New Jeep Owner Engine Question

Just bought a 2014 JKS and was just curious about the engine. What's the major differences between the engine I have and in years past? In 2010 was it not a 3.8 L? Which engine is better? The sales guy was trying to tell me the new engine is basically the best jeep has ever put out and that it's ranked in the top 10 best/most reliable engines. Is any of this true or was he just selling me a jeep? I've always known jeeps to be pretty bullet proof from what I've heard from friends etc...

I just want to be educated on my new toy :-)

Thanks in advance for the lesson!

It's true that it is the best engine ever in a wrangler. It did also win some awards but honestly, it's still to new to really know the long term reliability.

More horsepower and torque over a wider RPM range. Better gas mileage. Lower weight, fewer parts .... lots more.

Well, for starters it has 285 horses and 260 lb-ft of torque.

The old 3.8 had 215 hp with 245 lb-ft torque.

The 3.8 is known to eat oil and is pretty slow with the 4spd auto. The 3.6 is more efficient, more powerful, and you get a much better 5 speed automatic (if you're into autos). The 2012 MY eats cylinder heads, but the warranty on that is extended to 150k, so nothing to worry about. Otherwise, there are relatively minor and rare issues with the Pentastar that include water pump bearings, casting sand in the heater core, and cracked oil cooler housings.

The interior and tops are also much better on the 2011+ (although the 2011 has the older powertrain).

I decided on buying a new Wrangler instead of a 3-4 year old used one because of the Pentastar engine.

Same here...especially since a new one was the same price as used!

Yeah, I would have considered a used JK but the 2012's and up are almost as much as new and to save any money you have to get a 2007 to 2011 and didn't want the minivan engine. Glad I got the 3.6.
