While I am waiting patiently for my 2015 JKURHR to arrive, I have been searching to forum to be ready in terms of our Great Pyrenees, Ellie, who loves to go for rides.
Is there anything dog related that you wish you would have done right away? There is a lot of good information on cargo netting, which I intent to purchase for certain. This seems to be a good way to protect the soft top windows, but sacrifices some visibility.
Additionally, do people prefer the more expensive metal dividers, or the strap type? Finally, I have no idea what to do in terms of a cargo mat with the speaker in the floor issue to consider.
Any advice, regrets, or particular recommendations?
I use the Raingler cargo nets and they have worked perfect for us. My JKUR came with a rear cargo mat. I also have a moving blanket that I use to protect the leather for those times when our dog rides in the back seat.
Before I picked up my Jeep I bought a liner from canvasback.com to cover the gap when the rear seats are folded. The liner does not keep to dog hair and is easy to vacuum after. When I run with the doors off I put on rear doors from body armor so they don't slide out when driving.
I have a canvasback for my JKU. To secure my two labs, I bought them driving harnesses from pet smart, and bought very study 18 inch long leashes. I used two caribiners per leash to secure the loop of the leash to the tie downs in the floor of the cargo area, then I clip the leash to the harnesses. I never have my rear seat up; the area is always flat for the dogs. My one goofy boy can get his two front feet and a lot of his chest out his window when chatting up the people who stop (rats on this, too, as he has scratched my clear coat there). If I clicked both leashes (one is latched to the left front tie down, the other to the right front) onto one dog, that dog will be securely located in the center of the vehicle, for SURE. They can both hang their heads out when we drive, if I let them, and we are all well positioned for receiving (and me distributing) treats back to them when we drive through at the bank.
That is perfect! Thanks! My dog loves riding in the back with the top down. I always keep the trips short. She's always been really good, but I want a little more security just in case she goes into dumb ass mode and tries to bail.
cool. I just checked out the trenchcovers that otter posted about. To deal with my trench, I just folded up a couple of small cotton throws (blankets) really narrow and built up that area to try to level it. However, it is imperfect. I will consider adding the trench cover to my 2015 Willys.
My dog just chewed through my rear seatbelt...aaaargh.... $405... but for some reason my dealer is replacing it under warranty... :Thanx:
... other than that, I just bought one of these universal barriers for the back for $15 used, and then they are usually harnessed in .I usually have the belts up over the barrier bars where the dogs can't get to them, but the one time.... They looove riding around back there.
A wet hand or brush can get rid of the hair really quick, and definatley flip your cargo mat over. Just protect those seatbelts !!!!!
I took out the back seat, built a dog perch, and a back shelf. Lined the floor with rubber mats, put in an anti-fatigue mat for the dog to sit on, and declared victory.
She loves it.
Homemade windows to give my 2 Labs plenty of room and fresh air in the back. Spare set of windows with the plastic cut out, holes punched and paracord run through the holes.
I wish I'd taken the carpet out, dog hair sticks like glue.
I need those trench covers for my 2012 2 door or something like them. Took the seat out for my Great Dane and he slides down into the well behind the front seats. Hell everything slides into that well!
I came around the corner pulling out of my neighborhood (with the doors off) and my little buddy Scout (lab mix) just fell right out...haha. I was only going about 15 mph and he landed on his feet! He sat perfectly still the rest of the time though.
I have a 130# Akita....makes for a jeep full of dog.
I recommend a chest harness rather than a collar......takes the pressure off the delicate structures in the throat.
I recommend a 4-foot training lead (leash) connected to the harness.
And I recommend one of these "Velcro hang-straps) from Harbor Freight ($5).
Wrap the strap around the center of the overhead "sports bar" (Remember, its not a true roll-bar). That will leave the clasp dangling below the bar.
Hook the "Handle" of the leash to the clasp.
Hook the leash to the harness on the dog.
He can walk around, and lay down...but he cannot fall out.
Takes almost a minute.
As for the hair.....running doorless for a while after offloading the dog gets rid of most of the hair. Caution, though....you will have a temporary "Snow Globe" effect.
Happy Trails.
