffners and they do not clip into the sill above the door. That's just a door sill to chanel rain away from the top of the door. The only thing than keeps the seal above the door frame and soft top is the tension of the top when latched down.

It's designed like that so you can flip back the sunrider top quickly and without having to pull anything out of a channel like you have to do with the side windows. The top above the doors is NOT attached the same way as the side windows, it just lays flat over the door frame that's attached to the roll bar.

Of course I'm talking about a 2012 2door Jeep with the sunrider top option.

Try undoing the front clips, dropping the trim into the channel, then latching the front clips. This always worked on my tj. Like starting the zippers before putting the window trim in.

Exactly. They just flip over and ride just above that metal channel in your picture. My comments are for a '12 JK with the Sunrider. I have a wire along with those stiffeners. I appologize if my comments don't apply.

Ditto--the sides just rest on top of those stabilizers. No fastening required over the doors.

So your saying this applies to a 2012 JKU?

I'm sorry, but I have the two door so I'm not up to speed with the 4 door models.

However, if it has the Sunrider option where you can fold back the portion of the top over the front seats then I'm pretty sure the sides just sits on the door frame and don't "clip" into anything. All you need to do is unlatch it at the windshield header, slide the two bar locks to the open position and fold back....again that's how the 2door works.

So the owners manual is useless on this issue, but watch the first step that is performed in this video. They remove the part from the sill of the door. This is the piece that will not stay in place. Also the dealership agreed that this is installed and stated that the service department employees that install the soft tops say this is the single item that takes them the longest to properly install at the dealership.

I'm going to give it a try, even though I have a JK. It looks like the top over the driver rides above the channel as we have been saying, and that the top over the back seat will clip into the rails much like the front of the side panels do.

One thing that is true, is that you need to reverse the order exactly, so when you are trying to place the top over both sets of doors, the windows need to be out, and the sail panels not yet attached.

As an aside, when JUST opening the sunrider, DO NOT pinch the clips midway back over the drivers/passengers door. If you do, the entire top will have to be loosened in order to get it to close. Yes, I speak from experience.

Spoke with the dealer today. Tomorrow afternoon I am taking it to service and the guy is going to show me how to get it in place. I will post results.

Ok. Well the people that posted information about a cable, it all makes sense now.

Went to the dealer's service department. After proving them wrong on every idea they had WHY it was NOT fitting they decided to go look at a new factory installed one in the lot.

The top they sold me, not the hardware, just the canvas top was not compatible because the top had some form of plastic retainers not a cable system.

Fortunately the dealer removed the old top, took the top off the one in the lot and all is good.
