New Jeep owner with lots of questions

Over the weekend my wife and I purchased a 2010 Jeep Wrangler Sport unlimited to be used as her daily driver/toy. I have always been a pickup guy but after my trip to CO last summer I came back with Jeep fever. Seeing how it is used as a daily driver it has a serious lack of passing power. I was thinking about doing the basic three performance additions. Those being, intake, exhaust, and programmer. There are many of these and some work better together in combination. I was looking for advice as to which ones work the best and what other are running. Thanks in advance.

If it's an automatic, the programmer will help. The rest is just a waste of money.

Yeah, a free flowing exhaust and intake are just a waste of money.


The internal combustion motor is, in the most basic form, an air movement machine. The more effeciently you can move in/out, the more power your motor will make while using less fuel.

Granted, you don't need to supercharge or turbo or cam your motor, but spending $150 on a K&N air filter and a free flowing muffler/cat will be worth the money spent. Period.

I totally disagree with my fellow Jeepsters above. Having riden Harley's most of my life, I know what forced air and free flowing exhausts can do. Recently purchased a 2010 Wrangler Sport and immediatley installed 33x12.5 tires on 17 inch rims. Needless to say, I lost power and MPG. First added Superchips Flashpaq and noticed an increase in low end power. Still not being satisfied, I added a K & N CAI and MBPR performance exhausts. Even the Tech who drove my Jeep with just the Superchip, agreed that the CAI and exhaust really woke it up. So no I don't think they are a waste of money.

What is the price of one of those chips, where do you get it, how does it effect mpg, etc.

I have several friends with JKs, and those with the autos as well as the folks with the stick said that the Hypertech programmer made a night and day difference in the performance of their Jeeps. Some of them are former 1/4 mile racers.

They brag about Increased performance on the highway, and better MPG.

They use the dual trail/highway settings and are tickled pink with their programmers.

The programmers seem to do a lot for the JK, not so much for the TJ though. damnit!

Actually, if you go out and read thread after thread after thread on any number of boards you will find that the general consensus is that on the JEEP, the CAI is not worth the money spent for the gains received. Sure you can find a few that think they are the berries, but the majority of Jeep owners that have them (from what I have read and heard first hand) say they are just not worth the money.

Then to address the K&N filter. On a street vehicle, it's one thing. But on a vehicle that gets out in the dust and crud that these Jeeps do, it's asking for trouble. The K&N does NOT filter as well as say a WIX Gold filter and after repeated cleanings, becomes less and less efficient thereby allowing more and more dirt into your engine and we ALL know what happens then.

I'm thinking about going the superchip route also. I've never chipped before and know there are risks. Anyone have any horror stories?
Also, I hate to void my warranty with the chip, how many of you are putting chips on new jeeps?

Thanks for the info.I guess I will go the Hypertech route first. I also have a 2008 F150 FX4 with a intake, exhaust, and programmer with custom tunes. Its my experience that the programmers are safe and dont harm the vehicle. As for the warranty issue. I return my pickup to stock when taking it into the dealership.

I'm still researching things and the warranty issue was my main concern. How easy is it to return to stock for scheduled maintenance, etc...with the superchip?

It looks like the Superchip is designed more for off road use. I just want something that will help me on the short highway entrance ramps. i feel like I'm going to get run over. If my Jeep was used solely for off road I wouldnt mess with it.
It is very easy to return these back to stock. It takes less than 2 minutes.

Well I don't really understand your point here. Nobody was asking for porsche performance but whatever...

I hear what you're saying about ramps. I'm in northeastern TN and every oher ramp is a hill and chances are you're probably on a hill once you get on the interstate. After driving a 5 speed before this, the automatic is a bit sluggish.

The superchips is a programmer, not a chip! It most certainly is an improvement both in the dirt, and on the street. When I put bigger tires on, my JKU was a dog. Constantly downshifting to stay at highway speeds on flat ground. Forget it on hills. The interstate... well, I avoided it at all costs. Enter the Superchips... I use the 91 octane tune for street, and the crawl tune for offroading. My AVG hand calculated MPG is 18.2 with mostly in town driving. Spent all day trailriding yesterday on moderately difficult trails and lots of mud, and got 15.1 MPG. I am running the stock 4.10 gears and am very happy with the performance and milage now.

IMHO, a CAI on a Jeep that has the potential to see off road use is a bad idea for the reasons previously described... dirt and water! Get a snorkel! Benefits would be actual cold air in, and the air coming from a higher point lessens the possibility of hydrolocking your engine. AEV makes one with a prefilter to help with dust, if that's a problem where you live. Personally, I am saving my shekels for a River Raider.

Put it on a dyno; you'll lose your woody.

Sample your oil now with a lab like Blackstone and sample it after 6000 miles with a K&N filter. Let them show you the incredible amount of silicates introduced to your engine via your "upgrade".

Clever lad; sounds alot like me...

I'd go so far as to say that the JK would work quite well with a comprehensive kit that included gears, tires, Flashpaq tune, AEV snorkel, and MBRP exhaust. I think you'd have a clean happy motor and a couple more ponies. It would especially reward you on hot offroad days.
