Need soft top

Hey, just purchased a 2008 Wrangler......new jeep owner and very excited.....Jeep came with hard top only and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about the kind of top I need to buy for the summer. Thanks for your help....

By the way, it is a 2 door X (Trail Rated)......dont know if that matters

check quadratec.com and lots of other 4x4 shops online. Tons of options available. When you decide what you want, you may find it on ebay or craigslist. You are the only person who can decide what you need/want.... depends on how you plan to use it. Two door Jk is all you need to know as far as what to buy.

Welcome to the forum, and don't forget to wave ......

Hey Bleacherbum:

I'd recommend stopping at a bookstore and getting the Jeep catalogs from Quadratec, JC Whitney and 4WD. (you can get them sent for free, but I'm impatient).

You can use the web sites too, of course, but I find the book easier to flip through and compare.

That'll give you a good idea of what's on the market, and price points.

Check out our site at Tops and Accessories for Jeep & GM, Ford, Dodge Trucks by Bestop, of course, to make sure the top you like is available for your vehicle, etc.

And ask questions once you've narrowed your choices down!

If you have specific

Same thing here, on the lookout for a soft top. What's "trail rated" by the way?

I am wondering about the Trektop. I have a 4dr jk with a hard top so I need the bows and all. The trektop is cheaper but i'm wondering if it is as tight as the Sunrider.

Trail Rated is just a slogan Jeep came up with to show off their trail abilities, and to separate their true "off roaders" from soft road vehicles, like the Jeep Compass. All Wranglers are "trail rated."

Weatherproofing and "tightness" would be very similar. The Trektop side windows do not zip out, and it doesn't use support bows, so it doesn't fold down as neatly in the back. You can flip the top back, like a Sunrider, and you can open the tailgate normally. Trektop comes with all the door surrounds and other hardware that you would need.

There are other threads here with lots of Trektop reviews.

Hey, I've got a factory top for sale - 400 bucks buys it - you pay shipping.

It was on it when I bought it new and we put it on once for about a week and decided we'd stick with the hard top.

FYI- As dumb as it sounds, There were actually a few non 4 wheel drive wranglers produced in 2008 and into 2009 that are not trail rated. I know,... what's the point of a 2 wheel drive jeep? But then again I don't understand spinners on a jeep either, so there ya go.

Besides mntnclmbr, which is BY FAR a great deal, do what I did and check out Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market and check those local junkyards for a donor jeep. Got my softtop for $100

Like an abused kid, I've forced any memory of 2-wheel drive Jeeps deep into my subconscious. But you are right. Not every Wrangler is "trail rated."

USED TOPS: Make sure to check if the door surrounds and header bars are included.

If your Jeep came with just the hardtop, you most likely do not have the door surrounds (plastic "wings" next to the door, gives the top something to wrap around, and gives the doors something to shut against). So you'll want aftermarket door surrounds. Some tops don't come with them, and they're expensive. A Bestop aftermarket top will have metal door surrounds, but some people don't include those when they sell the top.

Header bar (fits the top to the windshield) can be purchased separately for not too much money, so is not as big a deal. These usualyl go with the tops, but it's worth asking about.

Good point, but I doubt there are many JK parts in the junkyards just yet.....
