Negotiating different tires when buying a new jeep

Greetings all! I've been stalking this forum for the past year and am finally ready to pull the trigger and join the jeep nation! I am going to buy a new jku sport s, black, manual, duel top, convenience pkg, max tow, and alpine stereo in the next few weeks. I'm pretty good at the buying game, however I really want different tires, specifically duratracs 285/70 17. From what I can find, those should fit fine on the stock suspension as long as I put in 1.5" spacers. The question I have is: does anyone have experience negotiating new tires when buying a new vehicle? Do dealers work this kind of deal? Any reimbursement for the stock tires? What's the best approach to haggling this type of deal? I'm afraid if I don't get the tires when I get the vehicle, the wife won't let me until I actually need new tires. Thanks for your help and I'm excited to finally get my very own jeep !

You'd probably do best selling your old tires on Craigslist, but if that isn't a good plan for you, then it's worth noting that aftermarket tire shops will usually give you a credit for your old tires. You should call a few and get some quotes, then ask your dealer to see of they can beat the best quote. If not, make the arrangements to drive straight to the tire shop once you pick up the jeep.

When I bought my 2013 JKUS with 255/70/17 I didn't negotiate for 285 70/17 tires, but I told them that I wouldn't buy the vehicle if I didn't get the Rubicon tires (BFG) on the vehicle. I walked out of that dealership twice before buying the Jeep. I didn't get any refund for the old ones, but I didn't pay any extra for the new ones either (at least it wasn't listed as additional item). Maybe looking back, I should not have taken the Rubicon tires and should have gone straight to an outside tire place to get more options, but I am happy with the deal and with the Rubicon tires. They do everything I need them to do, look great and run great.

That may be the most cost effective option. The rubicon tires do look great and I wouldn't have to worry about spacers or any rubbing. I'll throw this to the dealer and see what happens! Do you have any other pics of your jeep with the rubi tires?

My dealer let me know up front and firmly that I needed to work a tire exchange through a reputable tire store. The reason I was given was that he, the dealer, could not give me nearly as good a deal. So I'm sure it depends on the dealer. In my case they sell the full Chrysler stable and Jeeps are only a little part, so their demand for takeoffs is nearly zero.

When I worked for a tire shop decades ago, it was common practice for many of the auto dealers to assist in making arrangements for "new take-offs" to be traded for whatever the purchaser chose.

There were a raft of individual deals made at those various dealers, but the tire-shop AND the dealer always made a buck or two on the deal.

Even then, the customer that came out with 'the best deal' for out of pocket OR hidden charges, was the one that actually wanted the dreaded road-treads or the OEM sized traction tires.

"The Art of the Deal" is little different whether tires, Jeeps or most any consumer purchase.

Usually those making a deal with the tire company, would seal in some kind of inclusive service down the road, such as flats/balances/seasonal switches. Gave everybody the opportunity to get what they wanted.

Yes, they do look great and since I am not a hardcore wheeler they are absolutely sufficient for what I do. Here are some more pictures. I have the Rancho 2" Sport suspension with the 9000XL shock on order, hopefully that will come next week.

My dealer did a swap to the BFG KM 32" tires on our '09 JKU X for $500. That turned out to be about $200 less than a tire shop was going to do the deal. Your mileage may vary.
