New Jeep Owners 2013 and 2014 **BEWARE**

I have a 2013 2 door with a soft top. The jeep has about 8000 miles on it.

During steady rain storms(whiche we dont have many here thank god) the seams on the back of the top will leak. This si the rear seam above the rear window and the seams that are on the rear sail flaps.

These seams have a white thin backing. During a steady rain after about 30 minutes the seams become water soaked and the white backing becomes soaked and will start to drip.

The dealship replaced the top under warranty once but the replacement top did the same thing.

I took it back to the dealer during a rare winter rain day here in Tucson and showed the Service manager. He was surprised the new top was leaking in the same spots.

W checked a 2007 wrangler tha was on the lot. No leaks. We then checked a 2014 that was being unloaded from a transport truck. It was leaking in the same sposts as mine and the carpet on the rear deck was soaked!

The dealership contacted Chrysler engineers for a fix. Several weeks later they came back with an answer - NO FIX.

To me this is absolute bull. No $30,000 Jeep should have a leaky soft top.

So if your buying a new jeep and live where it rains frequently - get a hard top.

Now some of you dont care if a jeep leaks....so this is for those who dont want a leaky Jeep.

I spoke to the sales manager at the dealership..he told me when the engineers say "No Fix" theres usually a recall down the road.

If the problem is with the standard it might make a very good argument to have it replaced with a Premium by Jeep and the Dealership.

So what about some spray on water proofing in that area to see if it helps

That would be very helpful information for many of us here. Is it on your paperwork from the dealership, or would they be able to provide the information for you to share?

I have a regular soft top on my '14. Picked it up in October. About three weeks later, we got like 8 hours of rain. Bone dry inside.

The premium is much "blacker" and looks more like a cloth top. You would know if you have it because you would have paid more for it. I have the standard sunrider on my 09 and that has never leaked either.

I have the dual top group with the premium soft top, it doesn't leak but the hard top does....so im not sure if saying get a hard top is the best idea for staying dry lol! I think they have issues with both tops and you are right....no 30k plus dollar vehicle should leak regardless of what top is on it IMO!

If you wanted a $30,000 vehicle that acted like every other $30,000 vehicle you should've bought a different $30,000 vehicle.

I love it when people say "I paid $XX,XXX for this and it

1) Shouldn't Leak
2) Shouldn't Creek
3) Shouldn't Be slow
4) Shouldn't Handle oddly
5) Should have a gas door
6) Should have a USB port because other base models do!
7) Shouldn't get mediocre MPG
8) Should be a boring econobox with no personality"

Anyone spending any amount of money on a Wrangler should know well before hand how quarky and different they can be. That's why most of us love them.

The OP warns that if you live where it rains, get a hard top. Implying that people don't complain about the hard top leaking too.

Umm... what ? Not everyone falls for the "It's a jeep thing". If Jeep wants to charge in the price range of other SUV's then they need to be held to the same standard. This is Jeep number 6 for me so I understand Jeeps but in the past Jeeps were at a lower price point.

I have been lucky and I haven't had a problem with leaks but when you can buy an aftermarket top that has far fewer problems with leaks you would expect the manufacturer could do the same.

Baught a new to me 08 jkuR came with hard top.. 3 months later realized hard top leakes by the drivers a pillar .. Tried a few things to no fix yet.. Pulled the carpet some surface rust on drivers floor pan 3-4 hours later sanded.. Rust-o-leumed.. Will throw the carpet on at some point and give up on it... Whatever as long as it does t rain inside and on my mygig im good..

I came to terms that stuff is just normal with jeeps.. If something can go wrong with their accessory design it will go wrong .. Both soft and hard tops leak eventually..
If i had purchased new or cpo then i would be fighting for a free fix/replacement but in all honesty coming from a mercedes benz e-class into a jeep jk is a big difference but you learn to embrace it and chalk it up to whatever you want to make you feel better lol

That's implying here that the Wrangler is your basic SUV.

I guess the Porsche Cayenne and the Yukon Denali should be held to the same standard too since they're both SUVs in the same price bracket, despite being completely different in form and function.

I agree.....this is not "A Jeep thing"! This is plain lack of quality for the most part IMO....I don't care if i were to spend 10 or 30k for a new vehicle....I expect it to be a quality product for the price I paid...Just because its a Jeep doesn't give it the excuse to be of "poor quality" and even more so at the price point!

Lamborghini Gallardo Spyders leak too. And it costs 10 times what a Jeep does and it STILL leaks.

If anything, you'd think that a hand-crafted $300,000+ vehicle wouldn't leak, but they still do.

I don't even think it's a Jeep thing at this point. I think it's a "Your top is removable, deal with it" thing..

I think the point that is being missed is that some leak and some don't....if there wasn't a problem and all of them leaked then I don't think we would be having this conversation lol.....it's all good though ill do my due dillagence and keep going back in for warranty repairs on my brand new less than 6k mile Jeep (5 different instances so far) and you can just "live" with yours when they happen...

Yup and I'm sure the Lambo owners said " it's just a Lamborghini thing" Like others have said many if not most don't leak so when you buy one and it leaks just suck it up because you lost the Jeep lottery ? Um yeah...no....

Since you at least know where it's leaking. and it's a stitched seem too - why not buy some tent sealer and fix it? Two treatments now, one inside and one outside, and once or twice a year afterwards, and it should be fine.

Uhh... what?

I'm with the OP on this one... if I'm spending $30k+ on a vehicle, it's going to not leak when it has a top on it - a top that is made to stop the outside from coming in, no less - or I'm going to take it back to the dealership until the leak is gone. That is *not* an unreasonable ask.

Not every piece of a Jeep Wrangler's interior is made to be soaked (electronics). Chrysler doesn't market these vehicles saying, "your top will probably leak". Until they do, we should expect that they wont. End of story.

OP - I know you said they replaced your top... but are you 100% positive they did? According to the experiences of many in this thread (and a few of my buddies with 13+ JKs with soft tops), you should not be experiencing a leak.

It's very possible that the dealer told you they replaced the top when in reality they hadn't.
