i racked my brain over a week on what to go with. i was really going to leave it alone. but i went with the smittybilt polished aluminum inserts. i wanted something different than black. being the jeep is silver, i got positive posts that they look good. they attach behind the grille.

Why does this Jeep have 20" Chrome rims/low pro's on one side and mud tires with standard wheels on the other!??!
Lol, had a good laugh this morning. Thank you.

My reasoning is that it is extremely well made out of quality materials. I'm intending this to be a permanent addition to my Jeep.
-an investment, if you will.
That thing is huge, will strengthen the plastic grill, and looks like it will need little or no further attention after being installed.
That's what I like about it.
Just a bit too expensive for me. Thanks for the feed back though! I am sure it'll be better material than anything I'm looking at : /

Hmm, those are very different. I do like them, I'm just going with the cliche black though

These are looking very appealing. I am wanted to DIY so bad though. We'll see....I'll end up posting up what I get.

Innovative idea. Perhaps the owner was a little short on cash and was doing one side at a time. Or, the most likely reason was that the owner was trying to cover both sides of the mall pavement at one time, the clear flat dry asphalt on the passenger side and the wet dirty part that the mall sweeper missed on the driver's side.

I installed the Rugged Ridge inserts this morning. Took about 45 mins. Didn't even take the grill off to do it. I went with black because that's what I like and I'm the only one that has to like the look of my Jeep. So go with the look you want and like.

It doesn't matter to me that one guy thinks they look gay. I would rather not be on the road and have a stone put my tranny cooler or radiator out of commission.

If it's predictable,,, it is preventable.

It is a simple fix. I'm not sure if I'll keep it this color or plasti dip it black.

People that buy this shit drive Jeeps like this...
Nope. Quite serious, sorry.
I don't mind saving my pennies up for stuff I like. I like to play the long game.
Interesting that the willingness to drop a little coin on a mod would bring such a strong reaction from someone, especially considering the wide range of choices that folks seem to make with Jeeps.

It would be very easy to point out the potential shortcomings to any way of doing this modification: I chose an option with shortcomings I can live with that don't involve engineering compromises. It's my thing, whatever.

I would point out that a plastic grill kinda stands to benefit the most from a formed metal backer of some kind.

If I still had access to a decent sheet metal shop I'd be inclined to fabricate my own, but I'd still have a devil of a time forming the metal to fit into the slots properly. I'll pay for details like that.

I totally hear ya, but truly the slots let a lot of larger stuff through to impact the rads. I thought it was a useless cosmetic-only mod until I saw the dings in mine.
As a mod it does have some merit.

You are right. Mine is only 15 months old, but has done a lot of highway driving. The a/c condensor has quite a few very noticeable dents in the fins. Time for grille inserts before something disables the air conditioning.

I have the metalcrafters and although pricey was worth it to me. I think it looks great and will hold up the best. I recommend it but certainly understand why others would think its crazy to spend that much.

for $289 I don't doubt a thing you just said...but I can't drop the $$$ for that at the moment and I want something to keep larger sized rocks and grasshoppers out of my radiator (not kidding, the grasshoppers in texas are bigger than my fingers). I don't think it's fair to my jeep being so exposed.

The Rugged Ridge Inserts are formed to fit into the slots. Its very stiff and hard to bend. Should do the trick to keep rocks/big bugs/grasshoppers out. Very impressed for the price. Just a bit more than DIY, but worth way more in quality IMO.

I'm sure that's what she meant. Matter of fact while I was looking at the pictures of grill inserts, all I could think of was "George Clooney sure is hot!"

A cheap version from Amazon: Amazon.com: Jeep Wrangler JK BLACK Mesh Grille Insert Kit 07-12: Automotive

I have the "cheap version" and the paint started coming off after only 4 months. Might be fine if you don't care about how they look, but I do.

I bought the inexpensive 1 piece mesh grill by Rugged Ridge from Morris 4x4 for $44, we'll see how it looks installed but I am far too lazy to cut and install all those individual pieces if I were to buy gutter guard or something. I am not worried about paint flecking off since all I want it to do is stop rocks from denting my radiator, and maybe keep the slew of leaves out of there that collect during fall. Since I ordered the grill guard I have been getting alot of compliments on my hair from men... MickeYJ may be onto something.

BobH: those are the Rugged Ridge. I have them and they are awesome! Waaaaay better quality than DIY. ABout $50 on Amazon w/free shipping! 15 minute install once grill is off and no fear of it falling off. I added 4 white tabs, but not needed.

Probably for a photo shoot. Lo-pro's with chromies on one side for the chrome grille inserts; mud tires with black rims for the grille insert shot before or after this photo. Lazy, IMO.

Or Dr. Jekyll bought a Jeep.

The first looks like it might go on a Buick, Just my opinion! DIY I used epoxy instead of the double sided tape, It is as strong as the grill!

I installed the Metalcrafters a couple weeks ago. It was a little more that I thought I would spend, but I'm glad I did after seeing the quality and the easy installation. I would say to install the insert before you put a Power Plant winch on. The grill will not come completely off with this winch on. Luckily as a woman I have small hands and was able to get the insert all the way in without removing or loosening the winch. Not the best photo, but I really like it with the Orange Crush.
