Hey guys! I'm new to this so hope I am doing it right! If this is not where this question should go please let me know!
I am getting ready to upgrade tires and possibly rims on my jeep and add a tad bit more lift! I want a good off road tire that can handle rock climbing, mud, etc. but my jeep is also my daily driver and i tend to travel alot between my commute to work and road trips (Jeep is only 14 months old and already has 20,500 miles on it) so i need one that is going to hold up well on the road too. Thinking somewhere around 37s on size.
37's? You have a lift? You can't rock crawl without rubbing, or do much of anything, with 37's on a stock Jeep. You might want to read this before you get ahead of yourself.
flyfishnevada: No, i do not have 37s on it currently. I may be a girl but im not stupid. i'm looking at going up to 37s. My lift is being put on at the same time as the new tires.
Thanks josephtessaro flyfishnevada: No, i do not have 37s on it currently. I may be a girl but im not stupid. i'm looking at going up to 37s. My lift is being put on at the same time as the new tires.
Whoa slow down. You said up to 37s in your post and I interpreted it exactly like flyfish. He wasn't saying you were stupid or make any gender specific references. Just offering the advice you were asking for.
Sorry meant that as a joke. guess i should have put a smiley face. Actually in my post at the beginning it says im looking at upgrading tires, rims and add more of a lift. thinking somewhere around 37s. as in thats what i want to go with. that is not what i am currently running with.
2014 Rubicon. Automatic. 4:1 Rock - Trac Part Time 4WD System 4.10 Axle Ratio. Next Generation Dana 44 Heavy duty in front and rear. Tru-lok Front and Rear Axles. Most likely adding a 3.5" short arm lift with Bilstien 5100 shocks. Currently has a 2" lift on 32" from the factory.
What lift do you have now? Running 37" tires requires a much larger wallet than running 35's. I personally like low center of gravity Jeeps, but that's me. You can run 37's with a 2.5" lift and some flat fenders, but you're gonna need to beef everything up so you don't break anything.
How much do you off-road and what type of experience do you have? If this is your DD and it was me, I'd stick to 35's. But that's just me.
Just the 2" lift that is stock from the factory on rubicons running 32s. going to add a 3.5" short arm lift. not going any higher than that. will be adding XRC body armor and fenders when i put on the lift and tires. also upgrading the shocks at the same time. I found a 35 i did like alot so i am starting to lean more towards that. really just looking for good brands that are known to last. rims are 17" and trying to stick with those for the time being. i have a good bit of off roading experience but not by any means a expert. mostly wood trails and beach stuff ... mudding when i can of course.
First, your Rubicon doesn't have a lift from the factory. It just uses different springs than the Sport or Sahara.
Second, why 3.5"? You can run 35's or 37's with a 2.5" lift and flat fenders with zero issues.
Third, for tires I'd look at Duratracs. They aren't the best mud tire in the world, but when you're using it as a DD putting 20k miles a year on you'll probably want an aggressive off road/street tire. Duratracs do pretty damn well in all occasions.
If you're not going over huge boulders I'd stick with 35's. Id also not go taller than 2.5" with a DD. But again, not my Jeep, not my money. Just my opinion.
Check out Toyo Open Country R/T they come with a tread wear warranty. They also come with the M/Ts sidewall. I wish I would of gotten these instead of the M/Ts
So mine actually did come with a 2" stock lift. had nothing to do with spring. my dad has a 2012 sport my step brother has a 2007 Sahara and my little brother has a 88 Comanche. mine sits higher off the show room floor then both the sport and Sahara. plus my dad and both brothers crawled under to see what mods I would have to do when i was ready to upgrade and all 3 confirmed it did have a lift on it.
a 3.5 lift because thats the smallest i can go in the short arm i want through the shop that will be putting on the lift, tires, body armor, and rock slider side steps. not to mention i want a 3.5" lift. i would like some extra ground clearance as i am still learning and would like to give myself a little extra wiggle room.
just found the goodyear wrangler 35" with Kevlar which i am liking alot. may just go that route.

Seeing as you don't need advice and you have the only Rubicon in the history of Jeeps to come from the factory with a 2" lift don't bother reading the lift threads here.
What 3.5" lift is this shop telling you to buy and why is that the shortest lift they are offering you?
Also, I'm assuming you have a 2 door? If that's the case and you don't have steel bumpers and a winch and armor you're likely to get closer to 4-5" of lift out of that 3.5" kit. Just as an FYI.
If you have a 4 door, you'll probably get closer to 4" of lift.
dude first of all you dont have to be an ass. i wasnt asking for advice on my lift or the type of jeep i have. i was simply asking what tire brands are good for both. no one else seems to feel the need to argue with me over what my jeep does or does not currently have. i appreciate all the advice i get but dont tell me what i do or dont have on the vehicle that I drive everyday. Unless you were sitting in texas when i bought it then drop the attitude. i may not know everything but when it comes to that kinda money i do my research. mine has the upgraded tire package which requires a automatic lift so back off.
Well missy, I suggest you re-read your first post. You said you were "new to this" and I was trying to be helpful. Often times people believe they need xyz for certain things to work. You mentioned getting a 3.5" lift and I was simply trying to let you know that it's not needed and in fact can come back to bite you in your sensitive little ass when you go that high, especially if it's not a high quality lift.
Please explain to me what upgraded tire package you got that requires an automatic lift. I thought you had a rubicon? There is no upgraded tire package from Chrysler for the Rubicon. Or was this a tire package from the dealer? And did the dealer install this 2" lift? I'm confused more and more every time you post.
I suggest you relax and not come off like you know it all when you came here asking for help. If you don't want to listen then don't post looking for help.
i actually DO have a 4 door. I do have a steel bumper with a winch. and as a said before the body armor is being installed when the lift and tires are done. again was not asking for advice on the lift. thanks.
Ok. If you DO have a 4 door than you'll get closer to 3.5.
I know you know everything and you don't need advice, because you clearly have everything sorted out...but don't forget upgrading that rear tire carrier too. Otherwise you'll probably end up breaking it.
Um why dont YOU do go and read my original post. the "new to this" was talking about being on a forum! hince why it was followed up by if i did not post this in the right place please let me know & separated from my actual question. There is a difference between acting like i know it all which I am not and knowing what is on the vehicle i paid 43,000 bucks for! .... i'm not dead set on a 3.5" lift! Right now its just want I am leaning towards & due to wanting a short arm and the particular shop I am going through that is currently what I am playing around with. I could very well change my mind later down the road. Mopar does offer a 2" lift and it will gladly be posted below. This was already installed on my jeep when I bought it. I do not know if it was a dealer choice or not. Just know it was on there.

I re-read your original post and I'm still in the same spot I was 45 minutes ago. I'm utterly confused on what you have, although now I know you have a 2" lift.
So you have a Rubicon with a mopar lift that has stock tires and wheels? That seems like an odd dealer install. Usually they add 35" tires to that. Did you buy this used or now?
FWIW - that 2" lift will work just fine with 35's. What 3.5" lift are you looking at and why is a shop telling you (or you're assuming) that a 3.5" lift is required? That's a lot of lift that can bring up a lot of issues if not done properly.
Lose the attitude when you come here asking for help. Like Star said, if we had a dollar for every time a new person came in her looking for lift and tire advice we would all be rich. If you come off like an ass, you'll be treated like one. I was only trying to help you. I'm sorry if I came off like a jerk, and I hope this is the end of the back and forth banter. Now if you'll kindly answer some of the questions I and others have asked we will be more than happy to help you. If you don't want help and want to give off an attitude like you (or this shop) know everything than don't post. It's that simple.
You've been given a couple options on tires from myself and a couple other members. I'd research what was recommended and research those Kevlar tires. Some people really like them, but I know 2 guys that have used those exact tires and switches to either Duratracs or Bajas.
If you need help posting pics do a search on here. There are a couple threads that will walk you thru the steps on posting pics depending on what device you're using.
From reading your original post, it is very confusing.
From the factory, Rubicons do NOT come with a lift.
From your last post it is evident that the dealer ADDED a 2" MOPAR lift, but it doesn't come like that from the factory.
We get a TON of people here all the time who talk about adding huge tires and monster lifts, without having any idea what that kind of work entails. Or we get people who have offed their jeeps without asking first, then come here whining about why their jeep now SUCKS.
Sounds like the guys were just trying to give you MORE information than was necessary, since you said you were new. Keviper wasn't trying to be an :mooning: Just for the sake of being an :mooning:. We spent SO much time in researching jeeps before we bought them, we try to help out new members. Most of us know hat the factory does not install lifts. We're not trying to be know it alls, it's just a fact that there are no factory lifts. There are some dealers who will pass on a dealer installed kit as factory to someone who doesn't know the difference, which it seems like you were. Not knocking you or your knowledge, it's just the way it is, but led to keviper replying as he did.
Again, the guys were trying to help TOO much out of concern, not maliciousness. Sarcasm, teasing and joking is impossible to tell here without the use of emoticons. I, personally, like to use them a lot; probably too much!
Now I've typed so long I can't remember what your original question was. :rofl2:
The picture attached below in the parking lot with the stock bumper is the day i bought it. The others are it now. to me stock is when the parts and add ons are made by mopar and installed on the vehicle at time of purchase. anything not considered mopar is after market. guess it is just a difference in wording. i do think though that there is a difference in trying to help someone and trying to talk someone down. attitude didnt kick in until i started being called names. sorry for getting defensive.
Dealers like to play those games, installing other parts on a new vehicle and allowing people to think it is still 'stock'. But I bet if you took it to a different dealership with a warranty issue having to do with the lift, they'd tell you it's not covered under your factory warranty, and that you'd have to take it back to the original dealer to have them fix it under their dealership warranty, if it even comes with one.
Mommymallcrawler's given you some good advice. She's definitely building her jeep to be more of a crawler than mine will EVER be, and she's got the benefit of a better half (right, MMC? ) who is a rock junkie and knows all the mechanics and has the experience to guide her correctly. :thumb:
You are getting a little defensive - folks here are just trying to help you. This is one of the most helpful forums out here on the web.
I am a girl too. I have 37s. I crawl boulders. It is also my DD, but my daily commute is like 6 miles each way on surface streets. With the pavement mileage you are driving, you may want to put a lot more thought into it before committing to 37s.
MTs (mud tires) are not going to last or ride like AT tires (all terrain, street type). At $400+/- a pop. If playing on rocks, sidewall is important.
You could swap out to flat fenders, trim you air dam and probably be fine for 35s with the lift you have. Again not the best combo for high mileage street driving, but would be better than 37s. But since you drive a limo (4 doors), you will be spending a lot of your offroad rock crawling life sitting on your belly and/or high centered, especially time sitting on the gas skid, so you may want to swap out for more lift even on 35s. It wont give more diff clearance, but will give belly clearance. But higher lifts bring other issues and expense.
Your 4.10s will be ok on the street. But if you really want to crawl rocks, look to 4.88 or 5.13 gearing for 37s (4.56 or 4.88 for 35s).
If crawling rocks, you are definitely going to want to look into hydroassist steering. For sure. Will run somewhere $2500-3000ish with install. And for sure get your axles trussed and gusseted before you hit the trails. The D44 is not factory spec to run 37s, so you need to reinforce it.
I run a 2.5 inch lift with chopped fenders. Nitto Trail Grapplers 37x12.5x17. The Nitto is a heavy tire tho - which you may not appreciate on pavement. Lots of folks on WF like Duratracs - we have a few folks local who run those on the rocks. Not the best rock tire, but with your high pavement mileage, you want to lean on the better side of street performance vs trail performance.
Lol! My better half has been absolutely invaluable in helping with planning my build. He has a big Jeep too so I also get the benefit of his experiences. And he even bought me my own tool set so I can start learning how to do some stuff myself.
I'm getting new wheels and tires this week on my stock sahara. I found some tires that I'm really impressed with after doing some research on them. Mickey thompson Baja mtz. They're aggressive looking and have a lot of benefits to off road and street driving. My jeep is my DD also. another tire I was impressed with and i have previously owned and I would reccomend any day are cooper tires. Either the cooper discover stt or st maxx looks really good on jeeps.
